Rising Sun opened the 2016-17 boys basketball season with a pair of losses during Thanksgiving week.
Coach Chris Jones’ squad hosted South Dearborn on Tuesday, Nov. 22nd and came up on the short end of a 53 to 39 score.
The game was tied twice in the opening quarter before a 3-pointer by Hunter Brindley gave SD a 12-11 advantage after one quarter.
Back to back baskets by Nick Koons and Noah Pflum gave Rising Sun its final lead at 17-14. Brindley buried a 3-pointer to tie the game at 17 as the Knights held a 20-17 halftime advantage.
Rising Sun had three players with two first half fouls and held the ball for the final 1:41 of the first half. With 11.4 left, Tristan Brown had the ball at mid-court when Brindley moved in to try and get a third foul on Brown. He didn’t but rammed head first into Brown’s elbow. Brindley lost two front teeth and Brown needed stitches in his elbow.
The injury didn’t appear to affect Brindley as he came out and hit one of six 3-pointers en route to a game high 21 points for the Knights.
Rising Sun trailed by nine before cutting the deficit to five, 33-28, after three quarters.
Noah Pflum’s 3-pointer closed the gap to one to start the fourth quarter.
SD’s Seth Couch and Tyler Morehead added 3-pointers and RS trailed 41 to 37 with 2:52 left when Brindley buried another 3-pointer.
The Shiners were forced to foul and SD managed to close out the contest with 6-for-6 from the line.
Brindley led SD with 21 points. Joey Tedesco had 20 including 8-for-10 at the line. They were 17-for-37 from the field including 10 from 3-point range. They had 30 rebounds to 28 for Rising Sun.
Rising Sun was led by Pflum with 12. Koons added 11 with 10 by Brent Turner. Brandon Benning added four and Brown two.
Turner led Rising Sun with eight rebounds while Angelo Gallegos and Pflum recorded five boards, Koons three, Brown two and Benning one. Gallegos had five assists while Koons had a pair of assists and steals.
Rising Sun traveled to South Ripley on Saturday where the talented Ohio River Valley Conference foe pressured the Shiners into 21 turnover en route to a 76-50 win.
Outside shooting keyed the outcome once again as the Raiders posted nine 3-pointers to just one for the Shiners.
South Ripley led 21-10 after one quarter, 42-21 at the half and 56-33 after three quarters.
South Ripley’s Charlie Turner connected on four 3-pointers to lead his team with 18 points. Cory Walker and Derek Turner added 13 each and Tyler Cole 10.
Rising Sun’s Brent Turner shared game high honors with 18 points. Plfum added 10, Koons eight, Jason McClellan six, Gallegos four, Trevor Levi and Trenton Gridley two each.
The Shiners shot 54 percent from two point range but just 1-for-12 from behind the arc.
Turner led RS in rebounding with eight. McClellan and Benning had six, Gallegos four, Levi three, Pflum and Gridley two, and Koons one. McClellan had four assists with Gallegos and Koons adding three. Turner and Pflum two each.
The Shiner JV squad lost to South Dearborn 39-32 and to South Ripley 32-24.
Wesley Rider led Rising Sun with 11. Levi added nine followed by Jake Bovard seven, Marc McClellan two and Jake Powell two, and Gridley one.
Mitch Manford had nine and Blaze Coffey eight to led SD.
South Ripley defeated RS reserves 32-24.
Bovard led Rising Sun with six. Steve Jimenez adding five, Powell four, Rider four, Levi two, Gridley two, and Daniel Daugherty one.
Aaron Greiwe led all scorers with 11.
Rising Sun will host South Decatur on Saturday.
