School coaches approved, tracking and tutoring programs working

The Rising Sun Ohio County School Board approved the job posting for the principal position at the Ohio County Elementary Middle School at its meeting on Thursday, Nov. 17th.

Superintendent Branden Roeder is currently serving in a dual role and principal and superintendent. The board hopes to name a new principal in March with a start on July 1.

In other personnel matters, the board approved posting two new positions for middle school baseball and softball coaches. Roeder said it is part of a trend among Ohio River Valley Conference schools. The teachers’ union had already approved.

Also posted will be the position of middle school soccer coach after the resignation of Ryan Dunagan.

Coaches for the fall of 2017 were approved including the return of Erin Gregory and Ken DeDreu as varsity and reserve volleyball coaches, Christina Rumsey and Jason Barth for girls’ soccer and Caitlin Sauerhage as cross country coach.

Robert Kelnhofer was approved to take over for Mike Seipel who had resigned as boys’ soccer coach. The assistant coach position remains posted.

An additional personal day for the middle school assistant principal was approved as it was omitted in error when additional days were approved for classified and administration employees.

An amendment was made to the salary ordinance to change the director of maintenance and corporation treasurer from salary to hourly because of federal mandate.

A public hearing was held to approve the published contract for Roeder as superintendent.

The girls basketball team was given approval for an overnight stay to play in a holiday tournament at Speedway.

Roeder submitted a tutoring report request by board president Corey Potts. The program is working. Potts pointed out the purpose of the school is not to punish students but to help them out. There were seven students given tutoring this fall and all passed.

Roeder reviewed guidelines on how the school is tracking students from sixth grade through high school

Roeder reported, as principal, that progress reports just came out and there are more Fs than normal. He will be contacting parents. Students must pass 6 out of 8 credits to advance.

The high school offers intercession and credit recovery along with ACT and SAT help during plus period. Potts asked about the high school tracing policy and the need to have something in writing like the middle school.
