Wrestling team opens inaugural season

The first-ever Switzerland County High School wrestling team opened its season with an invitational at Scottsburg High School.

The Pacers placed seventh overall as a team, which included teams from Scottsburg, Crawford County, New Washington, Jennings County, Eastern Pekin, Salem, Paoli, and Christian Academy.

– In the first round of the invitational, the Pacers fell to Paoli by a 78-0 score. Four of the losses were due to forfeits; eight losses came by pins; one loss came as a decision on points; and there was one double forfeit.

- In the second round, Switzerland County fell just short against Crawford County, losing by a score of 36-30.

The Pacers got a pin win by Tylor Thomas; and also picked up four wins by forfeit; lost two matches by forfeit; and there were three double forfeits.

– In the next round, the Pacers lost to New Washington by a 42-30 score.

Switzerland County had four winners by pins: Chase Richards, Tony Hernandez, Alex Galbreath, and Tylor Thomas. The team also had one win by forfeit; three losses by forfeit; and four losses by pins. There were also two double forfeits.

- Switzerland County then wrestled Jennings County, losing by a 60-6 score.

Kevin Adams picked up a victory by a pin; and the team suffered eight losses by pin. There were two losses to forfeits; and three double forfeits.

– Next came a match with Salem, and in it Switzerland County picked up its first-ever team win, 42-24.

Pin winners for the Pacers were Vince Hernandez, Tony Hernandez, Kevin Adams, and Alex Galbreath; and there were three wins by forfeit; one loss by forfeit; and three double forfeits.

– In the sixth round, Switzerland County defeated Christian Academy by a score of 42-24.

The team won six matches by forfeit; lost one match by forfeit; had three double forfeits; and Tylor Thomas won his match with a pin.

– In the final match, the Pacers fell to Scottsburg by a score of 54-30.

Tony Hernandez picked up a win by a pin; and there were four wins from forfeits and four losses from forfeits. The team also suffered five losses from pins.

– There was also a junior varsity match, in which the Pacers lost to Jennings County 18-0 and to Paoli by a score of 30-0.

Jennings County won the invitational, with Paoli finishing second.

The team is in action this Monday night with a junior varsity match at South Dearborn which will start at 5:30 p.m.
