Third quarter key in pair of losses

The Rising Sun Lady Shiners fell to 0-5 on the season after a pair of road losses at Switzerland County and Waldron.

   The Shiners and Pacers saw four ties and three lead changes in the opening half and SC’s Aleiah Thomas sat the final 3:08 which saw Rising Sun leading by two at the half (16-14) at Switzerland County on Friday, 

    Rising Sun was outscored 20-2 in the third quarter ( a lone basket by sophomore Maddi Wilson) to trail 34-18 after three quarters. They battled back to within eight (35-27) on a three point play by Danyka Groover with four minutes remaining before losing 43-33 in the Ruler of the River trophy game.

    Danyka Groover led the Shiners with 13 points. Wilson added seven with Sydney Pitts and Sydney Bostic scoring four each, Kinsey price three and Lindsay Montgomery two. Montgomery had 12 rebounds with Groover and Wilson adding eight each.

   The Shiners were11-for-40 from the field and 9-for-23 at the line.

   Thomas led all scorers with 18 points. Jessie Duvall drove to the basket for 12 points. Rylee Hankins added six, Lexi Lay four and Jaden Harrell three.

    It was the first game between the Ohio River Valley Conference rivals but did not count in the conference standings.

     Coach Abby Friend found her Lady Shiners in a similar game at the half on Saturday at Waldron.

     The host Mohawks jumped out to 14-2 first quarter lead with seven points by Morgan Wood.

    Kinsey Price gave the Shiners a spark off the bench with a basket and picked up a charge. Wilson added a 3-pointer and the Shiners trailed 18-9 after one quarter. They closed the gap to 28-22 at the half but not before Montgomery picked up her third foul.

   The Shiners continued to be able to get to the free throw line making 7-for-10 in the opening half and 16-for-23 for the game.

    Waldron’s Hannah Sullivan scored seven of her game high 19 points to open the second half while Rising Sun had turnovers on each of its first four possessions (25 overall) breaking the game open.

    Montgomery, the ORVC’s leading rebounder coming into the week (10.3 rpg),  picked up her fourth foul midway through the quarter and Waldron took a 22-6 scoring advantage to lead 50-28 headed into the final eight minutes.

    Montgomery and Danyka Groover shared team high scoring honors with 13 including 9-for-12 at the line by Groover and 3-for-4 by Montgomery. Wilson added six points along with four by Price and three by Bostic. 

   Rising Sun was 11-for-35 from the field while Waldron was 20-for-489 from two point range and 3-for-10 behind the arc but just 9-for-20 at the line.

    Victoria Shaw finished with 15 points and 10 rebonds while Wood added nine.

    Waldron had a 34-22 edge rebounding. Bostic led the Shiners with seven boards with Groover adding five, Wilson four and Montgomery three.

     Rising Sun breaks for the holiday and returns home to host Seton Catholic in a varsity only contest at noon on Saturday. It will be the first of four home games in the next six outings. They visit South Dearborn on Tuesday before returning to ORVC host South Ripley on Friday, Nov. 30th in the first of two contests this season..
