Carolyn Baker

  Carolyn Marie (Brown) Baker, 89, of Mason, Ohio (formerly of Rising Sun) passed away on Monday, February 27th, 2023 at Mason Assisted Living & Memory Care.

  Carolyn was born in Ohio County on February 7th, 1934, the daughter of the late Edna (Fisher) Brown and Jessie Brown. Carolyn grew up in the Ohio County community and was a 1952 graduate of Rising Sun High School.

  Carolyn married Virgil V. Baker on February 7th, 1954. Carolyn and Virgil were married over 55 years until his passing on September 23rd, 2009.

  Carolyn and Virgil operated the B&W Market in Rising Sun for 40 years.

  She was a member of the Rising Sun Church of the Nazarene. Carolyn loved visiting with family and close friends. She also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Cincinnati Reds and Indiana Hoosiers basketball.

  Carolyn is survived by her daughter Janice Roeder (John Roeder), of Mason, Ohio; by her son Larry Baker (Jo Ann Wheat), of Cincinnati, Ohio; by her grandchildren: Amanda Maxam (Jeff Maxam), Samuel Hautman, Kimberly Hughes (Samuel Hughes), Elizabeth Baker (Michael Mitchell), Lindsay Perrmann (Jason Perrmann) and Brandon Baker (Brittany Baker); by her great-grandchildren: Trent, Eli, Adelyn, Jake, James, Lillian, Gwyneth, Margaret, Bella, Griffin, Brody and Bryson; by her sister Marjorie BonDurant, of Marysville, Ohio; by her sister-in-law, Wanda Brown, of Pendleton, Indiana; and by her several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

  Visitation was held on Monday, March 6th, at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun. Funeral services followed the time of visitation on Monday, March 6th at the funeral home with Reverend Darwin Pressler officiating. Burial was at Rising Sun New Cemetery.

Loren ‘Butch’ Konkle

  Loren “Butch” Konkle, age 78, of Vevay, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 26th, 2023, at his winter home in Homosassa, Florida.

  Butch entered this life on August 14th, 1944 in Vevay. He was the son of the late Ernest “Ernie” and Jessie Malee (Roberts) Konkle. He was raised in Vevay and was a 1962 graduate of Vevay High School.

  Butch was united in marriage on September 18th, 2005 to Jeanne Marie Judy in Vevay. Butch and Jeanne shared over 10 years of marriage together until she passed away on December 15th, 2015.

  Butch was a tobacco buyer for Phillip Morris. He was also a former owner and operator of Swiss Inn in Vevay. Butch owned and operated Route 56 Campground near Madison.

  Butch enjoyed pulling horses, watching westerns, hunting and watching IU Basketball. He also enjoyed fishing and boating. Butch always kept a meticulous lawn and home and enjoyed taking care of his campground. Butch held several benefits over the years for Veterans and for Relay for Life, as well as, multiple fire departments.

  He was a member of the Moose Lodge #765 in Madison.

  Butch is survived by his son, Robert Konkle of Vevay; by his step-son, Derek Lane Allen and his wife Cathy of Vevay; by his step-daughter, Jennifer Lynn Cutter and her husband Mike of Aurora, Indiana; by his grandchildren: Brittany Konkle, Braydan Allen, Lane Cutter, and Ava Cutter; by his great-grandchildren: Peyton, Hayley, and Holden Knox; by his brother, Jim Konkle and his wife Roberta of Vevay; and by his sisters: Nannie Jones of Moorefield and Mary Kelly of Hanover, Indiana.

  He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest “Ernie” Konkle; by his mother, Jessie Malee (Roberts) Konkle; by his wife, Jeanne Marie (Judy) Konkle; and by his sisters: Phyllis Ann Coker and Brenda Kay Hart Godsey.

  Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, March 10th, 2023, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana, 47043.

  Graveside Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, March 10th, 2023, by Pastor Patrick Lanman, at the Vevay Cemetery.

Hobert ‘Gene’ Morehead

  Hobert Eugene ‘Gene’ Morehead, 78, of Rising Sun, passed away on Saturday, March 4th, 2023.

  Gene was born on December 6h, 1944, in Moores Hill, Indiana,  the son of John H. Morehead and Mabel Abboot (Wilmer).

  Gene served in the United States Marine Corps, stationed in San Diego, California; Okinawa, Japan; Hawaii; and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

  He worked for Volvo of North America in Chicago and Atlanta until he retired and moved to Rising Sun to pursue farming. He enjoyed his oversized garden every year, riding on his tractor, fishing, hunting, going on runs with his veterinarian to local farms, and spending time with his grandchildren.

