Rivertown championship earned by Lady Pacer softball team

The Switzerland County Lady Pacer softball team earned the championship of the Rivertown Classic Softball Tournament at South Dearborn on Saturday by defeating South Dearborn and Rising Sun.

In the tourney’s opening round, it was Switzerland County picking up a 4-2 win over the Lady Knights.

Kodi Driver only had two strikeouts in the game, but didn’t allow a base on balls for the game.

South Dearborn scored first with two unearned runs in the third inning, benefiting from two Switzerland County errors. Down, Switzerland County came back with a run in the fourth inning.

Down 2-1 in the sixth, Tanya Sefton led off with a single, then stole second and then scored on Kodi Driver’s sacrifice fly to tie the game. It stayed that way until the seventh, when Ashley Chase reached on an error; and Natalie Graham followed with a base hit. A Jaclyn Ranz walk loaded the bases; and after South Dearborn recorded an out at the plate on a fielder’s choice; Tanya Sefton singled to knock in the third and fourth runs of the game.

Natalie Daugherty also had a stellar game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Other hits for the Lady Pacers were collected by Holly Jackson, Brittany Cole, and Ashley Chase.

“Everyone contributed to the win and played a role in the victory,” Coach Steven Konkle said.

In the championship game, Switzerland County broke out early and defeated Rising Sun going away by an 11-0 score in six innings.

Kodi Driver had seven strikeouts in picking up her second victory of the day; allowing only two walks and three hits.

Seven players had hits in the game, led by Brittany Cole, who was 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and one stolen base. Natalie Daugherty had two hits; Natalie Graham had two hits including a double; and Ashley Chase had a triple. Holly Jackson had a double in the game; and Tanya Sefton and Sara Craig each had singles.

Nine different team members scored runs in the contest, led by Courtney Cole and Tanya Sefton with two each. Also scoring were: Holly Jackson, Brittany Cole, Kodi Driver, Sara Craig, Natalie Daugherty, Natalie Graham, and Jaclyn Ranz.

It is the first Rivertown Championship in softball for Switzerland County, who remained undefeated on the season.
