The Switzerland County 4-H Fair kicked off last Saturday night with the annual Fair Queen pageant, and Sydney Pike of near Fairview was crowned as the 2007 winner from the field of nine contestants.
The Switzerland County School Board is expected to name Wilma Swango as the new corporation treasurer at a special meeting on Monday, July 9th. She previously served as treasurer from 1989 until 2002.
Carlee Ann Boggs was born on Monday March 26, at Dearborn County Hospital. She is the daughter of Mark and LeeAnn Boggs of Vevay.
Pfc. Kaleb R. Adams of Vevay graduated basic training from the United States Marine Corps, Parris, Island, South Carolina, on April 27th as a qualified Sharp Shooter and achieved 1st Class Personal Fitness Training score of 261.

Larry Haggard will be representing Switzerland County early next month in the state finals of the Hoosier State Games in Indianapolis. He advanced to the finals by winning the junior high age division of the regional competition in both the shot put and the discus last weekend in Corydon.
Members of the Switzerland County FFA chapter, which has been earning state wide recognition the past few years, continued their award winning ways at last week’s state convention. The local organization was honored as the 12th best FFA chapter in Indiana, and many members earned high state honors.
Franklin College has announced its dean’s list of the spring semester and it includes three students from Switzerland County. They are Jessica Lee Browning, Gina Marie Simon and Serenedy Dawn Smith.
Chris Grauel of the Crosley Fish and Wildlife Area in North Vernon has announced the opening date of the new state area on the Switzerland/Jefferson County line. The Splinter Ridge Fish and Wildlife Area - which lies on 2,400 acres on the county line – will be officially opened to the public Friday, August 15th.

Christy Lynn McKay, daughter of Virgil and Judy McKay of Indianapolis married Hector James Muzquiz May 2nd at the Ogle Haus Inn in Vevay.
Darrin Wayne Cole of Vevay received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky May 9th.
Robert and Lorraine Lueking of Vevay recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by traveling to Hawaii. They visited the islands of Oahu and Maui, and the largest island of Hawaii. They were accompanied by Lorraine’s sister, Dorothy Hannah of Madison; their daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Richard Herren of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and their son, Don Lueking and his daughters, Lisa and Stacy, all of Houghton, Michigan.

Loren Graham, Vevay, has been named Indiana State Service Officer of the Year, 186-1987, for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received the award during the State Convention held in Indianapolis June 18th-21st.
James and Mary Jane Boulton of Madison will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, July 12th, at the United Methodist Church in Vevay. A reception will be held from 2-4 p.m.
Paul Ogle was honored with a western barbecue in celebration of his 80th birthday. Mr. Ogles is a native of Switzerland County and has been very active in helping the community grow.
Marie Beard of Vevay was honored with a dinner Friday, June 26th, in honor of her retirement from the U.S. Shoe Corporation in Vevay. She joined the company March 1st, 1954. She worked as an inspector checking shoes before they are boxed.
40 YEARS AGO
They came from as far away as Massachusetts and Mississippi. Some came for the sport of it. Others came to enjoy it as a hobby. Some came with their eyes on the $500 top prize money, a shiny first place trophy and quite a bit of prestige. Benham Brothers’ team of horses from Osgood took first place in the annual horse pull in Vevay that drew 52 teams and hundreds of fans Saturday night.
Mary Jane Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clair Smith, of near Pleasant, and Thomas Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rogers, route 1, Vevay, were married Saturday afternoon in an outdoor ceremony performed at the home of the bride’s parents.

Walter E. “Jim” Gaudin, 74, of route 3, Vevay, was buried in Vevay Cemetery Sunday following his death Friday at Kings Daughter’s Hospital in Madison. In ill health the past three years. Mr. Gaudin was a retired proprietor of Gaudin’s Hardware Store, former operator of a lumber yard, and in early life he operated a clothing store in Vevay.
Richard Roland of Vevay will be traveling South America with seven other boys, four girls, and four adult advisors, all from southern Indiana. Rick’s travels will in effect set a precedent, for his is the first group from any district within the boundaries of this annual Methodist conference area to participate in such a plan. They will be converting a parsonage into Sunday School rooms and clearing nearby land for playground facilities.
Army Private Roger D. Brindley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Brindley of route 2, Vevay, is currently engaged in a four-week sentry dog-handling course in Okinawa. Upon completion of the course, Brindley will be stationed in Vietnam to complete his overseas tour of duty.
Miss Deborah Ann Auxier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Auxier of East Enterprise, has entered Spencerian College in Louisville, where she is taking an executive secretary course. Miss Auxier is a 1967 graduate of Vevay High School.

The engagement of Miss Betty Francis Bailey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Bailey of Patriot to Mr. Herbert Oesterle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Oesterle of Palatine, Illinois, has been announced. The wedding is planned for August 10th.
Meredith Hysell will be installed as Commander of the Edwin C. Danner Post of American Legion in Vevay at a future meeting.
Julian Lamson, veteran Vevay business man, sustained two broken ribs, bruised leg and head lacerations Friday evening when he was struck by an automobile.
A son was born June 19th at Cedarville, Indiana to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Noble. He weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces, and has been named Keith Douglas.
The marriage of the former Mrs. Lauretta Baatz to Mr. Clyde Borgman of Batesville route one, has been announced. The wedding took place February 14th in Vevay where Reverend H. G. Ramsey performed the ceremony.

