The Patriot/Posey Park Board has been working for the past few months to apply for grants to secure funds which would allow it to update and beautify Harris Park. All the hard work has paid off as they can now announce that they have been granted funds from the Switzerland County Community Foundation as well as the Switzerland County Tourism Group to move forward with the three year plan to renovate the park. Thank You to both groups for all your help and advice!

The Patriot/Posey Park Board will hold a meeting on June 24th at 6 p.m. at the Patriot Town Hall to discuss the Fourth of July events. Volunteers are still needed! Anyone who would like to volunteer is encouraged to join them! For any questions or concerns please contact me at, (812) 801-9762 or on the Patriot/Posey Park Board Page.

The Memorial Day program at the Switzerland County Courthouse was a class act! I was so impressed by the entire program and especially of the participation of so many people in our community, both young and old. I think the children leading — and even signing — the ‘Pledge of Allegiance’ might have been the highlight of my day though. Lots of folks attended but it was Patty Chase and her cohort Glenda Sullivan who managed to get the prime parking spot, of course.

In the very short time that I have been affiliated with the Vevay Music Club, I have enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie. We are all very disappointed in the cancellation of this week’s concert. Unfortunately, sometimes even the best made plans are disrupted by everyday complications. The hope is that the concert will be re-scheduled for the fall. Meanwhile, we are asking prayers for our beloved Barbara DeNoon who is a patient at KDH following surgery.

I’ve been out and about more than usual recently, and it was great running into Barbara Dowdy at the IGA the other day! She is looking good after her surgery. Likewise, seeing Sharon Schmitt and Mary Christiani at church was a morale booster. I know all of these ladies are working hard on health issues and I applaud them for their determination!

Thank you, Teresa Bandy, for your words of encouragement! We accidentally met over the fence and in the alley between my neighbor’s house and mine this past week. It’s been a while since I first made her acquaintance and ironically that involved Ray McFadden and the day we met, it was his birthday that day. It was so nice to talk to someone who enjoys my incessant blubbering and it really cheered me up! I’m even putting the cat mailbox back up by the front steps of my house because of her! The poor cat mailbox does not fare well during storms and so I took it down this past winter, but my friend Travis Miller will be installing handrails for me soon and I should be able to permanently attach the mailbox then.

The Switzerland County Animal Shelter has asked the Red HOT Hatters for contributions to its Bake Sale, which is being held as part of its 3rd Annual Pet Adoption/Silent Auction Fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, June 15th from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Switzerland County 4-H Fairgrounds, 507 Vineyard in Vevay. Baked goods can be left at the Shelter on Thursday or Friday during normal business hours or on the day of the event beginning at 9 a.m.

The Red HOT Hatters will endeavor to make it to the Key West Shrimp House in Madison on Friday, June 21st at 11 a.m. Depending on the highway construction at that time, carpooling is a very distinct possibility.

The Patriot 4th of July Parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 4th, with registration at the Patriot Boat Ramp beginning at 8:30 a.m. Forms may be picked up at Patriot Town Hall, 352 3rd Street in Patriot or from Park Board members. There will be a Float Contest and the categories include: Best in Show (overall best), Most Original, Classic Wheels (best motorcycle, tractor or car) and The Patriot (most patriotic float). Category winners will receive monetary prizes. Winners will be announced at the town picnic in the park.

Prayer List: Barbara DeNoon, Reverend Steve Ward, Lois Rosenberger, Sharon Schmitt, Bill Olds, Doris O’Bannon, Trayten Cannon, Emilee McKay, Abby Galbreath,  Sue Bear, Ellyn Kern — wife of Jerry Brown, Aletha and Owen Heaton, John Campbell, Sharon and Bill Levell, Irvin and Eva Fette, Jake Rader and Red HOT Hatters Barb Dowdy, Mary Christiani, Lura Riga and June Lack.

Critter Corner:  Xena, the Warrior Princess celebrated her 12th birthday Friday with a car ride to Vevay in her special puppy booster seat, Arby’s roast beef (sliced and diced, of course) and a scoop of ice cream with peanut butter. Xena is my tiniest Japanese Chin pooch: All of 5 pounds but with the attitude of a Rottweiler.
