Brandi Marie Scudder and Michael Steven Bear have announced their engagement and approaching marriage. The couple will be married on Saturday, October 18th, at the Rising Sun Baptist Church.
The Switzerland County community and students of Switzerland County High School were saddened late last week at the passing of student Dillon Henry. The 16-year old was a junior at Switzerland County High School, and was involved in a four-wheeler accident on Wednesday evening on Fairview Road.
Lauren Lynn Smith was born on Friday, July 11th, 2008. She is the daughter of Corey and Angie Smith of Florence.
Austin David Hodge was born on Monday, June 30th, 2008. He is the son of Keith Hodge and Janelle Ballard of Patriot.
Kyle Green and Rachel Gurley will represent Switzerland County High School in this years Farmer’s Fair King and Queen contest.

The Switzerland County Chamber of Commerce welcomed Jerry Carroll to Vevay Tuesday evening, and more than 100 people showed up to hear this plans for his new motorsport race track that is being built in nearby Sparta, Kentucky, in Gallatin County.
John Michael “Mickey” Lamson, one of Vevay High School’s outstanding athletes, will be inducted into the Hanover College Athletic Hall of Fame tomorrow (Friday) night. Mickey Lamson died in December of 1970, and was nominated for induction in the Hall of Fame by classmate and friend Jerry McKenzie. He is the son of Harry and Lucille “Sis” Lamson of Market Street in Vevay.
The Community Foundation of Switzerland County has received a grant of $800,000 from the Lilly Endowment in Indianapolis to assist in a variety of projects and programs in the county. The foundation will use the funds to help purchase computer equipment, match state and federal funds to assist with grant projects, upgrade parks and buildings, and purchase emergency equipment.
A retirement party was given in honor of Donnie L. Leap on Wednesday, September 16th. He had worked for the Army Corps of Engineers at the Markland Dam for 31 years.
Rebecca J. Meyers and Gregory W. Curlin, both of near Vevay, have announced their engagement and approaching marriage. She is the daughter of Jane Myers of Logansport and the late Robert Myers. He is the son of Mary Lou Curlin of Tapps Ridge Road and the late Wilbur Curlin. They will be married Saturday, October 24th, at the Aberdeen United Methodist Church.

Melinda Miller, daughter of Ramona Miller of Allensville, recently received the Maurice and Rose Johnson Scholarship at Franklin College’s fall honors program.
Indiana State Police investigator Bruce Williams, a resident of Switzerland County, has been promoted to sergeant by Indiana State Police Superintendent Lloyd Jennings.
Ryan Redmon, a 1992 graduate of Switzerland County High School, will be performing in a University of Indianapolis production during the next two weekends.
Markland Locks has been honored with an award for 75 years of weather observation and reporting. The award was made by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It was presented to lockmaster Joe Roberts of Vevay by Pete Telez of the U.S. Weather Bureau of Louisville.

It’s that time of year again, when the tiny village of Bennington readies for its 15th annual homecoming on Saturday, October 8th. Things will begin happening around 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day until sundown. The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. followed by the naming of the Mayor and Ms. Bennington.
Deputy R. Wayne Browning of the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department and Patrolman Tom McKay of the Rising Sun Police Department were among the 82 officers who graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy on Friday, September 23rd.
Katee Hoskins, a sophomore at Switzerland County High School, has been selected to sing with the Indiana All-State Choir this fall. She is the daughter of Denise and Jerry Hoskins of East Enterprise. Katee, an alto, was one of 16 students chosen out of 60 who competed in the district tryouts.

For a second time within five months, the town of Vevay is facing a medical crisis in which it may, for the first time in its modern history, find itself without a practicing physician. Dr. Richard L. Stump, who moved into Vevay Clinic only the past June — 3 1/2 months ago — has indicated he will close out his local office Friday morning. He will return to his former practice in Muncie.
Mike Archer and Cherri Bright won trophies on contest points Sunday for their performances this summer during Switzerland County Saddle Club’s youth division horse shows.
Benham brothers’ outstanding heavyweight team of pulling horses continued its winning way Saturday night by capturing the Indiana state championship pull in Fairview at Switzerland County Saddle Club grounds.
Miss Kathleen Cord will be installed as worthy advisor of the local Rainbow Girls Assembly at 7 p.m. Friday in Vevay’s Masonic Hall.
Switzerland County senior Errol Judy crossed the finish line a few steps ahead of Madison’s Dean Ford in Tuesday’s cross country meet in Madison. Judy set a fast pace to enable Ford to break the Madison High School record set in 1965 by Gary Denning — also paced by Judy. Judy’s winning time was 10:45.5. Ford was clocked in 10:25. Switzerland County won the meet 21.36.

The hydro-electric power plant at Markland was virtually assured this week when the Federal Power Commission announced that the Public Service Company of Indiana had made formal application for a license to build the generating station at the Indiana end of the new high-level dam.
The Market Square in Vevay will be turned into a parking lot for the convenience of motorists and shoppers in the community, if final plans are approved by the Vevay Town Board. At a recent meeting the Board gave a tentative okay to the project.
The Vevay Jaycee Halloween Parade, held each year for the children of this community, will be featured by marching bands, selection of a Queen, and awards for floats and costumes, getting underway Halloween night, October 31st.
Cheerleaders at Vevay High School selected last week by the student body are Carol Jean Merz, Mary Florence Patterson, Mary Inez Lockwood, and Mary Kay Duvall. The four girls were chosen from among eight candidates, after tryouts.

