Lady Pacers race past South Ripley 10-0
The Switzerland County Lady Pacer softball team continued its outstanding season on Monday night with a convincing, 10-0 victory over South Ripley in the opening round of Sectional play. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Switzerland County got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first. Shortstop Jessie Duvall led off the game with a single, and that was followed by an RBI single from Maddie Duvall. After Lily Sparks and Maggie Henry struck out, Allie Bruce was hit by a pitch, and then advanced to second with Maddie Duvall at third in another scoring chance, but Madesyn Byrd struck out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the third, the Lady Pacer bats began to heat up again, ad Jessie Duvall led off the inning with a triple; and again she was followed by twin sister Maddie Duvall, who also tripled to score her sister. Sparks then picked up an RBI with a single; and Henry reached on a fielder’s choice that nabbed Sparks at second. Bruce then lifted a fly to center that the Lady Raider fielder dropped for an error, but was able to throw out Henry trying to get to second after the ball dropped. Byrd picked up an RBI when her single scored Bruce; and the winning ended with Ariel Oeffinger grounding out to third — but the inning gave Switzerland County a 4-0 lead.
With Sparks twirling an outstanding game from the mound, Switzerland County sealed the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Maddie Duvall led off the inning with a single and Sparks followed that with a double. Henry then doubled; and after Bruce flew out to center, a single by Byrd was followed by Oeffinger being hit by a pitch; and then Nora Hankins connected for a single.
After Lexi Lay struck out; Jessie Duvall blasted a two out double that provided the lead of at least 10 runs after five innings, and the game was called.
