Shiners fall to 10th ranked North Daviess, other top teams


Rising Sun traveled three hours for three days to compete in the Graber Post Buildings Classic at North Daviess High School in Elnora.

The Shiners continue to seek their first win of the season after losing three times including an opening round 56 to 43 loss to the host team on Tuesday, December 27th.

Both teams came out in deliberate offensive play with Rising Sun leading 9 to 4 after a 3-point play by Brent Turner for its largest lead of the night. North Daviess cut the deficit to 9 to 7 after one quarter. It was the first game that Rising Sun matched up size-wise with its opponent.

The Shiners regained the five point advantage on a pair of baskets by Jason McClellan who a strong first half on the boards with seven.

North Daviess (ranked 10th in Class A) picked up its defensive pressure and regained the lead as time expired, 23 to 21, at the half.

The win-by-the three, die-by- the three strategy turned in favor of North Daviess with three straight 3-pointers in the third quarter to open up a 32 to 21 lead.

The hosts outscored the Shiners 19 to 8 in the third quarter to lead 42 to 29 heading into the final eight minutes. The Cougars hit 11-for-13 from the field in the second half including 5-for-6 from 3-point range.

Rising Sun had its best shooting night with 15-for-28 from two point range for 56 percent and 0-for-4 from behind the arc. They were 13-for-16 from the free throw line.

The Shiners had 19 turnovers (two shy of their season high) while North Daviess had just four turnovers.

Nick Koons led Rising Sun with 16 including 10-for-12 at the free throw line. Brent Turner had seven followed by Jason McClellan and Trenton Gridley with six, Tristan Brown four, Jacob Bovard and Trevor Levi two each.

McClellan led the team with eight rebounds and three assists. Bovard had three steals.

North Daviess was led by Caleb Wagler with 26 points including a pair of 3-pointers. Colter Trueblood added 15 on five 3-pointers.

Rising Sun returned to Elnora on Thursday and were defeated by Princeton 69 to 39.

The Shiners trailed 12 to 8 after one quarter but fell behind 34 to 20 at the half and trailed 56 to 31 after three quarters.

Brent Turner led the Shiners with 14 points and eight rebounds. Nick Koons added eight points while Noah Pflum scored seven and grabbed four boards. Jason McClellan had six points and four rebounds. Tristan Brown scored four.

Rising Sun was 15-for-47 for 32 percent including 1-for-10 from behind the arc. They were 8-for-13 at the line and had 15 turnovers.

The Shiners dropped a 41-24 decision to South Knox on Friday, December 30th.

Rising Sun trailed 8 to 5 after one quarter and 18 to 14 at the half. It was 28 to 20 after three quarters before a 13 to 4 run in the final quarter led to the final.

Turner led the Shiners with eight points and eight rebounds. Pflum scored eight with McClellan six and Brown two.

The Shiners were11-for-33 from the field including 2-for-6 from behind the arc. South Knox was 15-for-28 for 54 percent from the field including 2-for-7 from 3-point land. The Shiners had 17 turnovers to 12 for South Knox.

The tournament included Class 2A number one ranked Barr-Reev which lost to Class 3A seventh ranked Brownstown Central 53 to 48. Brownstown Central had defeated Class 4A Evansville Reitz 106 to 104 in four overtimes on opening night.

Rising Sun returns to action tonight (Thursday) as they meet Lawrenceburg in the second game of the River Town Classic at South Dearborn.
