Three in double figures lead Pacers to pre-Christmas win over Oldenburg Academy

The Switzerland County Pacer varsity basketball team succeeded in bringing home a 52-30 win when they visited Oldenburg Academy last Wednesday evening.

The game started with Oldenburg scoring first, but Switzerland County didn’t allow them to score again until half way into the quarter. Pacers B.J. Shelton and Chancey May started the scoring for Switzerland County which gave the Pacers the lead 7-2. With the clock reading 3:13 left in the quarter the Oldenburg team scored a two point shot and a three-point shot tying up the score 7-7.

An Oldenburg player then tried to score and was fouled, hitting one of two freethrows to give them the lead, 8-7. Josh Snow then finished off the quarter with a shot giving the Pacers the lead 9-8.

Oldenburg started the second quarter off scoring first once again. Ben Hickman was then sent to the foul line twice and added three points to the scoreboard.

The Twisters returned with a shot and another point at the foul line tying the game at 13-13.

Mat Deaton then hit two baskets, as did the Oldenburg Twisters, keeping the score tied at 17-17.

Mat Deaton and Ben Hickman each scored with less than two minutes left in the quarter to give the Switzerland County Pacers the lead 21-17.

Mat Deaton finished the half in the last seconds with a basket, giving the Pacers an even bigger lead 23-17.

The second half was started off by Zach Getz and B.J. Shelton scoring for the Pacers giving them a bigger lead, 28-17.

With 4:04 left in the third quarter the Twisters finally connected with a shot.

Josh Snow was fouled and hit one of two of his shots at the line to make the score 29-19. Twister Jason Eckstein was then fouled and went to the line hitting three for three; and that was followed by Brian Stenger hitting a shot and getting closer to the Switzerland County Pacer lead cutting it down to 29-24.

Josh Snow was then sent to the foul line again connecting both of his foul shots and Mat Deaton ended the third quarter hitting two shots, finishing the period with Switzerland County out in front by a score of 35-24.

Ben Hickman started the fourth quarter by hitting the first basket for the Pacers.

The Oldenburg Twisters then added five points in foul shots in the first four minutes of quarter — but that would be it for them in terms of scoring for the rest of the game.

Ben Hickman and B.J. Shelton scored again for the Pacers with the quarter half over with a score that now stood at 41-30. Pacer Zach Getz hit a shot and went to the foul line adding a total of three more points to the score, 44-30.

Josh Snow then added two from the foul line and B.J. Shelton hit a shot giving the Pacers a bigger lead at 48-30.

Cliff Meyer and T.J. Sefton finished off the scoring for the Pacers each taking a turn at the foul line and being successful each two for two ending the game, 52-30.

Leading the Pacers in scoring was Mat Deaton with 12 points, while B.J. Shelton contributed 11 and Ben Hickman added 10 points. Josh Snow had seven; Zach Getz added five; and Chancey May chipped in three. Cliff Meyer and T.J. Sefton each added two points each.

The junior varsity team defeated Oldenburg by a score of 48-20. Scoring for the jayvee team was Kyle Green with eight points; Aaron Moore had seven; and Devon Armstrong added six points. Daniel Welch had five points; and Brandon Otter, Bryan Levell, and Jordan Pavy each had four points. Matt Johnson and Jim Abbott each had three points; and Ryan Peters and Cliff Meyer each chipped in two points each.
