Officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation have announced that work will resume on State Road 129 two weeks earlier than originally planned.

Brad Wathen, project engineer for INDOT, said that the new schedule means that the highway is expected to be closed to traffic this Wednesday, March 15th. Originally, the road was not going to be closed until April 1st.

“We are going to meet this Monday and look at the long range weather forecast,” Brad Wathen said. “We’re looking for snow. If there’s not snow in the forecast, then we’re a go for closing the road on the 15th.”

The advanced schedule means that State Road 129 will be completely closed to traffic starting one-half mile north of Jackson Road and extending to Cooper Lane and Long Run Road.

“We’re going to jump the work up two weeks and see if we can catch up some of the time we lost last year,” Brad Wathen said. “We want motorists to know about the early closing so that they can make plans now for alternate routes.”

The original detour is still in place. Those drivers coming from the south will be detoured at the intersection of highways 129 and 250 onto highway 250 going east. Drivers will stay on highway 250 to East Enterprise, where they will take State Road 56 south into Vevay.

Brad Wathen said that INDOT is informing Switzerland County EMS, the sheriff’s department, the post office, fire departments, and the school system about the closing.
