Rising Sun Regatta is August 13th-14th

Powerboat racing on the Ohio River takes place at the 2016 Rising Sun Regatta held in Rising Sun on Saturday and Sunday, August 13th-14th.

Weather and race conditions permitting, opening ceremonies for the 2016 Rising Sun Regatta begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 13th and noon on Sunday, August 14th. Racing concludes at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Driver autograph sessions are Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. with an awards ceremony and autograph session on Sunday from 4-4:30 p.m. Vendors and kids’ activities open at 11 a.m. both days.

A bluegrass band performs on Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m.

The Rising Sun Regatta features tunnel boats that are similar to hydroplanes, but run outboard engines. The vessels get their name because of their design that encompasses two planing hulls combined with a solid center. The entrapment of air from a closed center creates lift.

Regatta attendees can sit in the amphitheater to view the action or bring lawn chairs and enjoy the activities and music along the riverfront. Viewable from Rising Sun Riverfront Park along Front Street, the free event includes kids’ activities, arts and crafts, food, commercial vendors and more.

“The Rising Sun Regatta is a wonderful event to showcase our county and Rising Sun’s beautiful waterfront location,” said Kendal Miller, Ohio County Tourism executive director. “It’s also a history lesson that adds additional memories to Rising Sun’s powerboat story.”

Miller explained that the event wouldn’t be possible without the help and collaboration of the tourism board, many sponsors, city and county agencies, and volunteers.

The Indianapolis Colts in Motion interactive museum will be on display on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and features team memorabilia and six interactive televisions and highlights of Colts playmakers both past and present. Activities include comparing your hands to those of Colts Quarterback Andrew Luck and Colts Wide Receiver T.Y. Hilton, testing your Colts knowledge and more.

The event is free and open to the public for spectators. The Regatta is sponsored by Ohio County Tourism, the City of Rising Sun, the Ohio County Community Foundation, the Rising Sun Regional Foundation, and many area businesses.
