This year’s Swiss Wine Festival will be held in the Paul Ogle Riverfront Park on August 21st-24th, but festival events get underway this Sunday evening with the Princess and Prince Scholarship Program.
This year’s scholarship program will again be held at the Center Stage Showroom at Belterra Casino Resort and Spa; and will begin at 6:30 p.m. There is a $5 admission fee.
The winner of this year’s program will reign over the festival, helping hand out awards and trophies, and holding a prestigious spot in the Grand Festival Parade. The program is also good financially, as more than $5,000 in scholarship money will be awarded Sunday night.
This year there are 10 candidates for the title of Swiss Wine Festival Princess:
– JENNA RENEE DAUGHERTY: Jenna Daugherty is the daughter of Rob and Kathy Daugherty of Vevay, and she is being sponsored in the program by Pam’s Scissor Talk. She will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School.
She is active in high school sports, having been named the MVP of the golf team her sophomore year; earned the Mental Attitude Award in volleyball her sophomore year; and was All Conference in softball her junior year. She is also a member of the varsity basketball team.
She is a member of Key Club, serving as secretary her junior year; National Honor Society; Prom Committee; and STATS.
Following graduation she plans on attending college and earning a degree in radiology.
– LACI ELIZABETH DAUGHERTY: Laci Daugherty is being sponsored in this year’s program by Dr. Chris Sieglitz; and she will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School. She is the daughter of Rick and Debi Daugherty of Vevay.
She is a varsity cheerleader; and also participates in golf and track. She has earned the Most Improved Award in volleyball and track; and also earned academic awards in sports the past three years. She was the first “Student Idol” winner at Switzerland County High School; and has also won the “Relay for Life” talent competition and the Swiss Wine Festival talent competition.
She was the first runner-up in the FFA Queen of Hearts pageant; has been first runner up and second runner up of the Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant; and is a member of the National Honor Society; FFA; and Spring Branch Baptist Church.
After graduation she plans on attending Indiana University to study pre-optometry.
– BRENNA ALYSE GREEN: Brenna Green will be a sophomore this fall at IUPUI in Indianapolis, and is being sponsored in this year’s program by Edelweiss Floral. She is the daughter of Joe and Kaulene Green of Popcorn Ridge.
She earned the Paul Ogle Scholarship in 2007, and was a Top Ten Senior in her graduating class. She was also the recipient of the Wahl Scholarship, the Bosaw Scholarship; and is a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority at IUPUI.
She enjoys volunteering for various causes, and also volunteers her time working at the Ronald McDonald House. She also enjoys reading, listening to music, and singing.
Her career goal is to become a pharmacist, and after completing her education, she hopes to return to Switzerland County and open her own pharmacy.
– RACHEL LYNN GURLEY: Rachel Gurley is the daughter of Jennifer Miller of near Pleasant and James Gurley; and is being sponsored in the program by the Schenck Mansion Bed and Breakfast. She will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School.
She is a member of the FFA, where she will serve as president this year; and is also a member of the Pep Club and National Honor Society. She is the co-president of the student council; was vice president of the junior class; and was the 2006 Edelweiss Teen Princess.
She volunteers her time with the Special Olympics and with the Lions Club; enjoys spending time with her family and friends; and also enjoys reading Nicole Sparks books.
Following graduation she would like to attend Butler University and major in psychology; and would like to earn her master’s degree in psychology.
– EMILY CHRISTINE LANMAN: Emily Lanman will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School, and is the daughter of Patrick and Jacquita Lanman of Vevay. She is being sponsored in this year’s program by Vevay Newspapers, Inc.
She is a member of the National Honor Society; the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; 4-H; and student council. She is an officer in the FFA; is captain of the varsity cheerleaders; is a member of the golf team; and is a manager for the track team. She is also a member of the Spanish Club; and was the first runner up in both the 2005 and 2006 Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant.
She enjoys text messaging; driving; and watching basketball games.
Following graduation, she plans on attending college and pursuing a career as an event and wedding coordinator.
– KAITLYNN MICHELLE RAYLS: Katie Rayls is being sponsored in this year’s program by Switzerland Wholesale Supply; and is the granddaughter of Jeannie and Darrell Thurnall of near Moorefield. She will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School.
She was the third runner up in the 2005 Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant and the second runner up in the 2007 Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant. She is a member of the Business Professionals of America, FFA, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Pep Club. She is a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church Youth Group; and participates in volleyball, basketball, and track.
