Lady Pacers fall in Sectional final, 6-0 to South Ripley
An outstanding season for the Switzerland County Lady Pacer softball team came to a sudden end on Thursday night in the championship game of the Class 2A Sectional #45 — which was being played here on the Switzerland County field.
Switzerland County advanced to the Sectional championship game by defeating North Decatur in the semifinals on Tuesday, May 25th, by a score of 6-1.
The Lady Pacers fell behind early as North Decatur scored a run in the first inning; but tied the game in the third.
In that third inning, Maddie Duvall led off with a double, and was then driven in on an RBI by Madesyn Byrd.
The big inning came in the fourth, McKaila Peelman led off with a walk and Keirstan Oeffinger followed that with a one out single. Jessie Duvall then singled, and Maddie Duvall’s double resulted in two RBI. Lily Sparks then knocked in a run; and Nora Hankins picked up an RBI with a sacrifice.
Sparks was in full control on the mound after the first batter; striking out seven.
Tuesday night’s win pushed Switzerland County into the championship game on Thursday night against conference rival South Ripley. The Lady Pacers and the Lady Raiders split a pair of game in the regular season, so the Sectional championship would prove to be the series deciding game for the year.
Unfortunately for Switzerland County, South Ripley was better on Thursday night, winning the championship with a 6-0 decision.
South Ripley scored one run in the first inning, two more in the fourth; and then scored three runs — all unearned — in the sixth to claim the title.
The Lady Pacers struggled at the plate to generate any offense in the contest, with Jessie Duvall opening the first inning with a double being the game highlight.
Maddie Duvall had a single in the sixth inning; and Nora Hankins added a double in the seventh, but none of those three hits resulted in runs.
Switzerland County suffered 16 strikeouts in the game.
Lily Sparks had eight strikeouts for the Lady Pacers in the game.
