An outstanding cross country season by both the Switzerland County boys and girls varsity cross country teams was extended by at least one week on Saturday — as both teams advanced out of the Southwestern Sectional and will run this Saturday, October 26th, in the Shelbyville Regional.
Pacers are second
The Pacer boys team ran to a second place overall finish as a team, posting a team score of 114 to finish behind Sectional champion Madison, who had a score of 41.
There was some tension, however, as Austin also had a team score of 114. Team scores are calculated using the finishing positions of the top five runners (excluding runners who represent teams that don’t have enough runners to record a team score). In the event of a tie, the scorers then go to each team’s sixth runner — and Switzerland County’s Luke Sullivan finished ahead of Austin’s sixth runner, breaking the tie in favor of Switzerland County.
Crothersville was fourth with 122; followed by Milan with 124; South Ripley with 134; South Dearborn with 163; Charlestown with 182; Rising Sun with 228; New Washington with 238; Lawrenceburg with 239; and Southwestern with 281.
Individually for the Pacers, senior Cooper Hon led the way with a 15th overall finish in a time of 17:49.3. He was followed by Landon Gross in 22nd place with a time of 18:08.0; Cale Collier in 28th place in a time of 18:29.5; Ty Lay in 31st place in a time of 18:36.7; Michael Gross in 39th place with a time of 19:16.9; Luke Sullivan in the winning 46th spot with a time of 19:30.9; and Gavin Rich in 51st with a time of 20:11.6.
Lady Pacers advance
In the girls race, Switzerland County advanced by finishing fourth overall as a team. The Lady Pacers posted a score of 92, finishing behind Sectional champion Southwestern (52), runner up Charlestown (55), and third place South Dearborn (56).
Madison was fifth with 116; followed by Lawrenceburg (177), Rising Sun (188), Austin (193), South Ripley (230), New Washington (277), and Jac-Cen-Del (296).
Switzerland County was led by senior Amber Detmer, who ran the sixth fastest time for girls in school history, 20:40.8, to finish third overall — but earned second place points because individual race winner Lydia Ramsey of Henryville did not have enough teammates to record a team score in the meet.
Other Switzerland County runners included: Kaylyn Schaefer, 13th overall in a time of 21:46.5; Ellie Keith, 19th overall in a time of 22:40.5; Jazmyn Blevins, 27th overall in a time of 23:04.1; Ashlyn Covington, 40th overall in a time of 24:11.0; Carlee Boggs, 47th overall in a time of 24:47.2; and Isabella Breeck, 52nd overall
