An announcement was made on the steps of the Switzerland County Courthouse on Friday afternoon that Vevay is one of three communities from across the state that will receive a grant of up to $350,000 as part of a new rural development plan.
Switzerland County Elementary School students Hailee Lay and Tylor Thomas are two of 10 overall winners in a contest that the Cincinnati Reds sponsored to name the Red’s new kids club. Both students will be honored on the field at Sunday’s game.

Switzerland County FFA member Brian Works is one of four finalist for the honor of being named Indiana’s Star Farmer for this year. It is the first time in history that a Switzerland County FFA member has earned such an honor. Greg Curlin is the FFA Advisor.
Members of the Valley Achievers 4-H celebrated after winning the county’s ‘Share The Fun’ competition last Friday night. The club performed an original skit entitled, “We’re Off to See the King.” They will now compete at the district competition next Friday night in Columbus for the chance to advance to the state show held at Purdue University.
Bill and Roberta Owings will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, May 17th, with an open house at Brushy Fork Baptist Church from 2-4 p.m.
Hanover College senior Amanda Althoff was presented with Honors in Art during Hanover’s Honors Day convocation held April 10th. She is the daughter of Carl and Sandy Althoff of near Fairview.

Loretta Kay Stanton and Craig Owen McKenzie of Russellville, Indiana, were married March 7th in a wedding ceremony at the First Pentecostal Church of God in Russellville. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Stanton of Russellville. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell McKenzie of Brownsburg, Indiana. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight McKenzie of Vevay.
The engagement and approaching marriage of Georgia Hazel Lewis and John Kenneth Meyer are being announced. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. George Morris, Jr., of Bennington. He is the son of John A. Meyer of North Vernon. The wedding will take place Saturday May 2nd, at the Madison Pentecostal Church.

Mode Martin and Florence Chapman were honored as Outstanding Volunteers for 1986 at the Fifth Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner of the Area 12 Council on Aging. Mr. Martin is a volunteer at the Vevay meal site and Mr.s Chapman is a volunteer at the Patriot meal site.
Thomas Bailey, son of Laverne Bailey of route 2, Vevay, has been promoted in the United States Air Force to the rank of senior airman. He is a munitions systems specialist at Carswell Air Force Base, Texas, with the 7th Munitions Maintenance Squadron.

There is the chance that the Coast Guard inspection scheduled now for next week (after being delayed for this week) will show that much less than $12,000 is needed to repair the Martha A. Graham Ferryboat. The owners think it can be repaired for $4,000. If so, they’ll repair it and keep it running. But if the bill’s going to be $12,000, chances are the ferryboat’s 170-year history could end before the end of May.
Officials of Kentucky Utilities have announced that two more units will be added to the Ghent power plant. The second smokestack should be in operations by the Fall of 1981, they said. Cost of the two new units: $438 million.
A year ago, Switzerland County’s first Bike-A-Thon to aid the mentally retarded was a smashing success. Saturday, the second Bike-A-Thon was even better. With 111 bicycles pedaling as many as 41 miles each, the Switzerland County “Ride-A-Bike for the Retarded” event netted more than $2,500 in money pledged as donations to the Jefferson-Switzerland Association for Retarded Cititzens.

Switzerland County Building Corporation’s board of directors has approved completed blueprints for a new Switzerland County High School and school officials are awaiting plan approval by seven state agencies before continuing work toward construction.
Switzerland County was as confused as the rest of the Midwest this week in trying to decide what time it was, but County Commissioners reeled Monday that the count remain on standard time.
Construction of a natural gas transmission line and distribution system in Vevay began Monday, according to Fred Varble, manager of Vevay Silgas.
Marine Corporal Paul Hizer, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Hizer of rural route 2, Vevay, was promoted to his present rank while serving at the Marine barracks, naval Air Station, Barber’s Point, Hawaii.
Local civic leaders are taking an optimistic view this week of prospects toward construction in the not too distant future of a highway bridge over the Ohio River at Markland Dam. A delegation of some 35 state officials and civic leaders from Indiana and Kentucky gathered in Vevay last Thursday to study the project with members of Indiana State Toll Bridge Commission.
Nelson R. Stevens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Stevens of rural route 2, Rising Sun, was recently promoted to the rank of Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force.

Henry Race, pastor of the Grant’s Creek Baptist Church in Posey Township was ordained as a minister Sunday afternoon in impressive services which were solemnized at the church there before a large congregation.
The 65th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Griswold was quietly observed Wednesday at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Ida Buchanan in Vevay.
Vevay friends of Austin T. Funk, principal of Osgood High School are pleased to learn that he has been granted a national Science Foundation scholarship for study at the University of Maryland from June 24th to August 2nd. He was one of 40 science and mathematics teachers to receive the scholarships. Mr. Funk served as superintendent of Vevay schools from 1999 to 1946.
John Brown of Shelbyville, son of Mrs. Marie Brown of Vevay, has enlisted in the Air Force Reserve for a period of six months. On Monday he left for Lackland Air Base at San Antonio, Texas to take a 30-day basic training.

