Patty Chase wasn’t able to make the Red HOT Hatters luncheon last Monday at the Moasis restaurant in Vevay and she missed a good one! The food was excellent and the service fantastic! We even had a first timer Mary Cole, a friend of Laura Riga. Joining Marie and Laura were: Claudia Dawson, Melodee Stepleton, Stasia Wiseman, Charlene Goff, Diana Barry, Sandy Dawson, Carla Burt, Dottie Keeton, Joyce Johnson and me. Joyce is progressing very well following her knee surgery and has graduated to a cane already.

This is the first year for the Red HOT Hatters to actually become actively involved with our community and we are by supporting the Switzerland County Shelter Shuffle on Saturday, June 4th with a Silver Sponsorship and participating as a team in this year’s Switzerland County Relay for Life. Our Team Captain for the Relay for Life Sandy Dawson suggested that we come up with a fundraiser for the day of the Relay and advised that it will run from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 25th.

The Red HOT Hatters are also collecting items for the County Wide Sale to be held on Saturday, June 11th. This year we intend to set up around the Courthouse and as always, all monies will go to the Antoinette “Toni” Kniola Memorial Fund. Anyone wishing to make a donation to Toni’s Fund may do so at anytime by stopping by the Community Foundation Office or to contribute items for the sale contact me at (812) 594-2281. Frank Cochran, 58, passed from cancer at home with family on Monday, April 18th. There will be a benefit for Frank Cochran and his family on Saturday, May 21st beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Posey Township Firehouse. There will be food available for a freewill donation as well as a silent auction. All proceeds from the benefit will go to help defray medical bills and other family expenses. Betty Barron, age 66 of Patriot, passed away in her home on Sunday, April 17th. The funeral for Marvin Powers, age 70 also of Patriot was Monday, April 18th. He also passed away at home on April 14th. Our thoughts and prayers of comfort extend to all three families.

The rest of my Monday was spent mailing in checks to the IRS and the Indiana Department of Revenue and visiting with Carolyn Miller at the Courthouse. Trust me! Visiting with Carolyn was a lot more fun and definitely not as expensive. Carolyn is with the Switzerland County Cemetery Commission, and our little cemetery in Patriot needs a new sign. She was kind enough to research the cemetery which as of January 4th, 1875 became the property of Patriot Lodge No. 9 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In addition, she provided me with information on how to obtain a very attractive sign at a reasonable price from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. So, it was kind of like seeing my tax money that I paid to the State of Indiana coming back to Patriot for a good cause. Not much consolation but some anyway.

Wayne Dawson celebrated his 68th Birthday on Friday, April 22nd. Wayne is married to my very special friend Sandy and they currently live in Vevay. A Very Happy Birthday, Wayne!

“Cook’s Kitchen” will be opening next Sunday, May 1st in Patriot in the former location of Bryceno’s restaurant. Finally the church folk will have somewhere to congregate after church again.

The May Meeting of the Patriot Town Board has been moved from the normal first Monday to Tuesday, May 10 at 6 p.m.

Speak of the devil! I got a call from my friend Sharon Levell, aka Patriot’s Aunt Bea, and starting next week, she is going to share some of her recipes with me like she did before! The best part is that we’re going to take the time to visit and have lunch, too. So until next week, I have a quickie recipe of my own that I wanted to share:



3 cucumbers

3 tomatoes

1 onion

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon of cracked pepper

2 tablespoons of sugar (OPTIONAL)

2 teaspoons of salt

1 cup of water

1/4 cup of olive oil

How to make it: cut up the veggies, mix it all up and chill for 1-2 hours. That’s it!
