Larry Pence has always been a pretty handy person. Larry has had a woodshed for years and has built just about everything. Larry got a job in engineering at Belterra Casino which inspired him to build a 1/32 scale model of ‘Miss Belterra’.
Anna Lockwood earned a Silver Medal at the ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Indianapolis.
Nicole Leap was crowned as the 2013 ‘Queen of Hearts’ by the Switzerland County FFA.

Switzerland County schools got some great news from the Indiana Department of Education earlier this week — students at the elementary schools and the middle school are among the top grade levels in the state after the announcement of ISTEP test results. In fact, the county wide scores of third graders taking the test — combining both Switzerland County Elementary School and Jefferson-Craig Elementary School — show that our third graders as the number one group in the entire state of Indiana.
The Switzerland County Commissioners had a rather spirited discussion with representatives of American Consulting Architects at Monday’s meeting — with the question being raised about whether or not the commissioners wanted to start over with a new architectural team. American Consulting was selected by the commissioners to begin architectural plans that will led to the construction of a new jail and possibly to the construction of an addition to the Switzerland County Courthouse.
Amanda Coy, daughter of Jerry and Sheila Coy of Madison, is student teaching in the agriculture department of Switzerland County High School this spring. She is being supervised by teacher Greg Curlin.

The possibility that construction of new school facilities will be undertaken by the Switzerland County School Corporation seems more likely after Monday night’s public hearing held by the school board. School board members indicated they hadn’t made a decision about any construction project but their comments sounded like the board is leaning toward building a middle school.
Hank McLain says there’s something special about living on Market Street in Vevay, and he doesn’t want that to change. That’s why he is an enthusiastic supporter of the Historic Review Board ordinance, which was approved by the Vevay Town Council at it meeting last Wednesday. Its purpose is to promote historic preservation in Vevay.
Along its Switzerland County shoreline the Ohio River is receding, after rising close to flood stage early this week. Joe Roberts of Vevay, lockmaster at Markland Dam, said the river crested at 6 o’clock Tuesday morning at 46.9 feet, 4.1 feet below flood stage, which is 51 feet. By 10 o’clock Wednesday morning, the river had fallen to 43.8 feet. The river’s pool stage — its normal level — is 12 feet.

Both Switzerland County elementary schools participated in the annual Indiana Mathematics League Contest earlier this month. The two “overall” winners consisted of Bobbi King from Jefferson-Craig and Jay Klein from Switzerland County Elementary.
Bruce Hutcherson of near Patriot won his ninth grand national championship during the 10th Annual Indy Super Pull recently held in Indianapolis. He took first place in the 12,200 pound Unlimited Class, the most demanding and challenging class in tractor pulling.
Terry Abbott has been appointed quality Control Manager at the Randall-Textron Plant of Vevay. He has been with Randall-Textron since 1976.

Mrs. Virginia E. Hill, 26, died Thursday night at St. Joseph Hospital in Louisville of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Vevay’s Dairy Queen restaurant has reopened, having been completely remodeled after being partially destroyed by fire in December.
Jacob Detmer, 79, of Patriot passed away Wednesday at Terrace View Nursing Home in Lawrenceburg following an extended illness.
The Bennington Methodist Church was the setting for the February 9th wedding of Miss Kathy Christman and Danny Covington. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Christman. Parents of the bridegroom are Shirley and Paul Covington.
Miss Gail Cochran became the bride of Dennis Covington January 6th in the Church of Christ, Rising Sun. Miss Cochran is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Cochran, Rising Sun. Mr. Covington is the son of Mrs. Shirley Covington, route 2, Vevay, and Paul Covington of Madison.

Walter E. “Jim” Gaudin was presented a 25-year Kiwanis Legion of Honor certificate from Kiwanis International by Samuel Robinson, president of Vevay Kiwanis Club. Gaudin, a retired hardware merchant, also received a 25-year Legion of Honor membership pin for its activity in Kiwanis-sponsored civic programs. Presentation was made at last Wednesday’s club meeting.
The nation’s walking craze continues to hold the public’s interest and imagination as another Switzerland County hike has been scheduled March 16th. The walk is scheduled for 25 miles — from Vevay to Brooksburg and back to Vevay. However, the gentlemen are excluded from this hike, with entrants being limited to the fairer sex.
Dorothy North received an honorary service pin for having completed 20 years as employee of United States Shoe Corporation as Robert Stix, director of manufacturing, made the presentation.
Reverend Fred Griffith of Vevay is probably the only person in this part of Indiana who exchanged Holiday greetings, with Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother of England!

Mr. and Mrs. James Orem have purchased stock and fixtures of the Madison grocery on lower Main Street and took possession Monday.
The local gymnasium was filled to capacity each of the four sessions of the basketball tournament played here last weekend. Total receipts for the four sessions was $2,778.70 and total attendance 6,471.
Ralph N. Tirey, who is retiring as President of Indiana State Teachers College, Terre Haute, is being honored by a special concert given by the Symphonic Band in the Auditorium of the Student Union Building March 22nd.
Joseph E. W. Greene of Newport, Ohio, the last member of the Greene family which has been identified with Ohio River packet trade, died February 25th at the home of his daughter in Reading, Massachusetts. Mr. Greene has not been an active participant in the steamboat business but operated a general store in Newport.
Miss Grace McKay, 75, a native and for most of her life a resident of Switzerland County, passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Anna Montanye on Seminary Street here, about 4 o’clock Tuesday morning following an acute illness of about six weeks.

