Switzerland County High School senior Aaron Burnell, 19 was fatally injured Friday night as a result of a one vehicle accident on Bethel Ridge.
A house fire at approximately 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning claimed the life of 20- year old Kenneth Lee “Sweeny” Russell, Jr.
Courtney Marie Higgins was born February 14, 2006. She is the daughter of Crystal and Chad Higgins and joins big sister Hailey at home.
Vevay Newspaper editor and general manager Pat Lanman was in Washington, D.C. last week as part of the National Newspaper Association’s Government Conference.

Wilma McClellan, Harry Lamson, and Lois Rosenberger – lifelong, well-known and highly esteemed Switzerland Countians – are being honored for their many contributions to the community. They will be among several of the older citizens of southeastern Indiana who will be recognized for their achievements by the Area 12 Council on Aging at an upcoming awards ceremony. Wilma McClellan and Harry Lamson have been nominated for “Older Hoosier of the Year” award, while Lois Rosenberger has been nominated as the “Senior Volunteer of the Year.” The winners of both awards will be announced at a tea on April 1st in Aurora.
Tehya Allen, a junior at Switzerland County High School, earned a superior rating in the recent Indiana State School Music Association solo and ensemble vocal competition in Indianapolis.
Charles and Norma L. Campbell of Madison, formerly of Switzerland County, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, March 23rd.

Carol Ann Otter, representing the county’s volunteer emergency service units, updated the County Commissioners at their meeting on Monday, March 4th, on the progress that has been made on the Master Street Address Guide that is being created to help the county hook into the 911 emergency telephone system.

Five students from the Switzerland County High School band participated in the St. Patrick’s Day parade this past Sunday in Cincinnati. Those who participated are Greg Sloan, Michelle Green, Carol Tilley, Julie Johns and Joy Cutter.
“Color My World.” Am exhibition of recent work by artist Ann Farnsley of Vevay, features her “Munchies Coloring Book” and opened at the Portland Museum’s Albert B. Cornstock Gallery in Louisville on Wednesday, March 12th.

A new bridge on State Road 129 over Indian Creek is being planned by the Indiana State Highway Commission. One new bridge is currently under construction on 129, that one over Long Run, about four miles northwest of Vevay. The new one planned would replace an existing bridge on 129 about a mile nearer Vevay than the one being built now.
Terry Peters of Vevay was the first place winner in local speech competition sponsored jointly by Farm Bureau and the Switzerland Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors.
The local Vevay American Legion basketball team advanced to the final game in the ninth District tournament last Sunday by defeating Brookville, 69-66. This Sunday Vevay will be in the final game against Brookville. Vevay in undefeated, thus will have to be beaten twice.
Three young Switzerland athletes are on college teams this Spring. Playing for Kentucky Wesleyan baseball team are Joe Seaver and Bobby Osborne both of Vevay, and playing on the golf team at Indiana Tech is Mike Archer, of Pleasant.

Vevay’s new Dairy Queen opened for business last week on State Road 156, just east of the town. Owners Robert and Nannette (Nan) Hatton plan special grand opening activities in the near future.
Reported wounded in Vietnam combat last week was Dennis (Denny) Brown, former Vevay High School basketball star and son of James R. (Bob) and Margaret Lee Brown of Vevay. A private first class in the United States Marine Corps, Brown sustained gun shot wounds in the left shoulder and left leg with a fracture, his family was notified last Wednesday.
James L. Harris of Patriot has been elected Grand Chancellor of Indiana for the Knights of Pythias, with his term to begin July 1st. A member of Purity Lodge in Patriot, Harris was elected at t he annual K of P convention in Indianapolis March 25th and 26th.
Raymond Osborn, Sr., Switzerland County and Vevay businessman for the past 35 years, has been appointed a field auditor for the Indiana Department of Revenue.

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey E. Cole, nee Miss Nellie Newkirk, observed their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, March 25th, at their home near Fairview, Indiana.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bovard of Red Hog Pike are the parents of a baby girl, born March 19th. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces and has been give the name of Direnda Colleen. Mr. and Mrs. Bovard are also the parents of Stephen Lee.

Miss Norma Lee Ricketts and Charles Campbell were married Saturday, March 23rd, at the home of the officiating minister, Reverend Frank Reed.
Fire completely destroyed the home of William Dowdy and family near Allensville last Thursday.
Louise Earl Scott, formerly of Vevay, now of Cincinnati and Miss Jean Cheshire of Ladoga, Indiana, were married Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati.
Born, a son, Gayle Lee, to Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Wheeler of Patriot.
Born, March 26th, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Leap.

