Patriot News 01/30/2020

H.F. Emerson in January 29, 1931 (89 years ago this week) wrote a historical sketch of the town Patriot based partially on items appearing in The Vevay Reveille-Enterprise, as well as from facts told to the writer by ‘his grandfathers, father, William Rea, Major and Fanny White and others, who kindly aided.’

According to Emerson, “What now comprises the present town of Patriot, and the adjoining country, both north and south along the Ohio River, was first occupied by a lawless set of inhabitants drawn from Kentucky. These men, driven across the river by the terrors of the whipping post, which at that date was Kentucky’s method of defense against undesirables and law violators, cultivated small tracts of land but subsisted mainly by what they gathered from the woods and river, and were not constructive settlers of the virgin soil.”

This year marks 200 years since the town of Patriot (formerly Troy) was first laid out. Happy Birthday, Patriot!

The next Red HOT Hatters meeting will be on Friday, February 21st at the Thirsty Lemon in East Enterprise and will begin at 11 a.m. The Thirsty Lemon Diner is located just north of the 4-way flashing light on State Road 56. All are welcome to attend! No hats are required but the wearing of the colors red and/or purple is encouraged.

For the second year in a row, the Red HOT Hatters will be venturing to the Stream Cliff Farm, Restaurant and Winery on Friday, April 17th. Beginning with lunch at the Twigs & Sprigs Restaurant at 11 a.m., our day will be filled with fun, food, shopping, and beautiful scenery. Stream Cliff is located in Commiskey, Indiana. Drive time from Vevay is roughly an hour, so I anticipate a caravan forming in the lot of the YMCA and leaving no later than 10 a.m. An advanced headcount would be helpful again.   I’ve been spending too much time at home and eating way too much junk food, but this is delicious:

1 package – Ready to Bake,

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

20 oz. Can – Apple Pie Filling

6-10 Pieces of Caramel Candy

Line an 8 inch square pan with cooking parchment paper.

Press 9 cookies into the bottom of pan. (Corner to corner).

Top with the apple pie filling. Crumble remaining cookies over pie filling.

Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees, then cool for 30 minutes.

Microwave the caramels on high for 1 min. Drizzle caramel over the cooled bars.
