Vevay Main Street, Inc. was the big winner at the recent Indiana Main Street Conference, as the local organization won three of the eight awards presented during the event. The awards were presented as part of the annual Cornelius O’Brien Historic Preservation and Indiana Main Street Conference.
Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman made the presentations, honoring The Mercantile of Switzerland County with the 2007 Indiana Main Street “Best Window Displays and Merchandising” award.
“Congratulations to The Mercantile of Switzerland County for its efforts, which have helped promote economic activity in its community,” said Lieutenant Governor Skillman. “Community pride is evident in this award. I am pleased to hear that our Indiana communities are working diligently to ensure that their downtown revitalization efforts are effective.
“Vicki Griffin, assistant manager, and her associates at The Mercantile of Switzerland County, are being honored with the ‘Best Window Displays and Merchandising’ award. They are consistently creating displays that engage and inspire.”
The Mercantile of Switzerland County is known for its ability to blend art with chocolates, crochet with tomatoes, and sewing with woodworking in a variety of displays that create an inviting and creative atmosphere for shoppers.

Lieutenant Governor Skillman also honored Ronald Hocker with the 2007 Indiana Main Street “Board Member of the Year” award during the conference.
“Congratulations to Ronald Hocker for his efforts, which have helped promote economic activity in his community,” said Lieutenant Governor Skillman. “Community pride is evident in this award. I am pleased to hear that our Indiana communities are working diligently to ensure that their downtown revitalization efforts are effective.
“Ronald Hocker is an instrumental part of Vevay Main Street, Inc. As an attorney, he lends his services for all legal aspects of the organization and he leads by example by spending capital to revitalize building facades and signage. He continues to be an asset to the Vevay community and the Main Street program.”

The third award earned by Vevay Main Street was presented by the Lieutenant Governor to David Attaway for the “Historic Rehabilitation Project” award.
“Congratulations to David Attaway for his efforts, which have helped promote economic activity in his community,” said Lieutenant Governor Skillman. “There was an outpouring of support to honor David Attaway from the community and the Vevay Main Street board members and volunteers. David continues to work tirelessly to keep Vevay Main Street, Inc.’s vision moving forward. His hard work and dedication to Vevay and Switzerland County proves he is deserving of this award.”
Indiana Main Street, a division of the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, was established to provide economic revitalization and professional assistance to participating communities. Indiana Main Street encourages the revitalization and restoration of downtown areas in Indiana cities and towns.
