Wired: thieves hit substations

For the second time in two weeks, thieves have broken into electrical substations in Switzerland County with the intention of stealing copper wire.

On Monday, Switzerland County deputy Walter Vinson was called to the Fairview substation on Bennington Pike after the sheriff’s office received a call from Hoosier Energy stating that they had observed one and possibly two people inside the substation fencing.

When Deputy Vinson got to the scene, he found that the padlocks to the facility had been cut off. The suspects were at the scene when the deputy arrived, but when they saw the police approaching, they abandoned their vehicle and fled the scene.

The vehicle was impounded, and during a search of the vehicle, the trunk was found to be loaded with copper wire that was being stolen.

Last week, Southeastern Indiana REMC reported that thieves broke into the substation on East Little Doe Run Road and stole copper wire and other materials.

The utility company is now offering a $2,500 reward to anyone who can supply information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for that theft.

Anyone with information should contact the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department at 427-3636; or Brady Mann at Hoosier Energy, 1-800-456-1096.
