The Switzerland County Lady Pacers celebrated Thanksgiving early last Wednesday with a huge 50-45 victory over North Decatur.
The big win, the Lady Pacers fifth of the season against just one loss, was fueled by outstanding games from seniors Jessie and Maddie Duvall.
The game got off to a slow start offensively for Switzerland County, as North Decatur moved out to a 14-8 lead at the first break.
Jessie Duvall, Courtney Higgins, and Macy Collier each had first period baskets, while Maddie Duvall converted two freethrows.
North Decatur’s first quarter was led by Madi Allen, who accounted for nine points in the stanza.
The Lady Chargers widened their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the homestanding Lady Pacers by a 14-13 count to take a 28-21 lead into the halftime break.
In that second quarter, Jessie Duvall led the way with 10 points on three field goals, a three-pointer, and a freethrow. Maddie Duvall made another freethrow in the period; and Halle Archer hit a field goal.
North Decatur got a pair of three-pointers from Kesley Haley and two field goals from Ella Kunz to spark its second quarter offense.
Coming out of the halftime break saw Switzerland County take control of the game, outscoring North Decatur by a 14-4 tally to grab a 35-32 lead with eight minutes to play.
In that big third, Higgins and Maddie Duvall came up huge with five points each. Higgins had a three-pointer and a field goal; while Maddie Duvall had a three-pointer and a pair of freethrows.
Jessie Duvall and Hannah Hayes each had buckets to provide the other points as each added a field goal.
Up by three in the final stanza, the game was back and forth, but Switzerland County had 15 points in the fourth while the Lady Pacer defense held North Decatur to 13 points.
Much of the Lady Pacer scoring came at the freethrow line, as Switzerland County had 11 attempts —more than half of their entire game total — in the final period. The Lady Pacers came through by making 10 of those attempts, sealing a key victory moving into the main portion of the schedule.
Maddie Duvall had nine points in the quarter, connecting on a field goal, four freethrows and a three-pointer; while Jessie Duvall was a perfect 4-for-4 at the line; Higgins was a perfect 2-for-2 at stripe.
North Decatur also spend a majority of the quarter at the freethrow line, but managed to make just six out of 10 attempts.
For the game, Jessie Duvall led the Lady Pacers with 18 points on five field goals, a three-pointer, and a perfect 5-for-5 from the line; while Maddie Duvall was also in double figures, ending with 17 points on a field goal; a pair of three-pointers, and an impressive 9-for-10 from the freethrow line.
Higgins was just outside of double figures, finishing with nine points on two field goals, a three-pointer; and she was 2-for-3 from the line; while Collier, Archer, and Hayes each added two points on field goals.
The Lady Chargers were led by Haley with 16 points and Allen with 15 points.
In Wednesday’s junior varsity game, Switzerland County remained undefeated with a 41-32 win over North Decatur.
The Lady Pacers were led in the game by Bri Stow, who finished with nine points; while Terra Oeffinger and Gracie White each added eight points.
Carlee Boggs and Isabella Breeck each had four points in the contest; while Molly Wrightsman, Claire Rogers, Dakota Richards, and Ashlyn Covington each contributed two points.