  In the past few years, he spent much of his time watching cowboys, Fox News, and football games. He was a mentor to so many over the years, always there to listen and offer advice to anyone who asked for it (or didn’t). He firmly believed in working hard to make dreams a reality, and when he decided he wanted to do something, he did it wholeheartedly.

  He is survived by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Linda Morehead; by his children: Timothy Morehead and Michelle Jones (David); by his grandchildren: Brock Jones, Chase Jones,

and Lyndzi Jones; by his brother, Dale Abbott; by his sister, Debbie Watkins; by his sisters-in-law: Brenda Cook and Barbara Albright (Tim); and by his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

  Gene was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Morehead and Mabel Abbott (Wilmer); by his brother, Charles “Pud” Morehead; by his sister, Judy Weber; by his sister-in-law, Gloria Morehead; by his brother-in-law, Bob Weber; and by his nephew, David Morehead.

  Visitation will be held on Friday, March 10th, from 4-6 p.m. at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun.

  Funeral services will be held following the time of visitation at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 10th at the funeral home.

  Memorial donations may be made to the family.

Mary Gladys Peelman

  Mary Gladys (Burnett) Peelman, age 91, of Freeburg, Illinois, formerly of Vevay, passed away at 6:20 p.m. on Monday, March 6th, 2023, at the Freeburg Care Center in Freeburg, Illinois.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Poston

  Thomas Dean “Tom” Poston, age 88, of Mason, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida.

  Tom born in Madison and was the son of the late Arthur Raymond and Elvessa Thelma (Morrison) Poston.

Lura Smith

  Lura Patterson Smith, 98, passed away on Monday, March 6th, 2023.

  Lura was born on July 22nd, 1924, the daughter of Paul and Mariam Patterson of Florence, Indiana. She graduated from Patriot High School.

  Lura married William David Smith in 1942. They briefly lived in Connersville, Indiana, and moved to Liberty, Indiana where they remained until moving to Fishers, Indiana in 2002.

  Lura was a great cook, and loved hosting family meals. She made apple pies and baked chocolate chip cookies to give to her grandsons. Her deviled eggs were always on the request list at any family gathering.

  Lura worked as a telephone switchboard operator, and for Cox’s Grocery Stores in Richmond. She was also a Real Estate Agent with Lingle Real Estate.

  She was a member of Liberty Church of Christ, and was very active in the community. She was a 4-H Leader, and a long-standing member of Apron Strings Home Economics Club, serving as County President for three terms.

  She is survived by her two daughters: Carol Whitlock Ellingson of Fishers, Indiana and Lynn Nestler of Indianapolis by her five grandsons: Scott Whitlock (Kimberly) and Shawn Whitlock (Gracie), both of Indianapolis, Steve Whitlock of Carmel, Indiana, Skipp Whitlock of Avon, Indiana, and Douglas Nestler (Jemma) of Madeira, Ohio; by her 11 great-grandchildren: Jessica, Jack, Emma, Mae, Millie, and Joe Whitlock of Indianapolis; Noah, Della and Marlee Whitlock of Carmel; and Jane and David Nestler of Madeira, Ohio; and by her great great-grandson, Elias Scott Jewett.

  Visitation will be held on Friday, March 10th, from 9-10:30 a.m. at Showalter-Blackwell Funeral Home, 312 West Union Street, Liberty, Indiana, 47353. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 10th, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Graveside service and interment will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 10th, at the Vevay Cemetery.

Faith Wood

  Faith A. Wood, 52, of Rising Sun, passed away on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, Kentucky.

  Faith was born in Fort Thomas, Kentucky on June 26th, 1970, the daughter of the late Ethleen Carol (Traylor) Wood and Donald Wood of Rising Sun. She was a graduate of Newport High School.

  Faith devoted her life to the care of others. She began helping Gary and Peggy Bross and became part of their family. Peggy battled MS for several years and Faith was her caregiver for over 27 years until Peggy’s passing in 2022. Faith also worked at Duke Energy in Ohio for over 30 years.

  Faith enjoyed the outdoors and going on camping trips. She liked playing bingo and going to the local riverboats. Faith also had a great affection and love for animals, especially her little buddies, Jake and Josie.

  Faith is survived by her father, Donald Wood, of Rising Sun; by her sister, Donna Cullum and her husband Bernard of Bethel, Ohio; by Gary Bross of Rising Sun; by her nephews: Randall Iles, Darren Iles, Steven Iles, Dylan Cullum, Tyler Cullum and Cameron Cullum; by her nieces: Donelle Cullum, Catherine Cullum and Lauren Dodd; by her great-nephews: Jordan Iles, Jacob Iles and Bently Dodd; and by her great nieces: Bella Cullum and Baleigh Cullum.

  A public visitation was held on Wednesday, March 8th at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun.

  A family graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 9th at the Rising Sun New Cemetery.
