
The 2018 Switzerland County 4-H Queen will be crowned this Monday night, July 2nd. The pageant will take place at 7 p.m. and will be held in the cafeteria of Switzerland County High School. The pageant is free and open to the public, and this year there are six contestants vying for the honor. The 2017 Queen, Summer Dickerson, will crown her successor.
This year’s 4-H Fair Queen will not only represent the county at the Switzerland County 4-H Fair, which will be held July 7th-14th, but will then move on to the Indiana State Fair in August, with a chance to be crowned as the 2019 Indiana State Fair Queen.
Here’s a look at this year’s Fair Queen contestants:
• ALEXANDRIA NICOLE EDWARDS is the daughter of Michael and Marla Edwards of East Enterprise. She is 17 years old and will be a Junior this fall at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in the contest by RS Homes.
She is active in Business Professionals of America in high school where she has served as Student Advisor and was President for the 2017-2018 school year. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; FFA; Student Council and is on the All A Honor Roll. She is a member of the Center Square Champs 4-H Club and attends Olive Branch Baptist Church where she is a member of the youth group. She has volunteered her time at the Food Pantry; Swiss Wine Festival; Lions Club Golf Scramble and the Swiss Villa Living Center.
Her career ambition is to attend college and obtain a bachelor of science degree in nursing.
• LISA CUNNINGHAM is the daughter of Johnny and Becky Cunningham of Rising Sun. She is 18 years old and will be a Senior this fall at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in the contest by Just Kut-N-Up by Lacie Smith.
Lisa has been an active member in 4-H for the past five years. She participates in wearable art and entomology. She has been awarded Grand Champion in wearable art for the past four years for her paper and duct tape dresses. She has also been a member of the state entomology judging team for the past four years and winning first place each year. She has received either second or third place individually at the state level each year as well in entomology.
Lisa enjoys competitive tumbling, swimming and art projects. Lisa works for Shell in Vevay where she holds the position as gas station attendant.
Lisa plans on being an entomologist after high school.
• ALEXANDRA HALSTENBERG is the daughter of Tammy Halstenberg of Vevay. She is 18 years old and is a recent graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School. She is being sponsored in the contest by Center Square 4-H Champs.
She is active in Earth Club; Art Club; National Honor Society; Academic teams; FFA and a 10 year member of 4-H. She has received the Distinguished Honor Roll Award in high school. She was also captain of the English Academic Team and received the Presidents Education Award for outstanding academic excellence.
Alexandra enjoys horseback riding, intramural volleyball, playing the clarinet and painting.
Alexandra plans on being a midwife nurse.
• MACI HANKINS is the daughter of John and Jenny Hankins of Bennington. She is 18 years old and recently graduated from Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in the contest by Switzerland Sidewinders 4-H Club.
Maci is employed with Swiss Villa Living Center in Vevay as a Dietary Aide.
She is an active member in 4-H and has served at club Secretary and President. She is a member of the FFA and has held the offices of Historian, Community Chairman and Student Advisory. She is a member of the A/B Honor Roll and participated in the 10th grade Leadership Program were she received the Agriculture Science Award.
Maci enjoys volunteering and photography.
Maci plans on furthering her education to obtain a degree in elementary education.
• ALLEE HOWLETT is the daughter of Aimee Ballard of Rising Sun. She is 17 years old and will a senior this fall at Rising Sun High School. She is being sponsored in the contest by Vevay Media Group.
She was the first runner up in the 2016 Swiss Wine Festival Teen Princess contest, and is her 4-H club’s, the Shawnee Warriors, President and Counselor.
Allee is a member of the Olive Branch Youth Group. In high school she participates in FCA, volleyball, soccer and track. She enjoys volunteering at her local senior citizen snack and meal site, the outdoors, hunting, fishing, kayaking and taking care of animals.
After graduation Allee plans on obtaining a degree in nursing specializing in Diabetes Care.
• CALLEIGH POWELL is the daughter of Larry and Dawn Powell of near Allensville. She is 17 years old and will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in the contest by Edelweiss Floral.
Calleigh is a member of BPA, FFA, National Honor Society, Pep Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council. She has received many awards while participating in BPA at the state and district level. This year ranking in the top 10 in Prepared Speech and Interview Skills and has held the role as District President this past year.
She has volunteered for her local food pantry, Olive Branch Church, and has offered tutoring to younger student in her school district. In high school Calleigh participates in soccer, basketball and track where she has received several awards for her athletic accomplishments.
After graduation Calleigh plans on attending Western Kentucky University to study broadcasting and journalism.
