Rotary Club ending after 84 years but community fund will live on


The Rising Sun Rotary Club was established June 2, 1933 and has proudly served the Ohio County and surrounding communities for the past 84 years.

The club will be closing on May 12, 2017, and wishes to thank our community, Rotary International, our Rotary District Governor, as well as past and present Rotary members. Without their support and/or generous donations, our service projects and sponsorships would not have been made possible. 

The Rising Sun Rotary Club has sponsored and been involved in many projects with a primary emphasis on youth programs and community projects benefiting Ohio County.

Those programs and projects include but are not limited to the following:

Promoted youth activities by sending a young man to Indiana Boys State each year along with American Legion Post 59; Sponsored Cub Scout pack #650, assisted with the Boy Scouts program, and provided a place to meet; Sponsored youth baseball teams; Gave recognition to Top 10 Senior Students;  Participated in the Good Citizenship Award for a graduating senior;

Sponsored the formation of the Aurora Rotary Club in 1936; Active through Adolph Siekman in obtaining a new bridge over Laughery Creek on State Rd 56; Active in bringing natural gas to Rising Sun;

Sponsored changes in highway passing lanes and signs on State Rd 56, and active in improving State Rd 56 in the Rising Sun and Aurora area; Active in effort to correct the road slip known as “Woody’s Hump” on State Rd 56 near; Sponsored the original project to obtain ferry service between Rising Sun and Rabbit Hash, KY;

Sponsored and supervised playgrounds for Rising Sun children during summer vacation. This was followed by regular band concerts, an Annual Easter egg hunt, rural-urban meetings, and interchange of meetings with other Rotary clubs; Active in developing the first Industrial Park Area on Industrial Drive Rd; Members contacted Business and Professional people to assist in raising money for cancer research and awareness;

Promoted and supported US hostages in Iran in 1971-81; Sponsoring the 4-H Livestock Auction since 1972; 

Held Rotary Pancake Day to raise funds for many of our projects; Made contributions to the Rotary foundation; Supported Denver Siekman environmental park by providing a bench and shelter in the park;

Provided funds to assist in the construction of playground equipment in the Roy Turner Park on Burgess Avenue;

Gave support to Mayor John Roeder for tree plantings at the park near the elementary middle school; Contributed to the Learning Tree of Ohio County Inc.;  Supported the Lewis and Clark program for Ohio County with a booth serving pancakes and sausage; Worked on a project to construct flashing lights for the school crossings on State Route 262 and State Route 56; Worked on a project to provide a walkway on State Route 262 across Dry Branch Bridge;

Helped to promote Historic Hoosier Hills activities;  Offered DNA testing kits for parents of children in 2002;  Sponsored Aaron Ryan of Lawrenceburg as an exchange student to Iceland’s Foroyar Islands in 2004-2005; Provided funds, along with private donations and a grant from the Rising Sun Regional Foundation to construct playground equipment in the Roy Turner Park on Burgess Ave;

Provided funds to bring Live Line Demo, Inc. program to the Rising Sun High School and community;  Provided funds to bring Kelly Hill Circus to the community in 1989;

Provided funds to send 4 students to RYLA program. This program offers leadership training to high school juniors and seniors; Helped sponsor a publication for the Freedom Moving Wall Exhibit in 2008;

Helped the Cub Scouts secure funds for a new electronic Pinewood Derby track, and a storage building for supplies and equipment;  Provided funds to give dictionaries to all third-grade students in Rising Sun schools;  Held a booth at the river days events; Helped sponsor summer basketball camp at Rising Sun High School; Provided funds for two high school senior students to attend the The World Affairs Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio; Sponsored the Rising Sun After Prom;

Jimmy Dorrell, Carroll Sheldon, Wayne Chipman, Robert Howard, and Virgil Neaman are Paul Harris Fellows. 

The Rising Sun Rotary tradition of service will not end with the closing of the club. The Rising Sun Rotary Club Endowment Fund was established with matching contributions from the Eli Lily Foundation and the Ohio County Community Foundation in April 2017.
