Whitley Schirmer’s huge game offensively led the Switzerland County Lady Pacers to a big 51-50 victory over Christian Academy of Indiana on Saturday night.
The senior finished with a team-high 24 points, as she was locked into a shootout with CAI’s Alli Stumler, who would finish the game with 32 points.
Switzerland County took an early lead after the first quarter, as freshman Aleiah Thomas was hot early, accounting for eight points, including a three-pointer and a freethrow. Schirmer also started strong with four points; and after the first period, the Lady Pacers led by a score of 12-9.
The Lady Warriors rebounded in the second quarter, and led by Stumler, who had 12 points in the period, CAI outscored Switzerland County 18-9 to take a 27-21 lead into the halftime break.
Switzerland County got four points from Rylee Hankins in the period, while Mallory Phagan added three points and Thomas had the other two.
As hot as CAI was in the second quarter, the Lady Pacer offense was just as heated coming out of the halftime break, as Switzerland County outscored their guests by a 17-11 mark over the eight minute span to tie the game at 38-38 after three.
Schirmer led the charge, accounting for 11 points in the third; while Phagan, Thomas, and McKenli Scudder each had baskets.
Stumler kept rolling for CAI, scoring another nine points in the quarter.
Knotted at 38-38 with a period to play, the final stanza was a back-and-forth affair, with the Lady Pacers finally pulling out the quarter by a 13-12 count to earn the victory by a final score of 51-50.
Schirmer again was key for Switzerland County, as the senior knocked down seven freethrows in the fourth on her way to nine points overall. Phagan chipped in two more buckets in the quarter, and that was enough for Coach Ashley Kitts’ squad to get its third win of the young season.
The offense was also just enough to out pace Stumler, who also had nine points in the closing quarter.
Along with her 24 points, Schirmer also had three assists, two rebounds, and two steals.
Thomas also finished in double figures with 12 points; and she also had seven rebounds and two steals. Phagan had nine points and six rebounds; Hankins added four points and eight rebounds; and Scudder contributed two points and four boards.
Along with Stumler’s 32 points; CAI got 11 points from Hailey Jones.
Switzerland County returns to the court this Saturday, December 10th, with a home game with Shawe Memorial; and a big test looms on the horizon, as South Ripley comes to town this Tuesday, December 13th.
