Switzerland County’s Mike Scudder high jumped 6 feet 6 inches last Thursday to claim the championship of the high school track and field regional competition held at Connersville High School.
Michael Gault, leading scorer this year on the Switzerland County boys varsity basketball team, heads the recruiting class that will be freshmen next fall at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
Tehya Allen has been named as Switzerland County High School’s Trig-Star for this year. She is the daughter of Richard and Toni Allen of Fishing Worm Ridge, and won the designation by participating in a competition held in teacher Rick Weales’ trigonometry class.

Switzerland County’s Michelle Raisor has earned her third straight trip to the Girls State Track meet with an impressive performance in the Regional meet last week in Greenwood, Indiana.
The top 10 seniors have been announced at SCHS. They are: Carla Althoff, Shanna Armstrong, Rusty Burley, Greg Nixon, Marci Leap, Lora Reed, Sheila Kelly, Lori Allison, Julie Bishop, and Tricia Bruce.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Goodner of near Fairview will observe their Golden Wedding anniversary on June 8th. An open house will be given in their honor on Sunday, June 9th, at their home by their children.

Vevay’s very popular Farmer’s Market, revived last summer after many years of absence, will open for the current season Saturday morning in Market Square, Farmer’s Market will be held every Wednesday and Saturday morning throughout the summer and into the fall, as long as Switzerland County’s garden produce keeps getting produced, and people keep showing up in Market Square to buy it.
Cloris Leachman, one of the stars of “A Girl Named Sooner,” filmed in Vevay, has decided she wants a piece of Vevay’s atmosphere in Los Angeles. Juliet Hoffstadt, of Madison, said Miss Leachman called her yesterday and asked her to buy a seven-foot porch swing like the one she saw in a Vevay store window during last summer’s filming.
Switzerland County’s new doctor opens up his office in Vevay Monday, bringing to two the number of physicians serving this area. That’s at least one doctor less than is needed here, according to the experts. The new physician is Dr. Garre Blair, who will go to work in his new offices on East Main Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph T. Miller announce the engagement of their daughter, Janet Lynn, to H. Kent Hendricks, of Bloomington, Indiana, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Hendricks, of Potomac, Maryland. The wedding is scheduled for June 14th in the Vevay Christian Church.

A-2C Robert H. Riggs, son of Mrs. Marie B. Riggs, left Vevay May 27th for Vanberburg Air Force Base in California where he is to report for duty Friday.
Amy Delores McKay will receive a bachelor of arts degree (in biological science and chemistry) Sunday at commencement exercises of Ball State University. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McKay of Braytown, and is a Vevay High School graduate.
Switzerland County 4-H Club 1965-66 junior leaders officers were elected last week with Albert Allen Detmer being named President.
Mr. and Mrs. Goebel D. Brown of York Township have announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Lura Jane, to James Ray Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond E. Moore of Alamo.
Mrs. Gladys Curtis and Charles Kincaid were married Saturday evening in a simple and impressive ceremony performed by Reverend Donald Goben at Vevay Methodist Church.

James Raymond Rook, son of Mrs. Bessie Rook, Vevay, will be married June 19th at 5 o’clock to Mary Kay Reid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Reid, at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, Hartsdale, New York.
Miss Wilena Carlton, daughter of Mrs. Lorena Carlton of Vevay, and Norris Lee Conner, of East Enterprise, were united in marriage Saturday evening at the Vevay Methodist parsonage by Reverend H.G. Ramsey, who used the double ring ceremony.
Mrs. Irvin Lock of Florence is now the strawberry queen of the county. A box brought to us last week contained 21 berries and one of them measured 5 inches around.
60 YEARS AGO
Mrs. Katherine Bakes, wife of Dr. F.C. Bakes of Vevay, passed away at the Madison Hospital Thursday morning where she had been a patient a little more than a week.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Elsrod of near East Enterprise have learned that their son, Technical Sergeant Orville “Bill” Elsrod, has been freed from a German prison camp. He was captured last August when his plane was shot down.
Carl A. Joyce, resident of the Moorefield community, died at the Milan hospital, Thursday morning, May 24th, after an illness of several months.
For the third time, Staff Sergeant David L. Leap has been found safe after being reported missing. A waist gunner on a B-24 Liberator, he was first reported missing in action in August, 1944 and the second time on March 22nd, 1945, when he was missing over Czechoslovakia. He had been listed as missing over Austria since April 25th.
Mrs. Grace Douglas, aged 68 years, native and former resident of Switzerland County, died at her home in Franklin, Indiana, Monday, May 28th, after a long illness.
Harlan Bennett of Markland and Miss Wilena Culbertson of Moorefield, were married Tuesday, May 22nd, at Madison.