Adolphus Leep, retired farmer residing in Vevay was badly burned Wednesday afternoon when his trouser leg caught fire while he was burning weeds in the garden. Mr. Leep is 72 years of age and has been in poor health for some time.
The Ohio River came on a stand along the valley in this locality Wednesday evening the official gauge at Dam 39 registering 51.5.
Dr. D. D. Vanosdol, who was born at Allensville, 68 years ago died at his home in Rushville, Indiana Tuesday, death being caused by a stroke of paralysis which he suffered Saturday.
Miss Beatrice Gullion of near Moorefield and Otho Flinn of Cincinnati were married in Vevay Monday March 23rd, by Reverend Leland S. Courtney.
At a special meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, held here Saturday Edward I. Rosenberger was appointed Justice of the Peace to fill the vacancy created by the death of his father, Frank Rosenberger, Sr.
Among the choicest bits of flotsam picked up in the river by local boatmen so far have been a full barrel of expensive baking varnish towed to shore by James Sides and Don Stepleton and an upright piano brought in by Phil Fancher. The varnish had been untouched by the water but the piano at least the tone is questionable.
A bell has been erected in Moorefield in-case of fire. This bell was used for many years in the old school house which was destroyed by fire in 1934.

City officials of Vevay do not take seriously the action of Mrs. Minnie B. Dufour Tepe of Sacramento, California, who last week laid claim to Market Square in Vevay. The properties mentioned have been in possession of Vevay for 100 years or more and if after a court battle Mrs. Tepe was successful in claiming the ground delinquent taxes would amount to between $40,000 and $50,000. This amount is more than the property is worth.
Miss Eva Scudder of Fairview and Mr. Leo B. Morris of Clay City, Indiana were married last week in Madison.
Both Vevay motion picture shows were ordered closed and several buildings torn down last week by the state fire marshal. Both theaters will be discontinued.
The new tow boat, City of Pittsburgh of the Carnegie Street Company passed down last Friday on her maiden voyage with a large tow of steel products for the south.
The new Lamb-Carrollton ferry boat “Ohio” will arrive this week.

Contract for building the O’Neal and McKay garage in Vevay has been let to Henderson Webster of this city.
W. G. Klein Jr. has recently taken the agency for the Chalmers automobile and his demonstrator will arrive in Vevay about April 1st.
Born, March 23rd, a daughter, Dorothy Elizabeth to Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Brown.
W. W. Fry of Vevay has completed all arrangements for establishment of a new coal and lumber yard in Vevay.
Curtis Lawton has completed his studies in an Indianapolis veterinary college and arrived in Vevay Sunday where he will probably open a veterinary office.
Miss Hazel Moore of Manville and Davis McFarland of Craig Township were married March 15th at the home of Reverend F. P. Smith by Reverend Turner.
Born Saturday a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Emory Scranton of Humphrey’s Corner.
Born March 20th, a son to Professor Geigenheimer and wife of Moorefield.
A daughter was born last Thursday to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Curry of Craig Township. She has been named Katherine.

Joseph Cole, 72, Civil War veteran, died this week at his home near Bennington.
Thomas Thompson, familiarly known as “Tinker Tommy” celebrated his 96th birthday Monday at his home near Bennington. He is the county’s oldest man.
Miss Nellie Newkirk and Harvey Cole of Bennington were married Sunday by Reverend C. W. Lee at his home near Sugar Branch.
Twin sons were born March 19th to Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Oren of St. Mary’s.
Kate Gurley of Patriot suffered a broken collarbone one day last week when she fell on the ice.

Charles F. Riley of Vevay was married March 12th in Carrollton to Miss Lula B. Leep of that city.
The Eggleston Club entertained with a Dickens reception at the Opera House Wednesday night and it was a very elegant affair.
H. Dorrel of Bascom and Miss Mollie Conaway of Ohio County were married Thursday.
Fred Pattie had his hand badly cut while operating a saw in Pattie’s sawmill.

Last Sunday night a barn belonging to Dempsey Gullion in York Township was destroyed by fire and is supposed to be the act of an incendiary.
A house and store belonging to James McKee of Cross Plains burned to the ground on the afternoon of March 23rd.
The Democrats are talking about trotting out George W. Mendell of Vevay as their candidate for Prosecuting Attorney.
