Running rivalry renewed at South Dearborn Invitational


Rising Sun’s Zach Martini and Oldenburg Academy’s Curtis Eckstein renewed their cross country rivalry in the 3200 meter run at the South Dearborn Invitational.

Eckstein set a new record with a time of 9:35.22 pushing Martini to a personal best time of 9:49.69, just two seconds off the school record. Trevor Levi was fourth with his own PR of 10:41.33.

Batesville swept the team title including 145 in the boys’ meet followed by Franklin County 95, Lawrenceburg 74, Oldenburg 64, South Dearborn 60, Rising Sun 29, Switzerland County 16 and South Ripley 13.

Rising Sun’s lone win was by Derrick Eldridge in the discus. He had an effort of 127’5″ then skipped the shot put to catch a bus for the band’s trip to Washington D.C.

Levi added a third in the 1600 (4:53.14) while the 4×800 relay team of Kyle See, Matt Martini, Levi and Zach Martini placed sixth (9:59.31).

Switzerland County was led by the 4×100 relay team of Logan Parton, Brody Splain, Keegan Morris ad Cameron Niswander with a third place time of 47.2.

Morris was fourth in the 100 (12.09) and fifth in the 200 (24.2). Will Pike added a fifth in the 400 (55.93).

The 4×400 relay team of Pike, Parton, Niswander and Nolan Armstrong was sixth (4:06.8).

Brad Ricketts was sixth in the discus (108′”).

Batesville scored 177 points in the girls’ meet. Franklin County had 83 followed by Oldenburg 74, Switzerland County 70, South Dearborn 47, South Ripley 23, Rising Sun 19 and Lawrenceburg 2.

Mariah Northcutt led Switzerland County with a win in the 100 hurdles (18.42) with Jade Mullins sixth (20.05). Northcutt added a third in the 300 hurdles (51.66) .

Makayli Scudder won the high jump (4’8″) and was second in the long jump (14’4.5″). Emma Gigilo was fourth in the high jump (4’4″) and fifth in the long jump (13’6.5″).

Rising Sun’s best finish was a second by Abby Wallace in the discus (86’9″). Riley Chipman was sixth (78’3″).

Natalie Newman was third in the shot put (31’4″) and fourth in the discus (83’3″).

Lucy Carrigan placed third in the 100 (13.55) and teamed with Morgan Bush, Kasey Bailey and Chipman for fourth in the 4×100 (57.72.

Brianna Vinup joined Gigilo, Scudder and Northcutt for fifth for the Pacers.

Leah Anders, Magnolia Clayton, Mackenzie Covington and Cameron Ray was fourth in the 4×800 (10:59.27).

Anders was fourth in the 800 (2:36.78) while the team of Covington, Anders, Clayton and Northcutt was fourth in the 4×400.

Ray was fifth in the 1600 (6:31.32) and Covington fifth in the 400 (1:06.73).

Switzerland County will host the Vevay Media Group Invitational tonight (Thursday) and Rising Sun will host its own invitational on Thursday, May 5.
