Sparks’ two-run homer leads Lady Pacers to win over Rising Sun
As they roll towards state tournament play, the Switzerland County Lady Pacer varsity softball team continues to make its mark as one of the best teams in the area.
In Friday, April 30th, the Lady Pacers suffered their first loss of the season in a 5-2 decision with Madison.
Switzerland County took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Jessie Duvall led off the inning with a single. With two outs Nora Hankins picked up a single; and Hailey Sainz followed that with an RBI single that plated Duvall.
Madison rebounded with a run to tie the game in the top of the fourth on a home run; and then erupted for four more runs in the top of the fifth to move out to a 5-1 lead.
The Lady Pacers tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, when with one out Jessie Duvall doubled. Lily Sparks then singled her home for Switzerland County’s second run, but that’s where the scoring and the winning streak came to an end.
Switzerland County stumbled again on Wednesday, May 5th, with a tough, 1-0 loss at South Ripley.
The Lady Raiders got the only run that they would need — and the only run of the game — in the bottom of the first on a home run.
Lily Sparks was the tough luck loser on the mound, registering 12 strikeouts over six innings. The home run was the only hit she allowed in the game.
The Lady Pacers got back to their winning ways on Friday, May 7th, with a huge 5-3 win over conference rival Rising Sun.
After allowing the Lady Shiners to get on the scoreboard first in the top of the opening inning, Switzerland County came right back and scored a run in the bottom of the first when Maddie Duvall reached on an error by the first baseman, and scored moments later on an RBI single by Lily Sparks.
The Lady Pacers took the lead in the bottom of the third when Keirstan Oeffinger led off with a single and Jessie Duvall doubled her home. Duvall then scored on a sacrifice fly by Sparks.
Action then moved to the bottom of the fifth, when Maddie Duvall reached on a double with one out and Sparks blasted a two-run homer.
Up 5-1, Switzerland County then held off Rising Sun in the top of the seventh, as the Lady Shiners scored two more runs, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Lady Pacers.
