Shiners go to 3-0 in ORVC with 6-2 win over Shawe


Rising Sun is off to a 3-0 start in Ohio River Valley Conference play after a 6 to 2 win over Shawe on Monday in Madison.

Rising Sun scored two runs in the first as senior Kurtis Armstrong doubled with classmates Brady Murray and Mitchell Morris adding singles. Derrick Eldridge’s sacrifice fly made it 2 to 0.

Freshman Jake Bovard and Armstrong singled in the third with Eldridge (2-for-2, two RBIs) doubling in Bovard, Brent Turner and Jacob Sandlin singled to make it 5 to 1.

Brady Murray walked and scored in the fifth.

Shawe scored a solo run in the first and seventh inning off of Brent Turner. The sophomore right-hander scattered seven hits while striking out seven and walking two in getting the win. The Shiners did not commit an error behind him.

Armstrong and Eldridge had two hits each including doubles. Bovard, Murray, Turner, Morris and Sandlin had one hit as the Shiners had nine hits to seven for Shawe.

The Shiners opened ORVC play with a 10 to 2 win over Southwestern on Tuesday, April 12th at Rising Sun.

Southwestern took a 2 to 0 lead in the first but Rising Sun scored solo runs in the second and fourth to tie the score.

Morris walked and scored on a double by Sandlin in the second and Murray singled and scored on a fielder’s choice by Morris.

The Shiners put up eight runs in the sixth.

Murray opened the inning with a triple and added a single as 12 batters came to the plate.

Murray led the Shiners with 3-for-4 including a triple and three runs scored. Eldridge had two hits and an RBI. Morris had a pair of RBIs and two runs scored with Tyler Camden, Jason McClellan, Sandlin and Turner having a hit each.

Morris allowed just four hits while striking out 10 in getting the win.

Rising Sun defeated Milan 14 to 3 in a five inning 10-run rule win on Friday.

The Shiners scored one run in the first then scored nine in the second before Milan scored three in the third. Rising Sun regained a 10 run lead with four in the fourth.

They had six hits, three walks and a pair of errors to score nine runs.

McClellan and Morris led the Shiners with 3-for-3 and a pair of RBIs. Camden had a hit and three RBIs. Sandlin and Eldridge had a hit and two RBIs. Armstrong and Turner added hits as Rising Sun had 11 hits to two for Milan.

Both teams had defensive mistakes with Milan having seven errors and Rising Sun four.

Turner picked up the win with seven kills and three walks. All three runs were unearned.

Rising Sun split a doubleheader on Saturday with Seton Catholic.

The visitors took game one 9 to 2 with a 13 to 4 hitting attack.

Brent Turner had a pair of hits while Bovard and Camden had doubles

Derrick Eldridge suffered the loss allowing seven runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 2 and 1/3 innings. Jake Bovard pitched 4 and 2/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits with seven kills and five walks.

Rising Sun fell behind 1 to 0 in the first but scored in every other inning en route to a 10 to 4 win in game two.

McClellan got the win allowing two runs on two hits with five strike outs. Brayden Bush pitched two innings allowing two runs on two hits. Morris struck out three in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Morris and Bovard had three hits each and McClellan two hits. Armstrong, Eldridge, Turner, Sandlin, Camden and Kaleb Taylor had a hit each.

Rising Sun is 4-3 overall and was to host South Ripley on Wednesday. They travel to South Decatur for a doubleheader Saturday and play at Switzerland County Wednesday.
