Switzerland County Lady Pacer sophomore Whitley Schirmer has already established herself as of the best distance runners in this area of the state over her first two years; and she added to her growing legend last Wednesday night as she became the Sectional Champion in the 3,200-meter run.
The Sectional was held at Jeffersonville High School, and featured many of the bigger schools in this portion of the state.
Whitley Schirmer finished in a time of 12:14.11 to easily outdistance second place runner Olivia Graebe of New Washington (12:21.62) and a pair of Silver Creek runners: Mackenzie Crouch (12:23.42) and Miranda Coats (12:35.98).
Not to be outdone, Schirmer also qualified for the Regional by finishing second overall in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 5:35.54; just behind winner Jessica Backherms of Silver Creek (5:19.80).
Overall as a team, the Lady Pacers finished fifth overall in the 12-team field. Switzerland County scored 71 points, the most points scored by a girls track team in school history.
Jeffersonville won the Sectional with a total of 149 points; followed by Silver Creek (91 1/2); Madison (91); and Henryville (74). Following Switzerland County: Southwestern was sixth (33); Charlestown (26); Rock Creek Academy (24); Scottsburg (22); New Washington (18); Austin (12 1/2); and Madison Shawe (5).
The Lady Pacers had other runners advance to the Regional with strong Sectional efforts.
Eve Galbreath will move on the Sectional in the 100-meter hurdles; as will Paige Sawyer. Galbreath finished second in the hurdles with a time of :17.11; while Sawyer was third in a time of :17.58.
Megan Dasis was second in the long jump with a distance of 16’2 3/4″ and will advance to the Regional.
Also moving on is the 400-meter relay team of Galbreath, Sawyer, Dasis, and Moriah Northcutt, who finished third in a time of :54.11.
Other Switzerland County team members participating in the Jeffersonville Sectional included:
– Galbreath was fourth in the shot put; the 3,200-meter relay team of Mackenzie Covington, Kim Cutter, Riley King, Jade Mullins, Cameron Ray, and Whitley Schirmer was fifth, as was the 1,600-meter relay team of Covington, Mullins, Dasis, Katerina Svobodova, and Northcutt. Northcutt was sixth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles;
– Natalie Newman was seventh in the discus and fifth in the shot put; King was seventh in the 800-meters; Emma Giglio was eighth in the high jump; Galbreath was 10th in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles; Audrey Kinne was 11th in the long jump; Cutter was 12th in the 400-meter dash and 15th in the 800-meter run; Jody Breeck was 13th in the discus; and Erin Green was 17th in the 1,600-meter run.
