The seventh annual Switzerland County “Relay For Life” event to raise money for cancer research was held on Friday and Saturday night at the track at Switzerland County High School; and enthusiastic volunteers walked their way to raising more than $22,000 to help find a cure for cancer.
Zach Getz, a 2006 graduate of Switzerland County High School, has been accepted to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University of Daytona Beach, Florida. He will pursue a degree in aeronautical science.
Katie Wright was crowned as the 2006 Miss Switzerland County Fair Queen at the pageant held Friday night in the Switzerland County High School cafeteria.

Bill Edwards won the Switzerland County horse pull Saturday night sponsored by the local 4-H Fair Board. Gilbert and Carpenter came in second place. A pair of horses, “Shorty” and “Little Horse”, owned by Butch Konkle of near Vevay entered in the name of his father, Ernie Konkle, finished in 14th place. Charlie Jester’s team from Moorefield finished 18th overall. It was a crowd pleasing horse pull attested to by the bleachers on both sides of the grandstand area full of specters.
Boston Celtic legend Larry Bird and his wife, Dinah, dined here on their way back from a public appearance in Cincinnati. They were the guests of Vevay’s Randy Ricketts and his wife Pam. Randy Ricketts became friends with the NBA superstar while the two were students at Indiana State University.
Ray Minch was seriously injured in Vevay last Thursday when he was hit by a falling tree limb as he was at work cutting down the tree. He was knocked unconscious by the blow and his brother Bill Minch secured him to the tree before going for help. The problem was solved when the Jefferson Craig Fire Department got to the scene with their new ladder truck and got Ray Minch out of the tree. He was taken to the hospital where he is recovering.

The Switzerland County School Board of Trustees Tuesday night named the new superintendent to replace William Rentschler who resigned at the April 23rd school board meeting. Dr. Perry Glancy will begin his duties here July 1st. Also named Tuesday night was Ron Redmon of Vevay to serve as principal at Jefferson Craig Elementary School.
Angela Reed and Travis Althoff have announced their engagement. An August wedding is being planned.
The Spoonbill Catfish, an ancient species thought to be extinct in the Ohio Valley a few years ago, is now making a strong comeback – thought they’re still rare in the river. Some boaters at Turtle Creek Harbor at Florence brought a huge “spoonbill of “paddle mouth” if you prefer in for Marty McGraw and her son Ollie to admire.

Kim Hutcherson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hutcherson, route 1, Patriot, will represent Switzerland County in Monday’s Miss Madison Regatta beauty pageant. She joins other candidates from Jefferson, Clark, Jennings, Floyd and Bartholomew counties in Indiana and Henry County, Kentucky, in the pageant to be held in the Center of Fine Arts on the Hanover College campus at 8 p.m. slow time.
Switzerland County won the 1985-86 Ohio River Valley Conference boys all-sports championship by just one point. They ended up with 52 points in the conference, just ahead of Southwestern’s 51. South Ripley was right behind with 50 points and Rising Sun had 46.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Sullivan of Madison will celebrate their 40th anniversary by renewing their wedding vows. The couple was married July 5th, 1946 in Carrollton. On Saturday, July 5th, they will renew their vows at the First Church of God in Madison Mr. Sullivan is a native of Switzerland County.

The new bridge at Long Run was opened for State Road 129 traffic last Thursday and Long Run celebrated that event Thursday night by running out of its banks, spilling over on to a goodly portion of corn and tobacco crops on the farm of Jesse Riley, just down stream from the new span. The Indiana State Highway Commission plans to build another new bridge on 129, a mile south of this one, but work on that project’s not been scheduled as yet.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence E. Conlon of Quercus Grove, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Betsy Anita, to Mr. Rickie Ray Wainscott, Quercus Grove, son of Marion D. Wainscott, of near Quercus Grove, and the late Mrs. Wanda Gulley Wainscott,The wedding ceremony will be held Saturday, July 10th, at 6:30 p.m. in the First Church of Christ, Greendale.
Warren T. Sullivan III, son of Warren T. (Jack) Sullivan, Jr, of Vevay is scheduled to participate in the International Naval Review in New York harbor on the 4th of July as crewman of the Navy’s guided missile carrier, the USS Dale.
Virginia “Ginger” Blasdel Furnish of Switzerland County has been named to the honor roll at the Indiana University Southeast for the recently completed Spring semester. To qualify for the honor roll IUS students must achieve at least a B-plus grave average.
Three Switzerland County students were awarded academic degrees during commencement exercises at Ball State University. They are Jay Farrar, Dinah Lock and David Paugh.
Poetry by Robin Morton of Pleasant has been selected for publication in a series to anthologies of poetry written by high school students throughout the United States. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Morton of Pleasant.

Knights of Pythias of Indiana installed James L. Harris as Grand Chancellor last Friday in impressive ceremonies at Patriot. He was given the gavel by his father Guy S. Harris. Past Supreme Representative of Indiana Pythias. This marks the first time in the 99-year history of pythianism in this state that the son of a Past Grand Chancellor has been elected to this high office.
Private lines and dial phones will be in operation in Aurora, Lawrenceburg and Guilford area by September 1967, it has been announced by officials of the United Telephone Company.
Ruter Chapel Methodist Church, Main Street, Vevay, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, joining the State of Indiana in its sesquicentennial observance. Founded in 1816. The present church structure was built in 1859. In 1957 the church was named a Methodist Shrine, one of five in the state. The floor plans of the church are on file in the Archives in Washington, D.C.

