Tourism getting active for 2016


Kendal Miller, Executive Director of the Ohio County Tourism Convention Tourism and Visitors Commission, gave her report to city council on Thursday, April 7th.

Her report included:

*Sherry Timms has re-retired from the organization as of March 31. Kendal Miller is now serving in the director’s position and will be working Mon.-Wed. from 10a.m-.4:30p.m. Kendal is a ten-year resident of Ohio County, living on a farm purchased by her husband over 25 years ago. *Tourism has become a member of the Indiana Tourism Association (ITA.) The organization serves as a “proactive and influential group” dedicated to the profession of destination marketing and leadership within the state of Indiana. ITA advocates for tourism investment and promotion as economic development in the state. Programs are offered to tourism bureau operations that focus on best practices, professional development, and government and community relations.

*Tourism will be participating in the Media Marketplace at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds on April 12. The marketplace is sponsored by the Indiana Office of Tourism Development and brings travel writers, bloggers, television producers and others together with CVBs across the state. The purpose of the event is to give CVBs the pitch story ideas in hopes of generating press for businesses, individuals, historical sites, and events in their county.

*Staff and board members will be attending the Hoosier Hospitality Conference at Belterra on April 19 & 20. The conference brings industry professionals from across the state together to network and participate in seminars on topics of interest to tourism, lodging and restaurant outlets. Director Kendal Miller, along with board members Robbie King, president; Dean Tuggle, vice president; Christina Roberts, treasurer; and Sarah Davies will attend.

* Tourism staff, board, and volunteers have been working on the upcoming Rising Sun Regatta. This year’s event will include kids’ activities, arts & crafts vendors and live music on Saturday night. All equipment has been ordered for the August 13 & 14 event. Arts & crafts vendors and event sponsors are still being encouraged.

*The tourism staff has been working with the Ohio County Historical Museum on 2016 Quiltfest and Rising Sun Main Street on an upcoming youth art event at the Pendleton Art Center. They will also be holding their annual postcard contest later in September. Tourism has also been keeping touch with Rising Star Casino as they will be holding their Christmas Casino again this year. The event is tentatively scheduled to open on Nov. 3.

The Visitors Center will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 11a.m.-4p.m. and will adjust their hours as necessary during community events.
