Collecting memorabilia

Dear Editor:

As work has progressed on the Grisard Building (Unwiller) on the corner of Ferry and Main streets, many people have poked their head in saying how pleased they are that something is being done with the great old structure. In addition, many are taking time to share stories from either their childhood or one of their relative’s tales about the building’s past.

We would like to collect all of these tales. Anyone that has information or a memory about this great old building, please write them down and drop them off either at the newspaper office or the Visitors Center .Any old photos that we could borrow and scan would also be greatly appreciated. I know we all look forward to another part of our community coming back to life.

We would like to recognize the local groups, the Town of Vevay, Switzerland County, Vevay-Switzerland County Foundation, the Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Switzerland County Economic Development and Tourism, who working together have helped make this renovation possible. A major matching grant from the State of Indiana through the RECAP program has helped the facade/stabilization phase.

During the next few months the possibilities for new uses are being explored. One of these potential uses is for a Wine Museum to celebrate our area’s critical history in America’s Wine Industry. Over 200 years ago John James Dufour helped to settle the area and start America’s First Successful Commercial Winery. This claim to fame is deeply rooted in our community and provides us national recognition.

Need old photos

Dear Editor:

Since the remodeling of the old part of the Courthouse in 2005, we have displayed art work by local artists, but we are now looking for old photos to copy that would be of interest to the citizens of the county.

It has been suggested that we have a theme for each two months or so of display, so this first display is to be of the old, one-room schoolhouses. Many people have the school pictures which reveal the class and a part of the building, but we are particularly interested in pictures of the schoolhouses themselves.

We have a copy system in the Recorder’s office specifically suited to copying old documents, so we would copy the photos and give them immediately back to their owners.

Are there people out there willing to share the old school photos or other historically significant pictures for copying? Just stop in the Courthouse at the Recorder’s office or the Auditor’s office, and w e will gladly copy the photos. Thanks, everyone, for going through your old photos.

Sponsors needed

To the Editor:

My name is Amanda Watson. I am a 2005 graduate of Switzerland County High School in Vevay, Indiana, as well as a 2005 Lilly Scholar. I am currently a junior at the University of Evansville where I have received the honor of being on the Dean’s List for five semesters. I am also on track to graduate with the highest honors. I am majoring in music education, with hopes of attending graduate school for clarinet performance. I would also like to teach middle school instrumental music in the future.

I am writing this letter to you about an opportunity that I have been offered for this summer. I have been accepted to the Wintergreen Summer Music Academy for Performing Arts in Wintergreen, Virginia. This is a program available to undergraduate and graduate students. Students who attend the program will have opportunities to perform in wind ensembles, the Academy orchestra, chamber ensembles, receive weekly private lessons on their instrument, and attend master classes, clinics, and workshops. It is an honor and privilege to be accepted to the Academy since only 40 students are accepted.

Currently, I am in need of financial sponsors in order to attend this summer program. The total cost to attend the Academy is $2,750. This includes tuition and room and board. I have raised $500 on my own to cover some of the expenses, but still need to raise $2,250. This is a wonderful opportunity and privilege that is worth every penny.

If you have any questions or would like to sponsor me, you can contact me at 812-599-1599 or aw148@evansville.edu. If you do wish to sponsor me, donations can be sent to my home address at 221 Highway 56, Vevay, Indiana 47043. If I do not raise enough money to attend the Academy, anything that you send will be returned. Thank you.

EMS support

To the Editor:

We at Switzerland County EMS would like to acknowledge York Township Trustee Kip Hatton and his advisory board, Shannon Jackson, Mike Beatty and Larry Turner for their support of our new Paramedic Crew at the East Enterprise Firehouse.

We currently staff the firehouse with an Advanced Life Support Crew on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. East Enterprise Fire Department was gracious enough to turn its training room into living quarters for our crews. We have been doing this for one month and have made over 50 runs from the East Enterprise Station. Our average run times have dropped from 12 1/2 minutes to 8 minutes when the East Enterprise Station is operating.

This station puts us closer to about 4,000 people and the Switzerland County Elementary School. We are trying to generate enough funding to operate the East Enterprise Station seven days a week 24 hours per day. Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible donation to support this project may contact Randy See at 812-427-3750 or Fire Chief Jeff Darling at 812-534-2752.
