The Rising Sun Shiners opened the 2016 Ohio River Valley conference season with a 2-0 win over a hard fighting Switzerland County Pacers team on Thursday, Aug. 25th at Rising Sun.
Rising Sun was looking to bounce back from a 4-0 home opening loss to sectional rival Lawrenceburg.
Shiner coach Mike Seipel and Pacer coach Brian Grigsby each roster nine seniors. Shiner seniors include Josh Beyer, Tristan Brown, Derrick Eldridge, Angelo Gallegos, Bryant Housemyer, Mike Vecchiola, Tyler Walton, Scott Webb and Derak Woystek. The Pacer seniors include Nathan Braun, Nick Braun, Justin Green, Hunter Hayes, Tyler Manbeck, Joel Parham, Alex Powers and Cory Proffitt.
The two teams played in a preseason scrimmage and know each other well.
The Shiners started out in a possession style offense which didn’t seem to fit in with their normal aggressive play.
However, they did get on the board just over 10 minutes into the contest (29:36) as speedster Bryant Housemyer broke away for a 1-0 score. Housemyer had another shot on goal at the 12 minute mark that ricocheted from one post to the other before being corralled by Pacer keeper Justin Green. The Pacer defense kept its focus on Housemyer throughout the match.
Rising Sun maintained the 1-0 lead at the half.
The Pacers had just four shots on goal but saw a chance to even the score go wide with 30 minutes left in the second half after an attack build up by Iago Del Rio, Kyle Whitham and Kenyon Bledsoe.
An apparent game tying goal was scored with 26:06 left but the Pacers were flagged for being offside.
Green continued to be busy in goal thwarting the majority of the 30 shots recorded by the Shiners.
Rising Sun finally got an insurance goal as Nick Koons found freshman Zach Brokaw for a goal with 8:14 remaining.
Rising Sun recorded 13 corner kicks (the most this season) to four for the visitors. Shiner keeper Matt Martini had four saves in picking up the shutout.
Officials took water breaks midway through each half due to the heat index.
Rising Sun continued conference play as they traveled to Milan on Tuesday and hosted South Ripley Wednesday before a nine day layoff before traveling to Jac-Cen-Del on Friday, Sept. 9th.
