Switzerland County’s oldest citizen celebrates yet another birthday today (Thursday), as Isabel Sullivan turns 104 years old.
Jennifer Brindley was crowned Homecoming Queen and Patrick Monjar was crowned Homecoming King at halftime festivities of the ball game Friday evening between Switzerland County and Rising Sun in an ORVC basketball clash.
Amanda Althoff, has been recognized at Hanover College for her academic accomplishments. She was named to the Dean’s List for the fall term. She is one of six winners of the Michael E. Garber Scholarship, named in honor of the former publisher of The Madison Courier. She is a sophomore at Hanover and is the daughter of Carl and Sandra Althoff of near Fairview.
Leroy Brammer, who operates North Bend Farms near Patriot, has retired from the Indiana Soybean Development Council after serving a three-year term. A third-generation farmer, Leroy Brammer has become one of the leaders in the agriculture community here in Switzerland County. He and wife Deanna have operated North Bend Farms for 28 years.
The Brammers grow both soybeans and corn on the 2,400 acre farm, as well as raising brood cows and 600 sows in a farrow-to-finish operation.

Joelle Roberts was crowned Homecoming Queen last Friday night between the jayvee and varsity basketball games against Rising Sun.
Tony Coffey of Vevay has been elected by the County Precinct Committeemen to succeed Claude Roland on the Town Board of Vevay. Roland resigned recently for personal reasons. He joins Kenny Craig and Jerry Heath on the board.
Mother Nature gave Switzerland County the cold shoulder during the past week, as temperatures plummeted below zero and much of the county was paralyzed by the icy roads and the bellowing winds.
“Pacers Number 1 Fan,” that’s Buck White of Vevay. Before the start of the varsity Homecoming game last Friday evening, Buck was presented a short displaying just that by the Switzerland County Athletic Boosters and the members of the basketball team.

A federal grand jury in Indianapolis Monday indicted former Vevay resident Raymond McClellan for armed bank robbery. Mr. McClellan is charged with the January 17th hold-up of the East Enterprise State Bank.
Vevay’s American Legion basketball team will play host to a month-long basketball tourney during February, part of the statewide Legion championship tournament.
Indiana dairy farmers are going to help make the sands of Arab lands richer — if not sweeter. Liquid cow manure, which Hoosier dairy farmers use to enrich their fields, is being bought for two Saudi Arabia shiekdoms at 5 to 10 cents a gallon.
Darryl Jones returned this week to his Army base in Fort Eustis, Virginia after spending a three-week leave from the service with his family in Vevay. His is the son of Mrs. Jacqueline Jones, of Pike Street, Vevay.
Phyllis Truitt of Vevay has been named customer services manager by the Grote Manufacturing Company for its Madison plant, Grote officials announced this week. Mrs. Truitt and her husband, Leslie, reside with their two sons in Vevay. She’s been with Grote since 1967.
Wilbur (Todd) and Mary Fredenburgh, of Florence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary February 7th, and a family dinner in honor of that occasion will be held Sunday, February 2nd.

Joining the staff of Vevay Newspapers, Inc., this week is Mrs. Tanya Curry of route 2, Dillsboro, who will head the advertising department of The Vevay Reveille-Enterprise and The Switzerland Democrat.
Floyd Lowe of Lowe’s Pellets and Grain, Inc., of Greensburg, has purchased East Enterprise Feed Mill from former owner Warren Works and has assumed management of the state road 250 mill.
Thomas W. Gullion and Robert W. Tinker, both of route 1, Bennington, have been elected president and vice-president respectively of Switzerland County National Farmers Organization for 1970.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lohide of route 2, Vevay, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Georgia Lee, to Gregory White, grandson of Mrs. Raymond Lester of 310 E. Pike Street, Vevay.
Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Tharp of Vevay have announced the engagement of their daughter, Elizabeth Ann, to Lary D. Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis D. Jones of Flemingsburg, Kentucky.
Switzerland County sang Happy Birthday this week to two of its oldest lady citizens as they celebrated their 94th and 95th birthdays. Mrs. Amy Detraz reached her 95th birthday last Thursday, and Saturday was the 94th anniversary of Mrs. Mabel Hutcherson’s birth. They live a block apart in Vevay’s downtown business district.

Lee Gregory, Posey Township farmer, lost a valuable yearling heifer last week when the young cow broke through a covering of ice on a pond and drowned.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stevens of Center Square have sold their farm there to the Ascherman brothers of Williamstown, Kentucky, and Versailles. It is reported that the new owners expect to develop the property into a modern dairy farm.
Fletcher Hufford of Patriot was elected chairman of the County Extension committee at the annual meeting January 18th.
Vevay’s Warriors, led by the 28 points scoring of senior Jim Strausbaugh, rolled over North Dearborn 58-56 last night at Vevay high School gym.
The East Enterprise Fire Department was called to the home of William Booth near Allensville Friday morning. His tractor had ignited and was burning on the inside of his barn. Quick action of the fire department extinguished the flames, confining the damage to the tractor only.

