The deadline has passed for those residents wishing to sign up to run for positions in the towns of Patriot and Vevay — and with more than the minimum candidates having filed, both political parties will be holding town conventions to decide the November candidates.
Instead of primary elections, on years when town elections are held, if there are more than three candidates from a political party who have filed for town council spots; or more than one candidate from a party who files to run for clerk-treasurer of the town, then each party must hold a town convention, where voters of each party meet, hear information about the candidates, and then vote for each slate.
• For the Republicans: the town convention in the Town of Vevay will be held this Tuesday, August 13th in the Switzerland County Courthouse. The convention will begin at 6 p.m., and will narrow the Republican slate for the Vevay Town Council to three candidates, as four individuals have filed for the three offices. There will not be a town convention for the Republicans in the Town of Patriot.
• For the Democrats: the town convention for Patriot will be held at Patriot Town Hall on Thursday, August 15th. That meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m., and will be held solely to nominate a candidate for Clerk-Treasurer. The Democrats will then hold a town convention in the Town of Vevay on Tuesday, August 20th, in the Switzerland County Courthouse. That convention will begin at 6:30 p.m., and will be to narrow the slate from four candidates to three nominees for the November election.
This year’s general election will be held on Tuesday, November 5th.
TOWN OF PATRIOT
Republicans: There are two Republicans running for positions on the three-member Patriot Town Council: Kathryn ‘Nicole’ Renyer and Tony L. Rider.
There is no Republican candidate for Clerk-Treasurer in the Town of Patriot.
Democrats: There are two candidates running for the Clerk-Treasurer position in the Town of Patriot: Linda Fisk and Beverly J. Mathews. That race will be determined in the Democratic town convention.
There are three Democrats running for the Town Council positions: Dwight W. Murdock; Elizabeth G. Thomas, and Theresa (Mayfield) Winter. Because each party is allowed to have three candidates on the ballot, there is no need to consider these three candidates as part of the convention.
TOWN OF VEVAY
Republicans: There are four candidates for the three slots on the ballot for the November election from the Republican party: Mark L. Graham, Dawn M. Naylor. Phillip “Chris” Riley, and Jason “JJ” Sullivan. That field will be narrowed to three at the town convention.
There is one candidate from the Republican party for the position of Clerk-Treasurer of the Town of Vevay, Brandi (Scudder) Bear. She will be on the November ballot.
Democrats: Like the Republicans, there are four candidates vying for the three slots on the Democratic ticket for the Vevay Town Council in the November election. Those four are: James “Jamie” Hayes, Kevin L. Hayes, Keith A. Smith, and Andy D. Truitt. That field will be narrowed to three at the upcoming town convention.
There is one candidate from the Democratic party for the position of Clerk-Treasurer of the Town of Vevay, Natalie (Graham) Dickerson. She will be on the November ballot.
