The Switzerland County School Board will hold a special meeting on Monday, July 9th, and at that meeting the board is expected to conduct two items of business – accept the resignation of Wilma Swango from the school board; and then officially hire her as the new school corporation treasurer.

Actually, she will be rehired – as she returns to a post that she held from 1989 until 2002.

“I feel like it’s a really good opportunity,” Wilma Swango said earlier this week after officially accepting the offer. “I am excited to be returning as the corporation treasurer.”

Wilma Swango is a native of Switzerland County, and first came to the school corporation as the secretary to the superintendent, a position she held from 1983-1988.

She served as the corporation’s grant writer for the 1988-1989 school year; and then was named corporation treasurer in 1989.

Since leaving the administrative offices in 2002, Wilma Swango has continued to be active with the schools.

In 2004 she was elected as the representative from the town of Vevay to the school board – a position that she will reluctantly have to give up prior to being hired as treasurer. State law says that a person cannot hold a job with a school corporation while serving on a school board.

Once she resigns, superintendent Tracy Caddell said that the remainder of the board will take applications for the vacant board seat from those interested citizens who live in the town.

The board will then interview prospective applicants and then appoint a person to fill the vacancy until the seat comes up for election in November of 2008.
