The planned sale of the Ogle Haus Inn to investors from the Indianapolis area has apparently fallen through, and the hotel is back on the market. The sale of the Ogle Haus, which was mandated by the Internal Revenue Service in a 1993 ruling, had been pending since December of last year.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jessica K. French, daughter of Sherry French of near Moorefield, recently reported for duty aboard the amphibious command ship USS Mount Whitney, the flagship of the second fleet. The ship is home ported in Norfolk, Virginia.
Switzerland County’s outstanding senior guard Lance Collier has signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana.
A brush fire last Friday afternoon charred nearly 10 acres of property and injured a volunteer fireman. Moorefield volunteer fireman Ron Downing was overcome by heat exhaustion while fighting the fire, which occurred at about noon on the Cedar Branch Farm on Martin Road just north of Long run up Highway 129. the farm is owned by a cooperative association of hunters, according to Moorefield fire chief Terry Hall. Brush was being mowed when some of the dry weeds caught fire.

Earl Conner of route 1, Florence, has been appointed to fill the county council seat vacated by the death of Wilbur “Toots” Buchanan last month.
A plan to conduct a new study of the county’s current zoning requirements and to create a new comprehensive master plan for future construction growth is being met with resistance in the form of a petition against the proposal which is being circulated throughout the county.
Russell Weaver of Vevay was elected vice president of the Board for Milk Promotional Services of Indiana, Inc. (MPSI) at their annual meeting in Indianapolis. He has served on the board since it was chartered in 1985. He is also a director for Milk Marketing, Inc., a dairy cooperative.
20 YEARS AGO
The State of Indiana has received notification of the approval of $75,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund matching grant to the Switzerland County Park and Recreation Board. The grant will be used to develop Markland Dam Park, recently officially named, located on the Ohio river.
Swiss Villa Health Care Facility has a new administrator as of March 31st. She is Anita Craig, route 2, Vevay. Mrs. Craig has been employed at the facility since July, 1985, as a registered nurse and then as an administrator trainee.
Airman Clayton M. Ritch, son of Vernon K. and Joan Ritch of Vevay, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
Brian McSwain, son of Russell and Vera McSwain, Vevay, is a participant of the outdoor track team at Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana, this spring. Brian is a 1982 graduate of Switzerland County High School and is majoring in chemical engineering at Tri-State.

Ida Buchanan of Vevay has been named the 1976 winner of the Jane Award, the prize given annually to the most outstanding club woman in Switzerland County by the county’s Extension Homemakers organization.
Mrs. Marian J. Janes of Vevay and Mr. Vincent Janes of Aurora announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Julia Lee Janes, to Mr. E. Howard Hazeldean, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldric E. Hazeldean of Vevay. The wedding is planned for June 5th in the Switzerland Baptist Church at 8 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Kelly of Madison announce the engagement of their daughter, Kim Scudder, to Rick Curry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale V. Curry of near Moorefield. The bride-to-be was until recently a resident of the Fairview area. A June 4th wedding is planned at 7 o’clock in the evening at the Fairview United Methodist Church.
Former Switzerland County High School athlete Kenny Lock of Vevay is currently enjoying a successful season as a pitcher with the Hanover College baseball team. A sophomore, Lock is one of the team’s starting pitchers.
Mr. and Mrs. Amos Hastings, Center Square, announce the engagement of their daughter, Gay, to Russell Felch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Felch of Newport News, Virginia. A June wedding is planned.

Mr. and Mrs. Max DeFord of Indianapolis have announced the marriage of their daughter, Bonnie, to Herbert Whitham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Whitham of rural route 2, Rising Sun.
Four students from Switzerland County have been singled out for scholastic achievement by being named to dean’s list at Indiana University one or both of the last two semesters. They are Kay Hanna and Robert D. Jones, both of rural route 1, Florence; and Mrs. Linda Boyd and Judy Lueking, both of Vevay. All are Vevay High School graduates.
Adding to its growing collection of Switzerland County art works, Kappa Kappa Kappa Sorority has purchased an oil painting from Robert Manor. In keeping with Tri Kappa’s interest in culture and county talents, the local active chapter acquired the painting from Manor who is art teacher at Vevay High School and other county schools.

A baby daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. William McAllister at their home on route 2, Vevay, Wednesday morning, May 2nd. the little girl weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces, and has been named Sherry Sue.
Heavy construction equipment will begin operation at the new Markland Dam this week, officials of the Dravo Company have announced. Resident superintendent of construction on the Kentucky side of the existing dam, Mr. Roy Switzer, told this newspaper that construction of the cofferdam and some excavation will begin next week.
Sale of the Vevay Reveille-Enterprise and the Switzerland Democrat was made public today when it was announced that James K. Danglade sold the business to his son, John P. Danglade. The former owner has been in ill health recently and is presently convalescing at his home here.
Coach John Collier of Vevay High School has signed a contract with Brookville School, it was learned this week. Collier will take over the coaching position at that school shortly after classes terminate here, assuming his new job in time to direct the Brookville summer program of sports.

