Tomorrow (Friday), the Switzerland County boys basketball program is having a special theme to that night’s game – “Silent Night and Shoes for Kids”.
Pacer fans will remain quiet until the Pacers score their 10th point of the game, and then erupt into cheers and applause. Also, Coach B.J. McAlister and his staff will coach barefoot when they participate in “Samaritan’s Feet Barefoot Coaching Movement” to bring awareness to impoverished children.
As a part of the festivities, everyone attending the game is invited to get into the “Holiday Spirit” by wearing an ugly Christmas sweater.
The Barefoot Coaching Movement was conceived in 2007. In January 2008, IUPUI Coach Ron Hunter coached a game in his bare feet to raise awareness for the plight of impoverished children who suffer needlessly from foot-borne diseases and infections due to a lack of shoes.
This season, Coach McAlister will join Coach Hunter and thousands of coaches across the country by going barefoot to raise awareness and funding to help put 1,000,000 pairs of shoes on the feet of children through Samaritan’s Feet.
During the game, announcements will be made and posters at the gym will encourage fans to donate. Fans attending the game can text the word “shoes” to 85944 and a one-time gift of $10 will be added to their next month’s bill and an impoverished child will be given a new pair of athletic shoes.
Donations of new, never worn shoes will be accepted at the game, or cash contributions will also be accepted, with those funds going to buy shoes.
Everyone now also has the chance to order a special tee-shirt for the game, with proceeds going to the benefit organization.