Louise George and Herman L. Fox were united in marriage Monday evening at the Norwood Methodist Church, Cincinnati, by Reverend C.F. Brown.
H. F. Deming of Owenton, Kentucky, has leased the large store room in the I.O.O.F. building on Main Street and will open a large 5 and 10 cent store in the near future.
Lee Norvelle, director of theater at Bloomington, Indiana, has completed a dramatization of Edward Eggleston’s, “Hoosier School Master”, which he expects to present next spring. The Eggleston Club of Vevay has been issued a special invitation to attend.
John Porter died at his home near Fairview Sunday, May 26th, from an illness of paralysis and heart trouble.
Paul Robert Lock, 9-year-old son of John A. and Ethel Burroughs Lock, died Thursday after a brief illness of scarlet fever.
Mrs. Malinda Kinder, aged 79 years, 11 months, and 6 days, was taken by death at her home near Aberdeen Friday, May 24th, after a prolonged illness.
Cora Browning Lozier, aged 47 years, who recently resided in Vevay, died at her home in Warsaw, Kentucky, last week following an attack of ptomaine poisoning, which relatives stated had been received from a sandwich.
Betty Frances, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ballard, died Saturday, May 25th, after a brief illness of whooping cough.
80 YEARS AGO
A drop in temperature of 55 degrees in less than 24 hours caused Switzerland County people to dig out their heavy underwear and top coats. Early Sunday morning the temperature in Vevay was 90 degrees; early Monday morning 35 degrees were registered. Heavy frost was noticeable and all early crops are heavily damaged.
The Sunday transfer trips on the boats will commence at once and people wishing to board the steamers at Dam 39 may do so.

Paul Davis and Harry McGee, pilots flying the American Racing Record airplane, escaped serious injury when the propeller flew off and they crash landed their plane in a field near Moorefield.
Born, a daughter, Mary Frances, to William McNeeley and wife of Posey Township.
Born, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. John Blodgett.

Rain fell in Switzerland County 21 days out of the 31 in May. During the last two weeks in May it rained each day, the total precipitation for the month being 5.90 inches.
Owing to the rapidly rising river, an 80 foot strip of the coffer dam gave away suddenly at Dam 39 last Thursday night.
Ray Elder and Miss Sophia Day, both of Vevay, were married Sunday morning by Reverend Hammel at his residence here.
Rudolph Siebert has moved to Vevay from Greensburg and will open a shoe repair shop in the Knox Shoe Store.
An effort is being made to organize a baseball team in Vevay.
Everett Claghorn spent several days here with Claude Siefert, making the round trip from Indianapolis on his motorcycle.

The young son of Oliver Allen, formerly of Vevay, was killed in an accident in Vevay.
Married in Urbana, Illinois, Miss Maude McKenzie and Clarence L. Jackson, formerly of this county.
Dr. W. Smith is attending a meeting of health officers in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Isabel Miller gave a birthday party in honor of her son, the new county treasurer.
Mrs. Will S. McKay was elected President of the Ladies Aid at Lamb.
Three huskers from Moorefield and one from Bennington are moving around in the Parks Ridge area.

The boiler for the water works arrived Tuesday morning. It is large and heavy — it was all six horses could do to haul it from the river to the water works station.
Dr. D.W. Tague and son have opened a huckster store on Pike Street and will operate a huckster wagon.
Carter, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Rochat, died of diphtheria Saturday morning.
Guy Belch, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Belch, died in Vevay Saturday morning at the age of 6 years.
Mrs. Margaret Scott, wife of Robert Scott, died at the family residence near Moorefield Monday morning after an illness of tuberculosis.

The Masons have completed their handsome new building in Moorefield.
F. M. Charlton of Bennington was appointed Deputy Prosecutor of Jefferson County.
Reverend T. Warn Beagle baptized nine colored persons in the river here.
The young ladies of the Bennington church bought a beautiful clock to be placed behind the pulpit.
Mrs. Archie Shaw observed her 58th birthday at her home in Craig Township.
Died in Vevay May 30th, Mrs. Nancy Roberts, aged 75 years.
Died in Allensville May 27th, Joseph Culp, aged 86 years, a native of New York.
Died in Posey Township May 21st, Miss Phoebe Mead, aged 78 years.

Last week our city marshal, W.P. Dement, arrested two men for hitching their horses to fences in the city.
For the past two years our Market House has been used as an arsenal. Now that the war is over we suggest to our city council that it be suitably repaired and cleaned for the accommodation of butchers and hucksters.
We learn that the ladies of the Methodist Church contemplate giving a raspberry supper as soon as that fruit becomes ripe.
Notice: Miss P. LeClerc respectfully announces to the citizens of Vevay that she will open her school June 5th at the Seminary in this place, terms $1 to $1.50 per month.