James B. Tilley and Albert Leep of Vevay, students at Indiana University, have been appointed noncommissioned officers of R.O.T.C. according to an announcement by Colonel J. E. Graham, head of the Department of Military Science and Tactics.
Clyde Protsman and Julia LeClerc Knox attended the Spring Festival of the “Poetry Corner”, Inc., at the Athenaeum in Indianapolis, Saturday afternoon, where the prize winners chosen at the March 15th meeting received recognition.
Howard W. Sample, one of the best known merchants of Switzerland County, passed away at his home in Bennington early Saturday morning following an illness of several weeks.
Francis Graves, World War veteran and son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Graves, was found dead late Wednesday night on State Road 56 near the Jack Aldred farm.
Mrs. Thelma Ogle received a telegram Tuesday morning announcing the birth of a son to her nephew, Dr. Charles D. Benedict and Mrs. Benedict at a Battle Creek, Michigan hospital early that day.
One of the oldest business building lots in Vevay changed hands last week when Miss Annette Danglade sold to Hubert and Martha Hambrick her select lot on Ferry Street between the Buschmann Ice Cream Bar and the Louis Rosenberger pool room.
Miss Carolyn Pohlkotte of the Patriot High School senior class, has been awarded a Purdue scholarship in Home Economics and will enter the University in September.
The marriage of Miss Eleanor Buchanan and Robert L. LeClerc was quietly solemnized at the home of the officiating minister, the Reverend L.S. Courtney, Monday morning, April 28th.
Mrs. Kate Niehause, wife of County Councilman Henry Niehause of Grants Creek, Posey Township, died at her home there Tuesday as the result of sudden heart attack.

Bobby Mac Hartman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayland Hartman of Bennington, was struck by an automobile Friday afternoon when the child is said to have stepped from behind an automobile.
Walter Armstrong, member of a pioneer Switzerland County family, passed away in Los Angeles, California, April 25th.
Miss Mary Mendell died at her home near Allensville last Wednesday morning, death being due to the infirmities of old age. Miss Mendell who was 82 years old was daughter of Charles and Margaret Dorrell Mendell, being the last member of her family.

D. Otto Hitner’s Cotton Blossom Show Boat will arrive in Vevay soon for one performance of “The Little Shephard of Kingdom Come,” a dramatization of John Fox, Jr.’s thrilling novel of the Kentucky mountains.
Roy McKay of rural route 4, Vevay, was seriously injured last week when he was knocked down by an automobile driven by Forrest Brown of Vevay.
Albert J. Beveridge, former United States Senator, author, and historian, died suddenly at his home in Indianapolis Wednesday morning, April 27th.
The residence occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Austin Lock on the John Rose farm near Bennington was destroyed by fire last Saturday afternoon.

Frank B. Lamson of rural route 4, Vevay, was elected Truant Officer of Switzerland County Tuesday, succeeding W. H. Lyons who has served for several years.
The Hardwood property on lower Main Street was sold last week by the A. B. Shaw Agency to Miss Katherine Clements.
Mr. and Mrs. George Krummel and Edward Simpson attended the funeral of Lyman Searcy, an uncle of Mrs. Krummel, at Ghent Monday.
Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Lydia Buxton of Cincinnati. Mrs. Buxton was the mother of Miss Ethel Buxton, the trained nurse who was here several weeks last summer in attendance of Fred L. Haskell during the time he was so seriously ill.

William Weaver, aged 72 years, committed suicide by drowning in a pond near his home in Braytown last Monday night.

H. S. Ricketts is erecting a fine house on his farm on Tapps Ridge.
Jesse Teats, who is making the season with Hagenback-Wallace shows, has been promoted to second clarinetist.
Charles Sieglitz, the Ferry Street jeweler, has awarded to Scott Brothers of Ghent, the contract for the remodeling of his building.

Stephen R. Tinker of Fairview and Rachel Gardner of Vernon County, Missouri, were married May 3rd in the Methodist parsonage in Fairview.
The Florence telegraph operator, Phil Graves, took his departure for Michigan last Sunday where he will assume the duties of hotel clerk.
Dr. J. P. Butz, a physician and surgeon of many years experience, and R. J. H. Shadday, a promising young physician, have formed a partnership for the practice of their profession. They will occupy the office of Dr. Butz.