On Monday evening, June 23rd, Miss Leola May Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hall of route 2, Madison, was united in marriage to Ray Spurgeon, son of Mr. and Mrs. King B. Spurgeon of near Freetown in Jackson County.
Vevay relatives have received announcement of the birth of a baby daughter June 18th to Mr. and Mrs. George Rix (nee Pauline Broadwell) of Dayton, Ohio. The young lady has been named Nelle Kae.
W.S. Welch, 87, of Bennington suffered a stroke of paralysis Thursday at his home and his condition has been critical since that time.
Edgar Scudder and Miss Thelma Bosaw, both of Switzerland County, were united in marriage at the home of Reverend L.S. Courtney Thursday, June 19th.
Harold Chittenden was notified Monday by an insurance company that an automobile answering to the description of his new 1947 Plymouth which was recently stolen from a Cincinnati street, had been located in Richmond, Virginia.
Miss Peggy Carnine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Raymond Carnine of Cincinnati, formerly of Vevay, is a patient in Bethesda Hospital in that city where she underwent an emergency appendectomy Monday night.
The Vevay friends of Melvin Lostutter, former Vevay resident and author of the novel, “High Fever,” will be interested to learn that he received his Master’s Degree in Literature at the recent commencement exercises of Indiana University.
The proprietors of the Sisters Shop, Miss Beatrice Babcock and Mrs. Helen Kirby, are moving their store from Pike Street to Main Street. It will be located int he room vacated by the draft board which is now owned by Clyde Norisez of Madison, formerly owned by the late Mrs. Cordie Wiseman.
James R. Landry, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James Bladen of Vevay abed son of Mrs. Leona Sullivan of Madison, was on of eight boys from that city who recently enlisted in the U.S. Army. Landry emerged with the distinction of having passed the Army I.Q. test with the highest rating of any boy who had gone throughout the Fort in two years.
Mrs. Sam Rose in confined by illness to her home near Fairview after suffering a heart attack on the street here in Vevay Saturday.

Richard, four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wolf of near Pleasant, was painfully bitten on the foot by a rat Saturday night while he was asleep.
Enos Osterman, Jr., was painfully injured last Thursday afternoon when hit bay car driven by Frank Romans near Indian Creek on the Mount Sterling-Bennington road.
Mode Asbury was painfully injured Wednesday morning when he was thrown from a hay rake at his farm near Moorefield.
Miss Virginia Stewart, daughter of Mrs. Vernice Stewart of Vevay, has been awarded a State Tri Kappa scholarship for this year, according to a recent announcement made by the organization.
Arlie Ferguson and Jean Smith, both of Jefferson County, were married by the Reverend F. E. Hammel here Saturday.

A surprise dinner was given Thaddeus B. Ryan, Sunday in honor of his 75th birthday which came Monday, June 27th. There were 44 relatives present.
The body of a newborn baby boy was found on the river shore three miles east of Florence last Thursday morning by Ed Taylor, fisherman. Coroner Ray Morrison was notified and announced a verdict of death from unknown causes.
Detraz Brothers have begun the work of remodeling the American Legion building on Pike Street to conform with requirements of the postal department.
Miss Anna A. Backus of Madison and Elbert B. Gray of Vevay were united in marriage last Thursday night by Father Bilger at St. Mary’s parish house.
100 YEARS AGO
A new Maxwell touring car owned and driven by Will G. Klein, Jr., of this city, was badly damaged by fire last Sunday morning on the river road near Florence.
Cyrus A. Brown, 80 years of age, and for 20 years of his life a trustee on the Alameda (California) School Board, passed quietly away early this morning at his home on 2250 San Jose Avenue.
If she lives until next Tuesday, July 3rd, Mrs. Mary Rous, residing at the home of her son-in-law, Benjamin N. Davis, near Fairview, will be 100 years old. She is the oldest person in Switzerland County and probably in southeastern Indiana. With possibly one exception she is the only person in the county to have reached this age in the last two decades, if such a thing has ever happened before. It is understood that she is he oldest woman on the pension rolls at Washington, D.C.

Engineer Waldenmaier of the city light and water plant informs us that, barring accidents, the new plant will be complete and ready to run next week.
Mr. and Mrs. E.B.L. Ford of Allensville celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary, June 21st.
Miss Clara Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Allen of Vevay and Burton Dodd of St. Joseph, Missouri, were married Wednesday evening at the M. E. parsonage. They left immediately after the ceremony for their new home in St. Joseph.
G. Moody Dodd of near Center Square and Mrs. Emma Craig of near Ghent were married Wednesday at the Vevay Baptist parsonage.

The steamer T. D. Dale has been purchased by J.W. Thomas and W. H. Towers of Madison. She will continue to make daily trips between Madison and Patriot on her usual times.
Last Saturday night a telegram was received at Vevay stating that Professor John W. Crandell had been accidentally killed on the railroad near Shell Lake, Wisconsin. The remains were brought to the home of his parents near Moorefield.
Clarence Elmer Hart of Moorefield has graduated from DePauw University in classical course with a B.A. degree.
Will Campbell and Miss Cora Brown were married June 26th at the home of the Reverend J.B. Morrison at Sugar Branch.

Dallas F. Banta of Craig Township and Miss Sallie Taylor of Madison were married in Madison last week.
Miss Dora Waldo has arrived home from Central Conservatory of Music at Columbus where she has been attending during the past year.
A new brick school house 26×40 has just been built in the Lamson neighborhood in Craig Township, Thomas Slater of Vevay was the contractor and builder.

Alfred Stow has resigned the office of health Officer and E.A. Dumont has been appointed to fill the vacancy.
Josiah Orem and Miss Lydia E. Blodgett, both of this county, were married by John Kern Esquire, on June 23rd.
Joseph Kaufman has moved his clothing store to the room formerly occupied by Hall & Lewis on Main Street.

The “army worm” is reported to be doing considerable damage to wheat in some fields in this region.
S.E. and J.K. Pleasants, general dealers in dry goods, groceries, etc, on Main Street have recently built and addition to their store.
