Teen Princess Pageant is tonight to open the 2016 Swiss Wine Festival

Capping off the opening night of the 45th Swiss Wine Festival tonight (Thursday) will be the crowning of the Edelweiss Teen Princess. The pageant will begin at approximately 8:10 p.m., and will be held on the Main Stage in the Paul Ogle Riverfront Park.

This year there are 12 contestants in the pageant, and the winner and her court will help preside over all of the remaining festivities at the festival.

The contestants include:

– LEAH MARIE ANDERS is the daughter of Clinton and Amy Anders, and she is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in the pageant by Wagging Tails Dog Grooming.

Leah is a member of the student council, National Junior Honor Society; and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and she is a seven year member of the 4-H program. She is on the cross country and track teams, where she earned the Newcomer Award in track her freshman year.

After high school she plans on attending a college or university in Indiana and pursuing a career as a genetics counselor.

-HAVEN ALEXA BURROW is in the 10th grade at Connections Academy, and she is being sponsored in the pageant by Ricketts Jewelry. She is the daughter of Desiree and Shannon Burrow.

Haven is active in the 4-H program, where she is a part of the Junior Leaders and is a member of the Switzerland Sidewinders club. She has earned inclusion on the Honor Roll, and is a member of the Switzerland Baptist Church Youth Group. She enjoys singing and acting.

After high school her career plan is to attend Vanderbilt University to major in business and minor in performing arts.

– MAGNOLIA PAIGE CLAYTON is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Jennifer Scudder, State Farm Insurance; and she is the daughter of Penny Clayton. She is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School.

Maggie is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; student council; and the 4-H program. She was an All Conference member of the cross country team last year; and earned the ‘Heart Award’ in track, where she was a member of the 4×800-meter relay team that set a new school record. She attends Switzerland Baptist Church, where she is a member of the Youth Group.

Her career ambition is to attend college and study to become a marine biologist.

– ZOE ELISE COLE is the daughter of Adam and Amanda Cole, and she is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in the pageant by Javier Steel/Joe Deck.

Zoe earned the Benjamin Van Cleave Friendship Award; has earned numerous academic awards; and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is active in the Switzerland Baptist Church Youth Group; is active in 4-H; and was a member of the semistate-qualifying cross country team and the sectional track team.

After high school, she plans on attending Savannah College of Art and Design or Purdue University, and then pursue a career in sustainable interior design.

– ALLISON MICHELLE DETMER is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Swiss Caps, and she is a freshman this year at Switzerland County High School. She is the daughter of Allen and Michelle Detmer.

Allison is a member of the National Junior Honor Society; and has earned a spot on the All A/B Honor Roll. She enjoys horseback riding, acting, skiing, and cross country; and she is also active in the Switzerland County 4-H program. She also enjoys horse shows.

After high school, she plans on pursuing a career as an actress; as she has enjoyed acting since she started Drama Club in the fourth grade.

– ALEXANDRIA NICOLE EDWARDS is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School, and she is the daughter of Michael and Marla Edwards. She is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by RS Home Sales.

Alex is active in the FFA program; Business Professionals of America; and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a part of 4-H, where she is in the Junior Leaders; and is a part of the 4:12 Youth Group at Olive Branch Baptist Church. She has earned state recognition in FFA and BPA; as well as Grand Champion honors in 4-H.

She plans on graduating with an Academic Honors Diploma and then attend college to pursue a career as either a special education or agricultural education teacher.

– ALLEE JAE HOWLETT is the daughter of Aimee Howlett Ballard, and she is a sophomore this fall at Rising Sun High School. She is being sponsored in the pageant by Vevay Media Group.

Allee is a member of student council; and also the volleyball and track teams. She is a member of the 4:12 Youth Group at Olive Branch Baptist Church; and also the Switzerland County 4-H program. She enjoys hunting and fishing and horseback riding; and she also enjoys tap dancing.

After high school, she plans on going to nursing school and earning a degree in nursing, and wants to work as a diabetes endocrinologist.

– RILEY ELIZABETH KING is a junior at Switzerland County High School, and is the daughter of Melissa King and Jeremy King. She is being sponsored in the pageant by Homestead Realty.

Riley is a member of the National Honor Society, where she serves as secretary; and she also represented her high school at the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar. She was a member of the 2015 girls basketball Sectional championship basketball team;and the 2015 and 2016 ORVC champion track teams. She is also a member of the golf team, where she earned ‘Most Improved’ honors.

Her career goal after high school is to attend the Indiana University School of Medicine to major in dermatology.

-DESTINE LYNN PEELMAN is the daughter of Darrell and Beverly Peelman, and she is a freshman this year at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Roxano’s Restaurant.

Destine is the reigning 2015 Edelweiss Pre-Teen Princess; and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. She enjoys cheerleading, tumbling, and swimming, and is a member of the Pep Club.

During her time in high school, Destine plans on attending the Southeastern Career Center, training for a career as a cosmologist.

– CALLEIGH DAWNN POWELL is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by The Lantern Coffeehouse; and she is the daughter of Larry and Dawn Powell. She is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School.

Calleigh is active in the Business Professionals of America, where she has earned state awards and has qualified to attend the National Leadership Conference. She participates in soccer, where she serves as a team captain; basketball; student council; and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is an active member of the 4:12 Youth Group at Olive Branch Baptist Church.

After high school she plans on attending the University of Alabama to study genetic therapy, hoping to help diagnose genetic disorders.

– MARY ELIZABETH STREETT is the daughter of Tim and Stacy Streett, and is being sponsored in the pageant by Vevay Swiss Inn. She is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School.

Mary is the 2016 Queen of Hearts at Switzerland County High School; and she is active on the varsity swimming team; the varsity volleyball team; and the varsity cheerleading squad. She was secretary of the freshman class; is currently ranked #1 in the Class of 2019; and is active in the FFA, where she serves as Reporter. She is also active in BPA and 4-H, where she was the 2016 Horse and Pony Senior Showmanship winner. She was a 2015 Rep. Luke Messer 8th Grade Scholar.

After high school she would like to attend an Ivy League college and become a surgeon in the U.S. Army.

-KAITLYN AMBER YEARY is a freshman at Switzerland County High School, and is being sponsored in the pageant by the Shell Gas Station. She is the daughter of Jenn Coy.

Kaitlyn earned membership in the National Junior Honor Society; and enjoys playing soccer and basketball. She participates on the track team, where she is a high jumper; and she also enjoys rodeo and horseback riding.

After she finishes her education at Switzerland County High School, she plans on continuing her education in college, studying for a career as an occupational therapist.