Robert Lockeridge achieved some kind of a January record at his home near Markland when he killed a garter snake 26 inches long Wednesday.
A baby son weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces was born January 18th, to Mr. and Mrs. Philip Moore of Rushville (nee Elaine Shadday) formerly of Vevay. He has been named Mark Lewis.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gregory of Patriot are parents of a 6 pound, 10 and one-half ounce baby girl born January 11th, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. She has been named Brenda Carol.
Mrs. Olive Casey Lewis, former resident of Vevay, was married January 19th at her home near Moores Hill to Robert Johnson of Aurora.
Louis Gex, 63, familiarly known as “Had” , a prominent farmer living near Ghent, Kentucky, but well known in Vevay, suffocated in his smoke house Sunday night after he was apparently knocked unconscious when a ladder broke under him.
Mr. and Mrs. John Brindley, formerly of this county, but now living in Adams, are parents of a baby daughter born January 18th. She weighed 5 pounds, 9 and one-half ounces and has been named Verda Lee.
Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Conner of Vevay announce the birth of a baby daughter, Deborah Lee, who was born at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison January 19th. She weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces. Mrs. Conner was Miss Barbara Seavers before her marriage.

Continued cold for the past several days has finally blocked the Ohio River with ice from Louisville to Sugar Creek, Kentucky, a distance of 80.7 miles.
75 YEARS AGO
Death entered a Vevay home Friday night and within one hour took Mr. and Mrs. William Rook. At six, Mrs. Rook, 71, died of a heart attack. At 7 o’clock, Mr. Rook, 82, who had been in critical condition for a week, passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Rook had been married for over 50 years.
Mrs. Charles Ricketts of Markland has accepted the invitation of the United States Government, which has been extended to Gold Star Mothers, to visit the graves of their soldier sons in France. Uly G. Ricketts was reported missing in action and the exact location of his grave is not known.
Miss Mabel Bennett and Carl Edwin Coy of Florence were married January 18th, by the reverend F.W. Hammel.
Miss Ellogene Scudder and Leland Knaus were married Sunday by the Rev. C.J. Casey in Vevay.
Stanley Andrew, who won the Switzerland County corn club contest last year won a blue ribbon on a 10 ear exhibit at the state corn show.
An eight pound girl was born Sunday to Mr. and Mrs. Neally Scudder of Jacksonville.
Miss Anne Seymour, leading lady in the musical comedy “A Night in Venice”, Miss Grace Bowman and John Byam, of the same company were guests of George McKay Thursday and Friday. He accompanied them to New York for rehearsals as accompanist.
Miss Grace Wiley and Stanley Patterson of Florence were married in Rising Sun last week by the Reverend Donald McLean.
Kibbe Bliss, who was badly injured in a recent automobile accident, has been returned to his home in Quercus Grove.

Sleighs, bobsleds, and skates came into their own this week while the county was in the grip of an ice glare. Rain flooded roads and fields, which froze, making it impossible to drive automobiles. Telephone lines were damaged by the ice and trees were broken by its weight.
Tobacco continues to sell for high prices bringing as high as 75 cents to $1.25 per pound.
Supt. A.H. Wegener has been informed that a surplus fund of the YMCA has been apportioned to the 92 counties and that Switzerland County is to receive $198.
Miss Millicent Clements and Maurice Briggs were married Sunday at the home of the Rev. W.C. Marshall in Vevay.
E.W. Shaw has sold his store at Braytown to Edgar Detraz and Charles Hollingsworth. Mr. Shaw and family will go to California for their little boy’s help.
Chris Adams of Craig Township lost a cow last week when it fell on the ice breaking its back and a leg.
William Pickett fell on the ice this week and broke a rib. Frank Dupraz also fell and cut a deep gash in his head.
There are many cases of measles here.

On Friday afternoon, February 4th, the senior class of Vevay High School will present the play, “The Merchant of Venice”, in the school rooms.
Skunk hunting is quite an industry around here now.

Charles Norisez one week ago Friday night rode to town and hitched his horse on Market Square. When he went to go home the horse had disappeared and not finding it at home, he had reason to believe it was stolen. Sunday, the horse returned home from up the pike. It was probably rode away by someone too lazy to walk.
Hiram Jennings has probably lost the sight of his left eye. Monday while he and Volney Peelman were rowing a skiff up the river they ran against a limb of a tree which struck Mr. Jennings in the eye.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ab Hon of Craig Township, a son.
Married at the parsonage of the Catholic Church in Vevay Sunday, January 19th, by the Revered Father Wiederin, Benjamin W. Simmons and Miss Josie E. Jockell.

Miss Sarah Moore of Allensville has become something of a heroine at Western College in Oxford, Ohio. Last week when the college burned she made a rope of bed clothing and curtains and after throwing her trunk out of a window climbed down her ladder hand over hand, from the fifth story to the ground.
The Reverend John Finley Crowe, 73, founder of Hanover College died January 17th.