Death claimed the life of one of Switzerland County’s best known citizens Friday morning, with the sudden passing of James Kirby Danglade, former publisher of this newspaper. Mr. Danglade, who was 60 years old, passed away about 10 a.m., Friday following a worsening of an illness that kept him bedfast for almost six months.
A beautiful wedding took place Friday evening June 29th, in the Fredonia Baptist Church, when Miss Mary E. Lock became the bride of Mr. Norris E. Krall.
Miss Mary Leo Lewis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde A . Lewis, route 2 Vevay and John Archer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Archer, route 1, Vevay were married Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Caledonia Church.
Omer Powers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Powers of Florence, will appear on “Schiff Starmaker Revue,” on television station WLW-TV Cincinnati, Sunday July 8th, at noon. The boy was a recent winner on the Vevay Kiwanis Youth Talent Search and the audition is part of the awards won by him.

Miss Doris Brindley, route 4, Vevay, and Meredith Hysell of Aberdeen, were married Saturday morning by Reverend Leland S. Courtney of his residence in Vevay.
Miss Martha Ann Raisor of the Bear Branch community and John F. Knigga of Fairview were married at the home of the officiating minister, Reverend Frank Reed, in Vevay on Friday, June 28th.

Vevay lost its oldest and largest dairy Tuesday evening when Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stoops, proprietors of the establishments, announced that they were going out of business. The dairy was started by them in 1910 with only two cows, the milk being delivered in buckets to customers, the herd later growing to 65 cows. In the 26 years the dairy has been in operation no delivery has been missed.
Miss Nellie Reser and Carl Trimble, both of Vevay, were married June 11th at the home of Reverend W. F. Badgett, the officiating minister.
The long drawn out drought which as destroyed many Switzerland County crops was broken here Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning when heavy rains poured down on the brown thirsty fields, filling cisterns and allowing livestock to drink their fill for the first time in many weeks.
The large tobacco storage warehouse in Carrollton owned by Ralph Barker was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning.
The Ohio River again took its toll of human life Sunday afternoon when Charles Miller of Lawrenceburg was drowned while bathing at Danglade beach below Vevay.
Miss Margaret Brameier of Florence and John Witters of Hebron, Indiana were united in marriage Sunday evening June 14th, by Reverend Urban F. Johansman in Reformed Church at Florence.

J. W. Whitlock of Rising Sun piloting his famed racing boat “Hoosier Boy” not only won the big ‘free for all’ races at Louisville, Kentucky, Monday, but established a new world record of 62.5 miles per hour.
Frank Hunt, first assistant engineer of the U.S. Dredge. C. B. Harris, was drowned at Mound City, Illinois, Friday, when he fell off the boat. Mr. Hunt was well known in Vevay and made many friends last year when the Harris was stationed here during the summer.
John Heady of Vevay piloted the Hoosier Boy’s dock barge to Louisville Saturday with a crowd of Rising Sun fans aboard.

Five tires were stolen from an automobile belonging to Roscoe Graham at Mount Sterling last Wednesday night.

Thomas P. Griffith and wife, each aged about 65, were both drowned in the Ohio River at Ghent, Kentucky Sunday when an automobile driven by Mr. Griffith crashed through the rail of the ferryboat and plunged into the river.
Incendiaries Saturday night attempted to burn the Markland post office but some paper which had been placed in a windows and lighted burned itself out without spreading to the main part of the building.
James C. Nelson of route 2, Vevay was married in Crawfordsville, Indiana June 27th to Miss Faye Brown of New Ross, Indiana.
Saturday was the first day of the open season on squirrels and a party of Vevay men went to Laughery Creek hunting for the day. Those in the crowd were Harry A. Knox, Charles L. Kincaid, George B. Hall, Kirby Danglade, George B, Hall, Jr. and Earl S Brown. The party killed 21 squirrels, Charles Kincaid carrying off the honors with a kill of 15.

Miss Effie Hinman and Sam North, both of Posey Township, were married Thursday evening at the home of the bride’s parents on Paradise Ridge.

Ray Buchanan, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Buchanan of Scotch Settlement was fatally injured last week in an explosion of powder while he was employed by a railroad company in Green County, during a blasting operation.
Avery Graham, Jaspar Fallis, Tom Danglade, Harry Davison, Frank Weaver, Willie Wahl, Willie Roberts and Fred Thunemann are spending 10 days camping on Laughery Creek.
Will Stevens, Opp Sieglitz and Ben Welch are camping this week on the Kentucky River.
A daughter was born June 29th to Mr. and Mrs. William H. Demann.
Reverend J. N. Jerman will occupy the pulpit of the M. E. Church next Sunday after an absence of two months caused by a diseased limb.

The barn of Miss Caby Froman of near Ghent was struck by lightning but not set afire.
Tildin Rayles of Tapps Ridge is the proud owner of a fine new buggy.
Messers Irvin Bettman and Irvin M. Bettman of Cincinnati arrived here last Saturday evening. They started from Cincinnati on their bicycles but were caught at Rising Sun in the rain and were compelled to finish their trip by boat.

Great preparations are being made for the Fourth of July picnic which will be held on the East Enterprise Fair Grounds.

The annual concert of the Madison Musical Academy took place last week. Miss Dora Waldo of Vevay was highly complimented on her piano solo “Home Sweet Home” and a vocal solo, “Gaily I Thrill.” She was accompanied at the piano by Miss Brandt.
Last Tuesday evening a large number of Republican voters assembled at the Court House for the purpose of ratifying the nomination of Hayes and Wheeler.
Newbold and Lyon have discontinued the livery stable business.
The debt of Switzerland County is $12,138.91.
John Dickason and daughters, Mary and Kittie, started for the Centennial Exposition last Wednesday.

Last Tuesday the three-year-old son of William Mansfield had three fingers mashed in a hay press.
The name of William Mead is announced as a candidate for County Treasurer and Captain E. H. Martin as candidate for sheriff at the next October election.
