The Ridge Winery, owned by Tom and Jane Demaree on Parks Ridge, is continuing the great tradition of wine making here in Switzerland County.
That tradition continued earlier this summer when the winery earned three medals at the prestigious Indy International Wine Competition. The competition was held in June at Purdue University.
Because the competition was moved up earlier in the year than in the past, The Ridge Winery only had a few wines ready to be judged, so out of 18 wines that were bottled and ready, the Demarees opted to send three selections: their Country Wine; Swiss Heritage Red; and its Rosa’.
All three wines earned medals in the competition:
• The Country White, which is a dry white wine, earned Best of Class in the Seyval Blanc class; and earned a Double Gold Medal. This is the first time that The Ridge Winery has earned Best of Class distinction at the competition.
• Swiss Heritage Red, which is a sweet four grape wine blend, earned a Bronze Medal.
• Rosa’, which is a sweet Catawba grape wine, also earned a bronze medal.
In the past three years of the competition, The Ridge Winery has earned one Double Gold; one Best of Class; two Silver medals; and three Bronze medals.
The Indy International Wine Competition is the largest scientifically organized and independent wine competition in the United States.
Now in its 27th year, this year the competition saw nearly 2,000 entries from around the world, which were evaluated by a panel of judges. Wine writers and winemakers, winegrowers and enologists, chefs and sommeliers, wine distributors, retailers and consumers meet every year at Purdue University for the competition.

As the popularity of The Ridge Winery continues to grow around the area and state, the Demarees were recently informed of another honor.
Urick Concessions will once again be running the Grand Hall at this year’s Indiana State Fair, where Indiana beers, wines and spirits are featured. Along with other Indiana Wines, Urick Concessions will feature two of The Ridge Winery’s offerings during the State Fair — ‘BlackJack’ and Barrel Aged Blackberry Wine.
The 2018 Indiana State Fair will run from August 3rd-19th.
