Rising Sun to get tourney experience

 The Rising Sun Lady Shiners will be competing in the Speedway Invitational Basketball Tournament today (Thursday) in the Indianapolis suburb.

   Coach Abby Friend’s girls (2-9) play the host Lady Sparkplugs (6-5) in the opening game at 9:30 a.m. The second game will pit the Indiana School of Deaf (9-1) and North Putnam (7-7). There will be a consolation game followed by finals.

  Speedway has six players on its roster between 5’10” and 6’. Senior Karly Smith (6’) averages 8.5 points and 5.3 rebounds with classmate Hannah Lindsey adding 8 points including 17 3-pointers and 5.2 boards. Sophomore Maddie Barnes has 14 of the team’s 51 3-pointers on the season.

   Both teams have nearly identical rebounding stats as Rising Sun is led by sophomore Lindsey Montgomery with 9.4 boards and Danyka Groover with 6.6 per contest. Groover leads the team with 12.7 points while Montgomery adds 11.9 and Maddi Wilson 9.1.

  Speedway averages 51.9 points while Rising Sun scores 39 per contest.

   Rising Sun will return to action in the Rivertown Classic on Wednesday Jan. 2nd when they play Lawrenceburg in the second game of the evening. South Dearborn will host Switzerland County in the opener at 6 p.m.

   Coach Rick Scholl’s Shiners will play North Decatur in the opening game of the North Decatur Invitational on Friday, Dec. 28th at 10:30 a.m. The two teams defeated South Decatur this season. Rising Sun was a 64-42 winner while North Decatur won 60-45.

   The Class A Shiners (2-4) will meet the Chargers (6-2), ranked 17th in the latest Class 2A state poll, with the winner advancing to the finals to play the winner of the Class 2A second-ranked and unbeaten (7-0) Southwestern (Hanover) Rebels and Yorktown (2-5). 

   Rising Sun lost a heart breaking 58-56 decision to North Decatur a year ago but came back to post a 73-56 win over Yorktown in the consolation game, led by five 3-pointers by Jake Bovard.

    The Chargers two losses are to Greensburg and a 52-47 loss to South Ripley.

    Senior Nick Koons leads the Shiners with 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. Noah Pflum adds 9.2 points and 2.7 assists. Jake Bovard adds six points and TJ Manifold adds five points and a team best 6.5 rebounds.

    The Shiners will play Lawrenceburg in the Rivertown Classic on Thursday, Jan. 3rd.