Switzerland County officially lost its second boy in the War this week when Mrs. Naomi Gray McFarland received a telegram Sunday evening from the War Department stating that her husband, Corporal Raymond McFarland, had died of wounds received in the Southwest Pacific fighting area.
Leslie Hamilton, World War I veteran, died in Veterans Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, March 3rd following a long illness of tuberculosis.
Ruth Louise Torrance, wife of Robert N. Torrance, who has recently reported for service in the Army at Nashville, Tennessee, left Wednesday for Daytona Beach, Florida, where she will enter training in the WAAC.
Word has been received by relatives here of the death of Earl Simpson, which occurred at his home in Miami, Florida, following a stroke suffered a week ago. Mr. Simpson was born in Vevay and was 58 years of age.
Jesse Sprague, farmer of the Quercus Grove community, passed away at his home there Sunday morning, his death being due to a complication of measles and pneumonia.

All banks in the United States have been closed since Monday by reason of an order issued by President Roosevelt. Vevay banks received authority from the U.S. Treasury Department Tuesday evening to open their doors during the period of the moratorium for the purpose of making change, so will be open each morning from 9 to 10 for this purpose.
Mr. and Mrs. William G. Wiley of near Florence, who have spent their entire lives in York Township, Switzerland County, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, March 4th.
Jacob Shuey, formerly of Vevay, and for some time a resident of the K of P home at Lafayette passed away at his home there last week following a long period of ill health.
W. I. Nave, retired farmer, passed away at his home near Quercus Grove Sunday morning following an illness of several months.

A new store, “The Leader”, will be started in the Klein building in Vevay about March 17th. The owner is Max Bachrach, late of Madison.
Mrs. Orma Archer, formerly of Switzerland County, died two weeks ago at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Mary Koons at Garwood, Texas.
Mrs. Hannah Vanter, widow of Silas Vanter, and a resident for many years of Posey Township, passed away Friday morning after a week’s illness of pneumonia.
Edwin Wiseman and Zella Scott of Moorefield were married Wednesday by Reverend F. W. Schmunk.
Roy Farrel and Miss Lucy Razor of Moorefield were married Wednesday in Madison by Reverend W. C. Marshall.

Garrett Jamison, aged 75 years, died at his home in the Caledonia neighborhood Thursday, February 27th, having been suffering from a heart ailment for some time.
John Otter and wife are the proud possessors of an Ellington player piano recently purchased from the Baldwin Piano Company. Mr. Otter, who is blind, is very fond of music and will derive much pleasure from this instrument.
Mrs. June Golay, a former resident of Vevay, died at the home of a cousin in Oxford, Ohio, Thursday, February 27th, at the age of 88 years.
Dr. G. H. Langsdale of Highmore, South Carolina, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. M. W. Langsdale of Florence, was married February 19th to Miss Flora May Pate at the bride’s home in Dearborn County.
Chester Osborn and Miss Elizabeth Mathis, both of Center Ridge, were married February 26th by Reverend Hammond.
Mrs. Malinda Valentine died at her home in Mount Sterling February 25th.
Aliva Rayles and Mabel Slack of East Enterprise were married in Vevay Wednesday.
D. Kinder and Miss Mabel Smith of Allensville were married Sunday at the home of the bride’s parents.
Edward Buddenberg of Egypt Bottom and Elizabeth Detmer of Rising Sun were married Wednesday at the bride’s home.
John Richardson, formerly of Posey Township, died last week in Covington, Kentucky.

Mrs. Margaret Briggs died February 18th at her home in Pleasant. She was the wife of Richard Briggs and was 55 years of age.
Franklin Peabody, aged 65 years, died Saturday, March 4th, at his home near Fairview.
A lot of gypsies have taken possession of Dan Mix’s house at Allensville and won’t get out.

Charles Gerard returned to Vevay last week after an absence of eight years.
Roswell Hall and Martha A. Roberts were married March 2nd at the residence of the bride’s father.
Mrs. Catherine VanOsdol, wife of Theodore VanOsdol, died February 27th at her home in Pleasant Township,.
Last Saturday night a Temperance meeting was held at Mount Sterling and nearly every man in and near that village signed the pledge.
The amount of the toll collected at the gate near Vevay during February was $251.27.
George T. VanPelt and Samuel Shuff are making arrangements to build a chain factory. They will use the two story frame building on the corner of Walnut and Seminary streets. They expect to turn out 18 dozen chains a day and 100 hands will be employed.

Civil War news: A Union meeting was held at the Fairview Methodist Church last week at which the speakers were Dr. Sweezy of Bennington, Dr. Beutz of Allensville, and Thomas Works.
A Union meeting was held Saturday in Odd Fellows hall in Vevay and an overflow crowd attended. Speakers were Captain T.T. Wright of Vevay and J.Y. Allison of Madison.
John W. Dodd of Jacksonville, who enlisted in Company C, 7th Indiana Regiment, has been promoted to 2nd Lieutenant.
A New York dispatch states that a Murfreesboro letter says that General Rosecrans has issued an order prohibiting the Cincinnati Enquirer and Chicago Times from circulating in the Army of the Cumberland.
An order has been issued by General Rosecrans calling for a determined effort for the suppression of desertion. He wishes it to be distinctly understood throughout the army, that the extreme penalty of death will be enforced in case of desertion.
At a Union meeting of Craig Township held at Shaw’s Store an organization was set up with John Weaver as president, B.F. Harvey as secretary, William Anderson, John Weaver and James Alexander were chosen to draft resolutions.
At Allensville the Union meeting was held at the Presbyterian Church on Monday night. The following officer were elected: James Downey, president; Squire McHenry, vice president; Allen Wiley, secretary; James R. Fisher, treasurer. At the meeting over $30 was contributed for families of soldiers.
