Sympathy to the family of Charles Wolf, formerly of Patriot who was killed in an accident on September 30th on Highway 36 near Carrollton, Kentucky.

Fall Break is this week for the Switzerland County Schools. Hope everyone has a fun and safe break!

If you get an opportunity, drive down Columbia Street in Patriot by the old school lot. The beautiful Sycamore tree still stands in its splendor in front of the lots where the school once stood. It would be interesting to know how old that tree is. My mother said it was a big tree when she started school there in 1940. Oh the stories that tree could tell!

Did you know that there was once a funeral home in Patriot? Yes! It was owned by Walter Humphrey and his sister Anna Humphrey Norwood. The funeral home was located in the house on Third Street (250) where Miss Edna Ascherman and later Frank and Sara Forthman lived. The Chase family lives there now. The Humphrey Funeral Home in Patriot opened in the late 1890’s, and closed in the mid 1940’s. The Humphreys moved the funeral home to Rising Sun, where it would later become Humphrey-McClure, then Humphrey-Taylor, and later Humphrey-Detmer-Taylor. The Humphrey Funeral Home in Patriot served many families in Patriot and Posey Township. It was very common in the 1800’s and early 1900’s for families to have visitation in their homes, and funerals would be held in church or the funeral home.

Congratulations to Switzerland County Middle School eighth grader Ellie Keith on winning the ORVC Cross Country Meet! This was her second year to be champion of the ORVC! Ellie is the granddaughter of Channie Smith, Patriot High School Graduate 1968.

The Town of Patriot will have Trick or Treat on Monday, October 31st, from 6-8 p.m. There will be costume judging prior to Trick or Treating in the parking lot by the four-way stop in town.

I fondly remember going to Floyd and Jean Rose’s on Halloween to get Jean’s famous popcorn balls! Jean would usually be in the yard dressed in costume!

Congratulations to the Switzerland County High School boys and girls soccer teams on finishing the season undefeated and both winning sectional championships on Saturday!

Congratulations to Posey Township residents Gracie White and Amber Detmer on advancing to the cross-country Regional! Claire Rogers also advances, as does the boys cross country team.

It was so good to see Betty Clifton Lucas this week in Vevay. Betty has been a longtime advocate for the citizens of Switzerland County. She worked in county government for over 50 years, in the Auditor’s Office as well as serving as Administrator of the Health Department for many years. Betty still oversees senior housing in Vevay at Switzer Square. Betty is a 1948 Graduate of Patriot High School.

Donna Walcott Faber reported that her granddaughter Malea tried out recently for the Munciana Indy Volleyball Club, and out of a nine team placing, she made team one! This was her first year to try out. Malea will compete nationally in tournaments with finals at Disney World in June! Malea is the daughter of Bethany Robinson Bair and the granddaughter of Donna and Jeff Faber and Ed Robinson. She is the great-granddaughter of Norman and Ruth Robinson and Raymond and Irene Walcott.
