School Board filings slow

The deadline for candidates wanting to run for seats on the Switzerland County School Board this November, is next Friday, August 24th, at noon, and with just over a week to go, sign ups continue to be slow, with only the incumbents and one other candidate having filed.
Three of the board’s seven seats will be up for election on November 6th, with the winners beginning four year terms on January 1st, 2019.
The three seats represent Craig Township; Posey Township; and Jefferson Township excluding the town of Vevay. Greg Bosaw currently holds the Craig Township seat; Jill Cord holds the Jefferson Township seat; and Joe Bennett holds the Posey Township seat.
As of Wednesday morning, Bosaw, Cord and Bennett have filed for reelection; and Adam Cole has filed for the Jefferson Township seat.
Candidates have until noon on Friday, August 24th to file. Paperwork may be picked up in the Switzerland County Clerk’s Office. Candidates who have second thoughts and decide to withdraw from the election may do so up until noon on Monday, August 27th.

School Board meets this Monday

The Switzerland County School Board will hold its regular monthly meeting this Monday night, August 20th. The meeting will be held at the administration building on West Main Street.
The school board will hold an executive session beginning at 5:30 p.m. that evening. In accordance with Indiana law, a public entity must state the specific Indiana code that allows for a meeting in private. For Monday’s meeting, the school board is citing IC 5-14-1.5-6.1(b)(9): “To discuss a job performance evaluation of individual employees. This subdivision does not apply to a discussion of the salary, compensation, or benefits of employees during a budget process.” The board is also citing IC 5-14-1.5-6.1(b)(2)(B): “Initiation of litigation or litigation that is either pending or has been threatened specifically in writing.”
The school board will then meet in open public session beginning at 6 p.m. Items on the agenda include:
— In Personnel: changes and additions to the extra curricular list; information on employee transfers; and employment resignations.
— In New Business: the board will discuss requests to the endowment; an agreement with the M.A. Rooney Foundation; an agreement with Highpoint Health and Beacon Orthopaedics; and will discuss a recommendation to add the Switzerland County High School Bowling Team to the ECA list.
— There will be time for board committee reports; use of school facilities applications; and there will be announcements as needed by Superintendent Rod Hite.
The meeting is open to the public.
