‘Queen of Hearts’ to be crowned this Sunday at high school

The Switzerland County FFA chapter will cap off its celebration of National FFA Week this Sunday afternoon with the crowning of this year’s “Queen of Hearts”.

The pageant will be held in the Switzerland County High School cafeteria, and will begin at 4 p.m. Admission to this year’s pageant is $3 per person, and proceeds will benefit the Quercus Grove Food Pantry, which was the platform organization for 2009 Queen of Hearts Rachel Gurley.

This year, there are 11 contestants for the crown, and each will be presenting a special charitable organization or cause as their platform. The Switzerland County FFA chapter will then take on the winner’s platform for a community service project during the coming year.

The public is invited to attend.

Here’s a look at this year’s candidates:

– ANDREA BROGAN: Andrea is a junior at Switzerland County High School, and is being sponsored in the pageant by Coyote Creek Farms. She is the daughter of James and Rita Brogan of Florence, and her platform is 410 Bridge.

She is active in FFA, Pep Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, SADD, track, and is a varsity cheerleader.

She was the first runnerup in the 2009 Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant; and has earned Grand Champion honors at the 4-H Fair. She is active in her church, and also helps with activities in York Township.

– COURTNEY CARFIELD: Courtney Carfield is the daughter of Joe and Michelle Carfield of Vevay, and she is a freshman at Switzerland County High School. She is sponsored by Vevay Newspapers, Inc., and her platform is the Switzerland County Animal Shelter.

She is a member of the high school softball team, is a junior varsity cheerleader, and is a member of the French Club and the Pep Club. She is also active with her church youth group.

– BROOKE DICKERSON: Brooke Dickerson is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by RS Homes, and she is the daughter of Mark Dickerson and Bridgette Miller. She is a freshman as Switzerland County High School, and her platform is working to raise awareness about active and wounded soldiers in Veterans Hospitals.

She is a member of the volleyball, softball, swimming, and track teams; and is also a junior varsity cheerleader. She is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FFA, Pep Club, student council, and the French Club. She was also a candidate in the 2009 Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant. She is active in the Rising Sun Church of Christ youth group.

– CHELSEA DUVALL: Chelsea Duvall has the Switzerland County Animal Shelter as her platform in this year’s pageant, and she is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School. She is the daughter of Shonda and Tony Rose, and Tim and Toni Young; and is being sponsored by Jeremy Armstrong of Louis Dreyfus Commodities.

She is the reporter of the FFA chapter; secretary of the Key Club; and is involved in student council and the National Junior Honor Society. She is involved in 4-H, was a contestant in the 2009 Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant; and was the 2009 first runner up of the Queen of Hearts pageant. She was the Star Greenhand of the FFA chapter in 2009, and has earned Grand Champion and Showmanship honors in 4-H.

– PAIGE FREEMAN: Paige Freeman is the daughter of Lisa and Dobbie Ridener of near Vevay. Her platform in this year’s pageant is Foster Children in Switzerland County; and she is being sponsored by the Switzerland County YMCA. She is a freshman at Switzerland County High School.

She is a member of the cross country and track teams, and is a varsity cheerleader. She is a member of SADD, and the National Junior Honor Society. She was All Conference and All Sectional in cross country, and is active in 4-H and the Olive Branch Baptist Church youth group.

- KAITLYN HALL: Katie Hall is the daughter of Shauna Wiley and Bruce Hall, and is a senior at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored by the Switzerland County Animal Shelter; and her platform is the Switzerland County Animal Shelter.

She is a member of the varsity volleyball team; is the manager of the varsity boys basketball team; and is active in Pep Club, FFA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, French Club, and SADD. She is also very active in 4-H, and her church youth group. She has been named Miss Congeniality of the Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant and the Miss Switzerland County pageant; and was the first runner up in the 2010 Homecoming Queen contest.

- ERIN RENYER: Erin Renyer is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Aurora Casket Company, and she is the daughter of Pat and Paul Renyer. Her platform for the pageant is Special Olympics.

She is active in FFA, where she has participated in the Homeless Project and the Mother’s Day Project; and has volunteered at the Lions Club booth and the Grape Stomp area at the Swiss Wine Festival. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and participates on the crops judging team for FFA.

- ALLEISHA REYNOLDS: Alleisha Reynolds is the daughter of Gary and Tina Reynolds; and is being sponsored in the pageant by Bob’s Tack Shop. Her platform for the pageant is the FFA Homeless Project, and she is a senior at Switzerland County High School.

She has been a member of the cheerleading squad and is a manager for the track team; and is also active in FFA, Pep Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Business Professionals of America. She has helped with the Homeless Project, Special Olympics, and Relay for Life. She is also active in the 4-H program. She works for Switzerland County Tourism.

– SHAYLA SMITH: Shayla Smith is the daughter of Betty and Steve Gifford, and she is a senior at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored by Gifford Farms, and her platform for the pageant is Special Olympics.

She currently is the President of the student council; is Secretary of the senior class; and is editor of the yearbook. She is a varsity cheerleader, and is active in FFA, Business Professionals of America, and Pep Club. She is on the varsity volleyball team, and is the reigning Edelweiss Princess of the Swiss Wine Festival. She was the first runner up in the 2009 Miss Switzerland County pageant. She also earned the “Star Volunteer” award from the Swiss Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

- ANGELA SWANSON: Angela Swanson is a senior at Switzerland County High School, and she is being sponsored in the pageant by Edelweiss Floral. She is the daughter of Dana and Belinda Swanson; and her platform for the pageant is the Quercus Grove Food Pantry.

She participates in volleyball, FFA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Pep Club, and is Vice President of the senior class. She volunteers at the Quercus Grove Food Pantry, is active in her church youth group, and represented her fellow seniors as their Queen candidate at the 2009 Versailles Pumpkin Show. She earned the Courage Award in volleyball this year.

– LINDSEY TURNER: Lindsey Turner is the daughter of Nancy Kidwell and John Turner, and she is being sponsored by the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department. Her platform for the pageant is the Switzerland County Animal Shelter.

She is active in the French Club, and she is a member of the cheerleading squad. She has been a dance teacher for three years; is involved in her youth group; and also provides entertainment at the nursing home. She has earned gold medals at the ISSMA Vocal Competition.
