‘Queen of Hearts’ pageant is March 1st at Switzerland County High School

EDITOR’S NOTE: After this week’s edition went to press; the winter storm hitting Switzerland County has impacted this year’s “Queen of Hearts” pageant.

This year’s pageant has now been moved to Sunday, March 1st. It will be held in the cafeteria at Switzerland County High School, and will begin at 2 p.m.

The Switzerland County High School FFA chapter will hold its annual “Queen of Hearts” pageant this Sunday. February 22nd. The event will be held in the cafeteria at the high school, and will begin at 2 p.m., and there is a $3 admission charge.

Unlike other pageants held during the year, the Queen of Hearts pageant also asks each candidate to select a platform involving some social or community issue. The Switzerland County FFA chapter then adopts the platform of the winning contestant and raises money for that cause during the coming year.

This year there are 13 girls vying for the title of Queen of Hearts:

– MACY BARWICK is the daughter of Bryan and Carrie Barwick. She is a senior at Switzerland County High School, and her platform for this year’s pageant is Autism Awareness (Hippotherapy). Her sponsor in the pageant is Weaver Farms.

She is Vice President of the Senior Class; was second runner up in the Homecoming court; is a member of the band, student council, National Honor Society, Drama Club, BPA, and Key Club. She was a delegate to Hoosier Girls State.

– MACKENZIE COVINGTON is being sponsored in the pageant by Covington’s Towing and Recovery; and she is the daughter of Joe Covington. Her platform for the Queen of Hearts pageant is the American Cancer Society.

She is a member of BPA, student council, and the track and soccer teams. She volunteers at the Switzerland County Animal Shelter; and has worked gates at the Swiss Wine Festival.. She earned the ‘Outstanding Player’ award for soccer.

- SUMMER DICKERSON is the daughter of Mark Dickerson and Bridgette Miller; and she is being sponsored in the pageant by Cocoa Tan. Her platform in this year’s pageant is the Wounded Warrior Project.

She is active in BPA, where she serves as secretary; the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; student council; Pep Club, and Spanish Club. She is a member of the Pleasant Outlaws 4-H Club; and is a member of the Switzerland Baptist Church Youth Group.

- MCKENNA EDWARDS is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by RS Home Sales, and her platform for the competition is the Ronald McDonald House. She is the daughter of Michael and Marla Edwards.

She is a member of the National Honor Society; BPA; Pep Club; the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; student council; and Olive Branch Baptist Church youth group. She is a cheerleader and a member of the softball team; and was the 2103 Edelweiss Teen Princess.

– JACQUELINE HENSLEY is the daughter of Bobby and Monica Hensley, and she is being sponsored in the pageant by Detraz Services. Her platform for the competition is ‘Your Vote, Your Voice’.

She is a member of the varsity volleyball and swim teams; and is a member of National Honor Society; BPA; Spanish Club; Pep Club; and Junior Historical Society. She is on the Student Leadership Advisory Council; and ranks third academically in her class.

– ADELI KINNE is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Switzerland County Farm Bureau, Inc. She is the daughter of Steve and Judy Kinne; and her platform for the contest is HOPPS, Inc. (Helping Our Pediatric Patients Smile).

She is active in FFA, where she serves as chapter President and District Vice President; and is a member of the cross country, track, archery, and cheerleading teams. She is a member of National Honor Society; Student Leadership Advisory Council; the Drama Club; and the Prom Committee.

- AUDREY KINNE is the daughter of Steve and Judy Kinne, and her platform for this year’s pageant is the Dangers of Texting and Driving. She is being sponsored in the pageant by Nathan and Donna Hughes from the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department.

She is a member of the cross country, track, and archery teams; is a member of the National Honor Society; Key Club; Drama Club; Outdoors Club; BPA; and FFA, where she has participated in the Indiana State FFA SOAR and Summer Challenge Camps and has participated in many other FFA activities.

– LAUREN ROSE is the daughter of Shonda and Tony Rose. She is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Jeremy Armstrong/Smith Implements. Her platform in this year’s pageant is Switzerland County Animal Shelter.

She is a member of the BPA, FFA, and the high school choir. She is a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church where she is a part of the youth group; and she is active in the Switzerland County 4-H program. She has also participated in many FFA community projects.

- MAGGIE MOORE is being sponsored by Granny’s Restaurant; and her platform for this year’s Queen of Hearts pageant is Diabetes Awareness. She is the daughter of Tonya Moore.

At Switzerland County High School Maggie is a member of the Pep Club; the Drama Club; and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD); and she also works a full-time job at Granny’s Restaurant while in high school.

- KATLYNN PAPUCCI is the daughter of Dan and Kelly Papucci, and her platform for this year’s pageant are Drug Awareness programs. She is being sponsored in the Queen of Hearts pageant by DK Racing.

At Switzerland County High School, Katlynn is a member of the track team; as well as the Switzerland County High School Marching Band and the Flag Corps. She is also active in the organization, “NKU Hates Heroin” at Northern Kentucky University.

– KASSIDY PHELPS is the daughter of Randy Phelps, and she is being sponsored by Brenda Moore Mayflower. Her platform for the 2015 Queen of Hearts pageant is violence awareness.

While in high school, Kassidy has been a member of the Switzerland County High School track team; and her community activities include being involved in putting on a 5K walk/run for awareness on the dangers of heroin.

- CAMERON RAY is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Katina Ray, Independent Consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics. She is the daughter of Eric and Katina Ray, and her platform in the pageant is the Switzerland County Animal Shelter.

She is a member of the cross country team, where she was a regional and semistate qualifier in 2014; and also the track, and archery teams; and is also active in FFA, where she is a member of the officer team. She is a member of the Switzerland County 4-H program; National Junior Honor Society; and has volunteered for various community projects.

- HOPE TANKERSLEY is the daughter of Donald and Tammy Tankersley and is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Turtle Creek Harbor. Her platform for the Queen of Hearts pageant is the Switzerland County After Prom.

She is a member of the volleyball, basketball, softball, and golf teams; and is also active in BPA; student council; Pep Club; and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is involved in bell ringing for the Salvation Army; is active in her youth group at church; and also helps in the nursery at church.