She enjoys riding four-wheelers and playing sports; as well as hanging out with friends.
Following graduation she plans on pursuing an associate’s degree in athletic training; and then a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy.
– MORGAN DANIELLE ROSS: Morgan Ross is a 2008 graduate of Switzerland County High School, and will be a freshman this fall at the University of Indianapolis. She is the daughter of Fred and Rita Ross of near Center Square; and is being sponsored in the program by Danner’s Village Gifts.
She earned the Lena Bush Award as the outstanding senior female; the ORVC Mental Attitude Award in softball; and the Scholastic Award in three sports all four years of high school. She was the president of the Key Club; secretary of the National Honor Society; and president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She participated in golf, basketball, and softball; and was a Pacer Post leader. She was the salutatorian of the Switzerland County High School graduating class of 2008.
She plans on pursuing a major of occupational therapy at the University of Indianapolis.
– KELSI BETH SOUTH: Kelsi South is the daughter of Jerry and Dianna South of Vevay. She will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School, and is being sponsored in this year’s program by State Farm Insurance agent Jennifer Scudder.
She is a member of the National Honor Society; “Who’s Who Among America’s High School Students”; and the Key Club. She is a member of STATS, Business Professionals of America, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has participated in volleyball in high school; and is a member of the golf and softball teams.
She enjoys spending time with her family and friends; and generally just having a good time.
Following graduation from Switzerland County High School, she plans on attending the University of Indianapolis to major in radiology.
– HEATHER MARIE THOMAS: Heather Thomas will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School, and is being sponsored in this year’s Princess Scholarship Program by RS Home Sales. She is the daughter of Harold and Tina Thomas of near Vevay.
Her school activities include being a member of the Business Professionals of America; Students Taking Action in Today’s Society; the French Club; the Pep Club; and she is also a member of the Key Club.
He hobbies include running, and she also enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
Once she finishes her career at Switzerland County High School, she plans on attending college to pursue her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher.
– ASHLEY BROOKE THORNTON: Ashley Thornton is the daughter of Renee Dixon of Vevay and Greg Thornton of Vevay; and is being sponsored in this year’s program by Vevay Shop Quik. She is a 2008 graduate of Switzerland County High School, and will be a freshman this fall at Ivy Tech Community College.
While in high school she was a member of the Business Professionals of America; the Conservation Club; and the yearbook staff. She was a member of the National Honor Society; “Who’s Who Among America’s High School Students”; and the National Honor Roll. She earned first place in the administrative support team at the state BPA competition; and was Miss Congeniality of the Swiss Wine Festival Princess program.
She is also active in the Switzerland County 4-H program.
In college she plans on pursuing a career in medical coding.
– MARY CARRINGTON TRUAX: Carrie Truax will be a junior this fall at Switzerland County High School; and is being sponsored in this year’s program by the Kiwanis Club of Vevay. She is the daughter of Larry and Julie Truax of Madison; and Candy and John Haskell of Vevay.
She is a member of the FFA; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Key Club; Spanish Club; STATS; the Pep Club; and the National Honor Society. She is a member of the Swiss Wine Festival Board of Directors, and was the 2007 Edelweiss Teen Princess. She is a member of the varsity basketball team; earned honors as the top student in biology; participates in 4-H; and is currently ranked number one in her class.
She is involved in helping with the family business; and also volunteers for community projects and activities and fundraising programs.
Her career goal is to graduate from Clemson University with a degree in telecommunications and then pursue a career as a newsanchor at a major television station.
– EMILEE RENELL WALDRON: Emilee Waldron is the daughter of Dorie and Greg Peelman of East Enterprise and Tony Waldron of Versailles. She is a 2008 graduate of Switzerland County High School, and will be a freshman this fall at Purdue University. She is being sponsored in the program by Tom T’s Electric.
She was the valedictorian of the Switzerland County High School Class of 2008; was treasurer of the FFA; treasurer of the senior class; and also the Pep Club. She was a varsity cheerleader; a member of the National Honor Society; captain of the math academic team; and was involved in 4-H. She was the Ninth District female recipient of the Americanism and Government Award; was the 2008 Queen of Hearts; second runner up in the Versailles Pumpkin Show Queen contest; and was first runner up in the 2007 Miss Switzerland County contest. She was also second runner up in the Swiss Wine Festival Princess contest in 2006 and 2007.
At Purdue she plans on pursuing a career as a pharmacist.