Miss Dorothy Hickman and Delbert Stewart were married Saturday evening, April 27th, in the Long Run Baptist Church by Reverend Latrell Stanfield.
At a special meeting held Tuesday night the Town Board of Vevay voted to adopt daylight saving time and the clocks will be set ahead one hour at midnight Saturday, May 4th.
Born Sunday, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Downey of Indianapolis.

Effective next week Paul Lamkin, deputy sheriff, will become the manager of the Sullivan Store on Ferry Street to succeed Eugene Broadwell, who has already taken up his duties as Welfare Director of Switzerland County.
Mrs. Walter Ricketts of Tapps Ridge had a narrow escape from death Monday when a coal oil heater in a brooder house exploded just as she opened the door of the building to enter it. She was knocked to the ground and was burned about the face and arms.
The steamer Plymouth grounded a barge of scrap iron on Big Bone Island last week.

Misses Pauline Detraz and Elizabeth Bondurant who have been attending Oxford (Ohio) College are spending spring vacations at their homes here.
Miss Lucy Lamson of Vevay and Burney Lehman of Westport, Indiana, have announced their marriage, which was solemnized during the holidays at Falmouth, Kentucky.
A Ford roadster belonging to Ross Hatch was stolen from his garage at the home of Dewey Mier near Bennington one night last week. At the same time a car belonging to Mr. Mier was stripped.
Roy Detraz of Vevay and Miss Virginia Smith of Miami, Florida, were married in the latter city on April 27th.
Born April 30th, a daughter Marjorie Aileen to Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Stewart of Patriot.
Bill Heady last week added an immense gray eagle to his rapidly increasing menagerie. The eagle was captured in Posey Township by a farmer named Chase and measures 10 feet and 6 inches from tip to tip. Bill now has on exhibit a cage of guinea pigs, a few goats and the eagle. He plans to release the eagle on next Jockey Day.

Born April 19th, a son to Howard Sedam and wife of East Enterprise.

The steamer Indiana, one of the oldest craft in the Cincinnati-Louisville trade, burned to the water’s edge Monday while at the Cincinnati landing.
Thomas Cooper, 69, a veteran of the Civil War died April 29th at his home near Center Square.
W. H. Lyons of Vevay has been reelected truant officer.
Switzerland County is rapidly taking rank as one of the foremost dairying counties in the state because of the fact that nearly every farmer is producing some cream for market.
A. J. Porter has accepted a position with the Clay Products Company in Indianapolis.

Beecher Weaver, 15-year-old son of Jeff Weaver of near Bennington, received painful injuries on his face when he was kicked by a horse.
Spring lambs are bringing the top price of 12 1/2 cents per pound.
Ben Banta, who is attending normal school in Danville, Indiana, is ill at his home with measles.
Perry K. Cotton and E. F. Bellamy, both of the Moorefield community, are critically ill. Dr. C. C. Cotton of Elwood, Indiana, and Lewis F. Bellamy of Amethyst, Colorado were summoned home to the bedside of their fathers.
Munce Graham and son Avery went to Cincinnati Monday to purchase a soda fountain for their restaurant.
A daughter was born April 5th to Mr. and Mrs. Lucian Koons of Goose Creek.

The home of Dave Thompson and family at Moorefield was destroyed by fire Thursday. The property was owned by William Hulley.
A daughter was born April 25th to Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Buchanan of Bethel Ridge.
The shoe store of O.S. Clendenning is for sale. Mr. Clendenning has leased the Delaney Hotel which he will manage.
At the election in York Township on the road question a majority of 24 votes in favor of building the roads was cast. The amount voted for the roads is $21,498.80.

The latest fad is to hang a clothes brush outside the front door, on the veranda, to be used before entering the house. this is a most sensible fashion as ladies cannot walk on the streets without getting dust on their clothes and shoes and it is very embarrassing to enter a parlor knowing you are carrying dust in on the fine carpets. This style will be introduced in Vevay by several ladies this summer, so when you see a clothes brush at the entrance of a house, don’t think the neat housekeeper has neglected to take her dusting brush in, but if you think you are very dusty you can use it before entering.

Dr. T. M. Danglade and family who have been in California returned from California last Saturday. Dr. Danglade is still in poor health.
The toll collected at the gate near Vevay, on the Vevay, Mount Sterling, Versailles Turnpike during the month of April was $118.81.
Cook’s Circus will visit Vevay next Tuesday. Carpeted seats for women and children.
Bruce Lamson, who resides in Craig Township, has left at our office twigs from 25 different kinds of fruit trees in his orchard.
Robert A. Knox is having a first class stone sidewalk built along the entire front of his premises.

Died in Cotton Township, Hilliard Pittman, 22, of self-inflicted shotgun wounds.

150 YEARS AGO
Married April 20th by Reverend H. Wason, Miss Louise Z. Grisard, daughter of Captain F. L. Grisard of Vevay to Frederick L. Dubach of Madison.
Last Sunday as Richard Gaines was going to his home near Vevay he was knocked down on the highway and robbed. He was severely injured.
On April 15th we had a snow storm and it is now believed that the peaches, cherries and strawberries are killed.
George Teats is now an associate in the new firm of Teats and Schenck.
