Shiners even record with win over Tigers

Rising Sun improved to 9-9 on the season with a 69 to 68 win over the Lawrenceburg Tigers on Saturday night at Rising Sun.

The Shiners lost to eventual River Town Classic tourney champions 73 to 56 on January 4th.

Junior Nick Koons scored 23 points (two off his career high) including a trio of 3-pointers to lead all scorers.

The Shiners led 19 to 15 after one quarter and 38 to 31 at the half. The Tigers cut the led to 54 to 50 after three quarters.

Logan Lawrence sored 13 of his team high 21 points in the final quarter. Gavin Yoon scored 17 Jason Morton 13. But the Tigers were without River Town MVP Curtis White.

Noah Pflum added 19 points for Rising Sun with a pair of 3-pointers, five rebounds and three assists.

Senior Jason McClellan added 10 points and six boards. Class mate Brent Turner added seven points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Trenton Gridley added six points and four boards.

Rounding out the scoring was Wes Rider with four and Jacob Bovard with two.

Rising Sun shot over 50 percent with 29-for-54 from the field. They limited their turnovers to 11.

Rising Sun dropped to 2-2 in Ohio River Valley Conference play after an 82 to 53 loss to league leading Southwestern (Hanover) on Friday night in Hanover.

The Class 2A No. 9 Rebels earned at least a share of the ORVC title with one ORVC contest remaining at Milan Friday.

The Shiners fell behind early and could never climb back. They trailed 20 to 6 after one quarter and 45 to 24 at the half.

Senior Trenton Gridley led RS with 16. Brent Turner had 14, followed by Nick Koons eight, Jacob Bovard five, Noah Pflum and Jason McClellan four each and Landon Cole two.

Rising Sun out-rebounded Southwestern 32 to 29 with Gridley puling down nine, McClellan eight, Turner seven, Wes Rider four, Koons three and Pflum one. McClellan and Pflum had three assists each and McClellan had three steals.

The Shiners were 20-for-49 from the field including just 3-for-15 from 3-point range. They had 21 turnovers with Southwestern recording 17 steals and 19 deflections.

Hunter Mefford led SW with 18 as five players reached double figures. Coleman Jones and Tyler Kramer had 17, Matthew Williams 15, and Foster Mefford 13,. Talon Harmon added two.

Rising Sun was in action Tuesday at Jac-Cen-Del and closes ORVC play at South Ripley Friday. They have a make up (non-conference) game with Milan on Saturday. They close the regular season at home against Trinity Lutheran on Friday, Feb. 23rd.