A 7 pound, 11 ounce son, Michael, was born September 24th to Mr. and Mrs. Tom O’Connor Jr., at Cherry Point, North Carolina. Mrs. O’Connor was formerly Miss Helen Moreillon of Fairview.
Mrs. O. H. McNary has been appointed substitute mail clerk at the local post office to succeed Mrs. Dilver Pangburn.
In another column of this newspaper is the announcement of the opening here of a Women’s Exchange by Mrs. E. P. Downey, in the front room of Amy’s Beauty Shop on Main Street. Mrs. Downey plans to sell articles brought in to her by individuals on a commission basis.
A new three-room modern building of concrete block construction is to be built soon at Ghent, Kentucky for colored children. At present classes are being held in the Pride of Ghent Lodge building.
Harold Chittenden of Vevay, whose hobby for many years has been radio, has received his license as a “ham” operator of a short wave set which he has installed in the basement of his home. His call letters are W9FFE. It is a fascinating hobby that requires study and technical skill and it is believed that he is the first person in Switzerland County to hold an amateur license.

Wilfred Breeck, 22, of Lamb, has been issued papers as a First Class River Pilot for the 350 mile run from Madison to Beattyville, Kentucky.
Harris B. Webber has donated his valuable collection of firearms to the Pioneer Memorial State Park at Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The gift was made in memory of his wife Lulu Griffith Webber.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence O’Neal of Braytown a son, Charles C.
A new switchboard has been installed in the new building of the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company in East Enterprise.

Born to Fred Elston and wife on September 25th, a fine son, Donald Leon.
Oliver Gridley has installed an all electric Atwater Kent radio. This is the first all-electric radio that has been sold in Vevay.
A son, William Robert, was born last Thursday to Mr. and Mrs. Blanton Hatton.
A daughter, Mildred, was born last week to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hazeldean.
100 YEARS AGO
On Monday all churches, schools, places of amusement were ordered closed and all public meetings were banned by order of Dr. L. H. Bear, health officer, because of the epidemic of Spanish influenza. Dr. Bear acted on orders from Dr. J. N. Hurty, Secretary of the State Board of Health.
Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Stepleton of near Fairview received a telegram Thursday night informing them that their son William had drowned that afternoon when he slipped from the docks at West Point, New York where he was serving as a U.S. Army instructor in the Army Service Corps. The young man had been in the Army for 24 years. Mr. Stepleton and his four sons, William, Amie, Bert and Harry have served a combined total of 64 years in military service. The father is a veteran of the Civil War. Amie, veteran of the Spanish-American War, is at West Point with his brother and accompanied the body of his brother home. Bert is in the Marine Corps at New Orleans, Louisiana. Harry is in his fourth year of service at Camp Custer, Michigan.
Hiram Ogle, a former Switzerland County man now living in New York City, has written this newspaper that he had just visited Howard Burton at Naval Hospital there. The young man, first reported killed in action in France, was wounded in the battle of Chateau Thierry, and was sent back to the U.S.
The little four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Van Brandon of near Pleasant is ill with infantile paralysis and the family is under quarantine.
Mrs. Corrine Reger of New Castle has come to spend the winter with her mother, Mrs. George Buchanan while her husband is in service.

Because of the long drought there is a water famine which in some places is becoming serious.
The farmers are reporting quail as being plentiful.
The Cincinnati Reds of the National League have been booked for a game of ball to be played in Vevay next Wednesday afternoon. This is the only time that a National League team has ever played in Switzerland County.
The shooting gallery between the Johnson and Knox stores did a rushing business Saturday.
Howard Allen and wife are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby girl.
The river is but three feet deep at this place and the chute below town is becoming almost impassable for steamboats.
An automobile frightened the express wagon horses last Thursday causing them to run away. The team ran into Becht’s cracker jack stand slightly damaging it. Dow, the tailor jumped into the back of the wagon, and secured the lines, and finally managed to stop the team.
While hauling coal from Aurora George Weaver of Bascom fell from his wagon receiving injuries from which he later died.

Dan Tower residing in Jefferson County has lost 30 hogs by cholera.
Oliver and Brune Cole have opened a restaurant opposite the courthouse on Main Street.

Perry James has traded his house in Vevay to Jerry Plew for his farm near Markland.
W. D. Stark of Aurora will commence teaching a class in penmanship in Vevay next Monday.
Amount of toll collected during the month of September at the gate near Vevay on the Vevay, Mount Sterling and Versailles turnpike, $242.47.

A “Fillmore and Friends” of the Union Rally will be held at Enterprise Saturday with a basket dinner at noon. Delegations from each community in the county will parade and each Marshal should be designated by a scarf. Persons having baskets of provisions for the meeting are asked to leave them at William Price’s shop and they will be conveyed there.
The partnership of Jesse Teats and J. P. Schenck has been dissolved and Mr. Teats has purchased the entire stock in their store.
